  1. There has to be something other than a tourist bar at night. Where do the locals go?

Pick a casino close to your place. Stellaris at the MRT is okay, but pick ‘Em. Locals are all over.

  2. Hello all,

I'm staying in Miami the night before my cruise departs, and want to get a great meal the night before. So, I'd love to see recommendations of must-go-to restaurants in the Miami area that are not necessarily fancy, but have fantastic food and service. Being from Tampa, I'm talking about something of the caliber of Bern's Steakhouse, Armani's, Ruth's Chris, Charley's, Capital Grill, Council Oak, etc, etc.

Thanks in advance for the recommendations!

Always loved Joe’s Stone Crabs; it’s a busy place when stone crabs are available - be prepared to tip the Maitre d’ to get a table. Have the key lime pie after the stone crabs.

  3. hey guys, will be going to Hawaii next feb on 17 nights cruise on Eurodam, i went with royal carribbean to bahamas on a 4 days cruse and it was great, except the food was ok, entertainment was not bad. just wondering how it will be with HAL for people who went with Eurodam to hawaii before, i know HAL has larger older group of travelers compare to other cruise line. Just want to hear what you guys think of HAL, especially with Eurodam for the food and entertainment part. Thanks!

  4. or is it more for families. I am trying to book excursions for kids honeymoon.

Is there another private all inclusive type place for adults only? They are in aruba for 12 days.

    Thanks!

When we went, there was a part dedicated for adults and another for families with younger kids.

Verify that this is still true with the Hotel Concierge, or DePalm.

  5. ABC Islands are very safe.

In Aruba, take a bus/cab to Eagle Beach or (further) to Palm Beach, or the other direction to Baby Beach. Beaches are great, all public, and safe. Many restaurants and bars. You sound smart, don't get stupid, and you'll have a good time. Try a Balashi!

  6. I'll bet many people are (actually, it's two cruises). The place to find them, though, is not on this general Holland America board, but on the HAL Roll Call forum.

There should be two separate roll calls for the two different cruises. Join in on both of them! If you can't find a roll call thread started, then feel free to begin one.

Thank you, Ruth. Been a while since I joined a roll call; forgot how to find one. Bern busy cruising!

  7. Careful! Some Taxi drivers are a tad larcenous. One charged us $21 fare. Fare should be around $13 plus tip. He went on the highway unnecessarily, and took us for a ride -- literally and figuratively -- a lesson learned for about $10. I've spent more, and stayed stupid, though.

  8. Easy. Faro Blanco, although it is an Italian place, seafood is good, and it's a cab ride away out at the California Lighthouse but it is beautifully located and a perfect place to experience a gorgeous sunset around 6:00PM, depending on weather and time of year. For a great seafood restaurant nearby the port, short cab ride to Driftwood -- try the barracuda, if it's available. Reliably good. Closer is Fisherman's (something or another) near the bus terminal a block or three away from your ship. Good food, locals like it, reasonable. No view, unless you count passersby. Others are Windows on Aruba for the view, costly. Check ads for many others; visitors have a wealth of choices in Aruba for dining and ambiance.

  9. I also have limited mobility, but we took an island tour from the dock. The mini bus was parked close to the ship and I think the tour cost around 25USD.

After he tour we had a look around the town and if I remember correctly we took a taxi back to the ship.

Aruba is one of our least favourite of the Caribbean islands. It is dry and arid and the capital is a bit brash.

That's what makes horse racing popular. Folks in Aruba speak highly of Brits. Some of them are brash, eh?

  10. First time in Aruba and have no idea about layout or distance from ship to anything of interest (even simple souvenir shopping). Elderly with mobility issues, will use cane if not too far, or walker available if needed. So how much walking is involved just getting off the ship, and walking toward town or some shopping places? Might like to take the free trolley, but would have to leave the walker behind to do that. Any suggestions?

Shopping, food, slots, tables, souvenir vendors, all not too far from the Dock in Aruba, right in the heart of Oranjestad, the Capitol. Taxis are plentiful, and drivers will negotiate a fair fare for tourists for half/full day touring. Many older folks, and canes and walkers are not uncommon. Also, check with the trolley operator -- walker may not be a huge problem; it is for tourists.

Unlike other islands, we've found that the people of Aruba are honest and justifiably proud of its reputation and popularity as One Happy Island, especially to American tourists. We and many others continue to return year after year. We've been 20 times in 18 years. You'll enjoy it, and want to return.

    Bon Bini!

  11. We visit Chalet Suisse at least 1 time during our trips to Aruba. Great food and service. We have never been let down.

Last time at Chalet Suisse in Nov. 2016 was a letdown.

  12. You would need to be in the smoking section to see that. I've never seen it. those in the casino are playing :) DH accompanies me (doesn't smoke) and watches me and sometimes takes a turn. Money is still going in. I have the casino discount to prove it :D;)

Depending on the length of the cruise there can be several non smoking nights in the casino.

Jacqui, the NA is nieuw to me, but on some dam ships, Hold 'em players are quite near slots where players can (and do) smoke. Usually, smokers respect other non-smoking card players, and take a smoke break away from the table; not so with slot smokers. Hope the table and smoking slots are far apart.

Enjoy this, and everyone you're on!
