  1. I have just returned from a Norwegian Jade cruise which stopped in Alesund. We hired a car from Avis which is a short (10 min walk) from the dock. We were 2nd off the ship and picked up the car just after 8am. We drove to Trollstigen and Trollveggen stopping off at various waterfalls and viewpoints along the way. We did a circuit and were back in Alesund around 3pm. We drove up to the Aksla viewpoint and then returned the car to Avis before 4pm when the office closed. We then wandered around the town for about 1 hour until the heavy rain started and we returned to the ship.

Our route was essentially this - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Avis+bilutleie+%C3%85lesund,+Nedre+Strandgate+50,+6005+%C3%85lesund,+Norway/Trollstigen+Senter,+%C3%85ndalsnes,+Norway/Troll+Wall,+Rauma,+Norway/Aksla+Viewpoint,+%C3%85lesund,+Norway/Avis+bilutleie+%C3%85lesund,+Nedre+Strandgate,+%C3%85lesund,+Norway/@62.4461954,6.5364053,10z/data=!4m37!4m36!1m10!1m1!1s0x4616da3af8b094c3:0x3509e869ba66c98!2m2!1d6.1386038!2d62.470736!3m4!1m2!1d7.0986102!2d62.3409617!3s0x4616a0dfb071545d:0xc459b13e87eecddf!1m5!1m1!1s0x46140e73a9080343:0x58aeb47eee13f4fc!2m2!1d7.6632067!2d62.4535802!1m5!1m1!1s0x46140c3b9657f9cb:0xf7606439db4bc46a!2m2!1d7.7178023!2d62.485801!1m5!1m1!1s0x4616da43e06f7ce5:0xac4e477fec50ff3a!2m2!1d6.1640809!2d62.4742868!1m5!1m1!1s0x4616da3af8b094c3:0x3509e869ba66c98!2m2!1d6.1386038!2d62.470736!3e0

  2. Jade was our first cruise and then we did Epic and Escape and we enjoyed them all. Our next cruise is Jade to Norway in June. As others have said there are differences especially with entertainment and dining/bar options but there are much less people on-board and I am looking forward to sailing on Jade again post dry dock and seeing the fjords.

  3. We did this cruise in 2015 and have been to Barcelona 3 times including a few days prior to our cruise on Epic. As another poster has said be careful in Barcelona but don't get paranoid, I have always felt safe but took extra precautions from pick-pockets and scam artists.

Barcelona has a lot of great buildings and other tourist sites and we especially love the various tapas bars. For the cruise ports our favourite was a semi-private tour of the Amalfi Coast from Naples. For the other Italian ports, you will need to take an excursion or train to get to Rome, Florence or Pisa. In my opinion Pisa was not worth it, I regret not making the extra effort to go to Florence. Cannes will be a tender port and for Palma the port is quite central, we used the hop-on/off bus but it was raining when we were there.

  4. Are you able to walk ?

The historic farm at Ortenes is two or three kilometres away -- on the opposite side of the fjord from the railway.

Alternatively there is quite a pleasant walk to the little chapel that you will have seen fairly early on the train ride up from Flam.

Yes we can walk with no issues. Thanks for the suggestions.

  5. I will be taking a Norwegian Jade cruise to Norway in June and we will be in Flam from 09:00 to 19:00 on a Saturday. I have booked the railway trip to Myrdal at 11:00 but that is due to return to Flam at 13:10 so we will have another 5 hours or so before we need to be back on the ship.

Any suggestions what to do in the afternoon apart from a boat trip? I am considering the eMobility cars for a 2 hour tour but my wife is not keen.

  6. I have noticed hardly anybody goes to MDR ... or if they do they don't post about it. What's the story?

We have done both, one cruise on Jade we did all speciality only ate in MDR for lunch, last one on the Escape we did all MDR and buffet except for one lunch at Food Republic.

I thought the food in the MDR on Escape was very good, I had no complaints. I like steak and just about every night in the MDR they had some kind of steak dish.

  7. I am booked on the NCL Jade cruise to Norway sailing from Southampton on 11th June 2017.

When I booked the cruise it showed this on the itinerary for 17th June:

    Hellesylt 08:00 to 09:00

    Geiranger 10:30 to 17:00

I wasn't sure what this meant. Why does the ship only dock at Hellesylt for 1 hour? Has anyone has been on an NCL cruise to Norway who could explain it to me.

I am also slightly concerned that when I look at myNCL it no longer shows Geiranger and has Hellesylt from 08:00 to 17:00. I was intending to book a bus tour to Mount Dalsnibba from Geiranger.

  8. I was on the Escape just over 2 weeks ago in an angled balcony and there was a lock at the top of the door. I am not certain if the handle actually locked the door, as we always used the separate lock.

However I am not sure that it would be any easier to get into an angled balcony than a normal balcony.

  9. Are any main dinning rooms open for lunch on embarkation day?

Yes both Savor and Taste were open when we boarded on 15th October. They were also open early, I am sure we went around 12:15 and we were one of the first in and got a large table beside a window, but even when we left it was not busy.

  10. I was on this cruise with my family and luckily none of us had any issues. I am sorry for those who were infected and it impacted their cruise. The room next to ours was infected, there was a red sticker on the door when we left and we saw staff in full protection gear about to deep clean another room beside the lifts as we departed.

I observed NCL take action to try to control the outbreak as well as confining people to rooms, some of which has already been mentioned:

Buffet - no self service, staff served all food. No sauce or cutlery on tables,

you had to pickup plates and cutlery from staff on entry.

MDRs - no salt and pepper on tables, bread served by staff

Continual cleaning of common railings, lift buttons, stair railings, etc.

Continual reminders from staff to clean hands.

Sanitising of room cards, pens, etc every time one was exchanged with staff.

No ice in the rooms after the letter was issued.

  11. We are sailing on Escape in October and are scheduled to dock at 8:00 am but our flights back to the UK are not until 8:45 pm.

Really not sure what to do as I don't fancy spending 9-10 hours at MIA. I am sure others have been in this situation and I would be grateful for any ideas of things to do given that we will also have luggage.

I am thinking about going to MIA, leaving our check-in bags and renting a car for a few hours.
