  1. Just off the Breakaway last week and I had posted the question a few times about getting Root Beer on the ship. No one seemed to know so I am just updating what is available.

They indicate the regular stuff like Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist, Mt. Dew, Ginger Ale, Tonic water, Club Soda. We found out that they also offer Root Beer and Orange Crush. They are in cans but are available if you ask.

Thanks for sharing. My kids will only drink non-carbonated (so lemonade) so this might get interesting. Maybe I can water-down/flatten-out Orange Crush!

  2. Good to know - looking forward to getting dressed up for at least a few dinners on our cruise! I was worried that we would be the only ones.

It sounds like my husband would be OK without a jacket. Would he look out of place in a tie? I agree that women usually (enjoy!) dress up a bit more.

  3. The $12/pp/pd does include waiters/waitresses in ALL restaurants, specialty or MDR's. We usually give a little extra for over & above service in any restaurant. I know some feel they get better service in the specialty restaurants but we feel that they deserve it in either since MDR staff probably handle almost double the patrons that the specialty staff do so they deserve it, JMHO.

Don't worry about the tipping. You are correct that all restaurant staff, stewards/housekeeping are included in the $12.

    Enjoy your cruise. Bon Voyage

    Thank you for clarifying!

  4. You need to let your PCC or TA know it's his birthday they'll mark the records. When you get to your cabin they'll be a 'Happy Birthday' card from NCL waiting for you. Whenever you want the cake just give the card to the host at whatever restaurant you are at when you enter. They'll bring you a small cake after dinner. I don't think anything special is written on it....maybe 'Happy Birthday'. They used to sing but they stopped that sometime before May of last year.

If you want something bigger or more elaborate it can be ordered either online (Just sign onto your account and they're a place where you can order special things) or order it at Cake Boss when you board.

So we could have gotten cake in any restaurant? Darn, I just booked a $35 package to have them deliver one to our room on my husband's birthday.

  5. Last NCL cruise we took our 5 year old into a few of the "specialty" restaurants where she ate off the regular menu, and they didn't charge for her (we gave the waiters nice tips).

Those of you who mentioned that you tipped - I am confused. Isn't that what the $12/per person/day is for? Or is that only for housekeeping and MDR? I don't want to stiff anyone if I am supposed to tip them! That's why I'd almost rather just have to tip as we go on everything. All of these gray areas and unknowns for first time cruisers to learn the ropes on!

  6. We are first time cruisers heading out on the Sun in January. Looking to upgrade to a specialty restaurant the night of my DH birthday. We will have our children along - ages 11 and 7. I see that they eat free from the kids menu but yet, when I try to make reservations, it requires me to pay the same as I am for DH and I. Does the difference get refunded back to you via on-board credit provided that they order from the kids menu? It says 'per child pricing done on the ship'. Thanks in advance.

  7. We unexpectedly ended up in a hotel transfer van with our daughter when she was 11 months old. I was freaking out because obviously there was no car seat. I put her on my lap, put the lap belt across both of us, put her diaper bag on her lap (as an 'airbag'!), held onto her for dear life and PRAYED. Oh, and we were on the freeway in Boston...

There are several portable, travel car seat options out there. Of course none of them are probably going to be as safe and secure as an every day car seat. But, they have to be safer than nothing at all!

Here are just a few I found in a quick search (because I was curious!):

  8. Thanks for posting this! We would like to get our passports stamped and was wondering how this worked. I guess I was envisioning them stamping them at customs but since it sounds like you just use your room key/ship card for getting on/off the ship that probably won't work.

It sounds like maybe the port's office can stamp or direct us to someone who can? Then again, having to go through all of that takes away some of the 'charm'. It is almost like a gift shop souvenir then!

  9. I would have just kept the champagne flowing. :D

It was only a small portion of the cruise to celebrate so many wonderful years together! The same thing could happen at the restaurant down the street from your house. Frustrating? Yes. But enough to ruin such an important celebration? Nope.

  10. Yes, does anyone have a rough idea of the type of entertainment provided on the Sun? Anything family friendly?

Also, at what time of the day does the entertainment usually take place? I am guessing after dinner? 8pm? Looking at making our dinner reservations but not sure about what time to plan without any idea about what time the entertainment might be.

    TIA

I was looking at the Teppanyaki, if that makes a difference.

  12. First-time cruisers and first-time passport users. :)

How does that work when we board the ship? Is it similar to boarding an airplane? The passport, along with some sort of cruise doc (too early for us to check in so I don't know exactly what we will get), is our 'boarding pass'?

And do you take them with you when you get off at ports? I would assume there is some sort of customs to go through to re-board the ship? TIA

  13. We are looking forward to a balcony on our first cruise in January. I know we are setting ourselves up for future failure if we ever decide to cruise again! $$$

We are looking forward to many of the things that the OP mentioned!

We booked a balcony for both the fresh air (sea-sickness concerns...) and because we aren't huge 'people persons'. I am sure we will want to retreat to a somewhat quieter location than the pool deck. We will also be traveling with our kids and this gives us the option to sit out there and relax while they do something else in the room.

  14. From what I understand a NCL cruise ship crew member was attacked in Roatan so the cruise line was re-directing it's ships. I am not sure where they are going now. I will be going on the Jewel soon so I would like to know the destinations.

Is this still the case? Is NCL still avoiding Roatan? Looking at booking shore excursions for our January cruise but didn't realize NCL had stopped going there. Our itinerary still shows Roatan?!?
