She explained that her knees were shot and she was considering retirement. She said many fellow employees were being strong armed to extend their contracts.

FWIW, employees everywhere are overworked, pushed to the limit and if you're a nurse - your back AND knees are shot and the best view you will see is someone's arse and/or bedpan!
I just try to be appreciative of the people who DO show up to work and do their best. [remind me of this before my 1st cruise since 2020 on Dec 12. My 1st on RCC] I disembarked in Feb one week before the shut down...

Terminology matters. The infamous hotel queen of New York Leona Helmsley once asked a staff member who said an area was under repair during an inspection tour of one of her properties: " That's dirt, how do you repair dirt!?! "

Worn and dirty is apples and oranges.

i would think comparing Celebrity and Carnival might be apples and oranges

Sorry. I didn’t clarify better. I use the Carnival Mastercard for all purchases at home and then redeem my reward points for cruise cash/bar credits. I have also booked a cruise and paid for it at booking with that card to receive double points, then redeemed points for a $1200 statement credit. I use my card for everything—gas, groceries, bills, all purchases, and accrue points fast. I also use the Reward Boost feature in the bank card website and receive even more points. Just recieved 10/$1 on a purchase through ebags, and 6/$1 for Cheryls Cookies.

i need to be using mine better! I've been trying to pay down my cruise and haven't used it as you are saying.

I wish we had an In and Out burger.  I've heard so much about them and wondered if its hype or legit.  Would love to try one someday.

In and out does a great lettuce wrapped burger - they have that skill down - but are they better than any other? mmmmm I would go to whataburger for a #6 combo - In and out doesn't have bacon - who doesn't have bacon!

  5. How far ahead do you recommend booking a parking space? I'm cruising in October. It looks like park/cruise  and Falstaff are close in price, but I'm thinking I would be willing to pay the extra for a  Falstaff shuttle to and from the ship.

When I went to church as a child I always had to wear a hat, and often gloves for holidays. I would be chastised if I ever put my elbows on the table at dinner. Also my father was never seen outside the house without a hat on. These days I guess we're just happy our kids still go to church, regardless of what they're wearing, and if a man has a hat on, often it's a baseball cap and it's backwards!

My point is, times have changed and what was then, isn't necessarily where we are today. Much as some of us may wish it so!

Personally, I could care less about the tablecloths but I get why some are concerned, while others don't care at all.

This - so much love....well, I didn't have to wear a hat and gloves except Easter - but I had to sit there 3 times a week in a dress; people dressed in suits and nice dresses to fly - we had no cell phones or computers or HD TV's or cable.
Things change. I'm a nurse and OMG how things have changed in medical care - do you really want to go back to THAT?

The cool thing is - we all have choices. Right now I choose Carnival because it's closest to home and relatively affordable. Table cloth?  I'm the person who would stand up at the table and end up pulling it halfway off before I realized it was caught!!! I would SO MUCH prefer they maintained somewhat of a dress code in the MDR - but meh - what someone else is wearing/ doing doesn't change my life unless they are the drunk old lady all dolled up for elegant night falling over me in the show!!! [true story]
Someday when I have free time to travel and money to blow, I would like to cruise on a ship a little more elegant than Carnival and smaller and not so rowdy. I spent enough time being an officer's wife to EVER want to play dress up and look at me...my spandex support and high heel days are over. Cruise on...and hurry up October 10!!

  7. Let me know if you have any questions. You can also see my post from when I was on the ship http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2414173

    Enjoy!

If I haven't said it before - THANK YOU for posting your Glory review and funtimes and drink menus... I'm 16 days away from my cruise and looking forward to it so much!

I'll normally be sailing out of Galveston, but got a chance to go on this one with a friend. Never turn down a cruise opportunity!

  8. I was on that cruise. Lets get some facts straight.

1.) There were some choppy seas at time, but nothing worse than I have experience on any of the other January cruises I have taken.

2.) There was NOT a LARGE crowd at guest services. I sat and watched the whole thing--start to finish. There were about 100 people chanting and congregated at guest services. There were about another 100 watching them. That is a small percentage of the 3400 guests on board the ship.

3.) This cost carnival a lot. It cost them PR. It cost them lots in both Grand Turk and Half Moon Cay--as the own and operate both. It cost their employees thousands in removed gratuities. This was a no win situation.

4.) All that being said, I do think Carnival and the Glory staff could have been more receptive and more proactive. It took almost an hour before somebody finally came to talk to the "crowd." It was a safety issue. It was potentially volatile. And it was handles poorly. And while 25% off a future cruise is a significant future savings, throwing out some sort of compensation (required or not) would have been good business. A couple free drink or a $50 obc could have won them some positive PR.

5.) Its a January cruise. You WILL get some rough seas and you DO run the risk of weather delays and/or cancelations. That's why January is so much cheaper than most other times of the year.

Anyway....I was not in the snow. I got some nice sun. I met some new people. I ate some good food. And I still love cruising.

Good points - but no matter what they offered [short of a free cruise and reimbursement for this one] I doubt some people would have been happy. Personally - I think they should have passed out obc and/or free drinks to the people NOT in the crowd...don't compensate people for being *******s!! but the squeaky wheel....I wasnt there, so not my monkey.

It did remind me [as a new cruiser] that crap can happen - I'll take an extra book, some dramamine, wine and m&m's in case I can't get to the bar to use my cheers!

  9. Then topped it off by going to the steakhouse and they served me a complimentary chefs dish that was raw beef with horseradish ice cream on top. Who the heck thinks of putting ice cream and horseradish together? Let alone put it on raw beef. Everything else I tried was good so I did enjoy the AT.

The steakhouse dish sounds delish! I love carpaccio, love horseradish....and the horseradish cream...yum! I'd love to have it. Was it an amuse bouch or a regular serving?

  10. I have only one question after reading all of this.

Do cruise lines have any legal recourse against passengers who incite or participate in riots?

The situation as described at Guest Services would have really scared me.

I would have felt threatened by an unruly mob - hands up/yelling demanding the captain... isn't that how mutiny starts?!!! [jk about the mutiny part...]

  11. Very easy way to resolve this. If the OP pulls up a deck plan and the room in question is categorized as a spa cabin, then they will have spa amenities. If it's not then either the OP was mistaken or yes there was a glitch. Either way, Carnival will not give spa access to a non spa cabin as part of the cabin's features. And I can't imagine a glitch that would screw with the cabin categories. Sometimes people book on the spa deck thinking every room up there is a spa cabin, but that's not the case. The OP needs to look at the deck plan.

You would also think the OP would have called to ask the question...oh wait, they did and were told it was correct...

I agree that the website should be correct and the customer service response should be dependable. So I also agree that since you can not depend on accuracy at those levels - you should get screen shots, names, ID number, and possibly even record the calls. Which is what the OP was advising.

  12. we are sailing on Saturday! So excited.

I'm mostly interested in knowing how the service was - rooms and food

does it feel crowded? As of today, there are only 24 rooms not booked and I bet they fill those up! Is it just swarming with people everywhere? I'm hoping for some peace and quiet maybe on Serenity...

  13. She forgets because she is passive aggressive and is seeking attention. What a load of baloney... stop making excuses for her and for yourself. You seem to love pleasing her. Accept it , move on.

Moving on Dad, thank you for your VERY insightful assistance!!

I actually got very good ideas from helpful people and was so afraid that I'd be completely beat up!! My concern is for tablemates and staff - no excuses offered for my own behavior. I recognize passive aggressive...and I recognize arses...

  14. I'd be careful with this. So many people say they're allergic or intolerant to things just because of distaste or other reasons, that servers start to not take legitimate allergy issues as seriously. Every server I know has a story about the "lactose intolerant" person who had no problems drinking milk, or the "allergic to tomatoes" person who wanted the tomato left off the salad but had no problem with their pasta and marinara sauce.

For the sake of people who do have dangerous allergic reactions to some foods, I think it's a good practice to not fake an allergy just because of a distaste for a particular item.

I agree with this - it dulls the edge of awareness when 75% of people are "allergic" and then someone who truly is allergic may not get the attention to detail they need.

  15. Seriously? When I read this the first time, I thought it was an April Fool's joke. Your travelling companion hates onions but won't tell anyone until the plate arrives and then sends it back. This person needs a big attitude adjustment. My oh my are they self-indulgent and wasteful.

As for what you could do... inform the maitre d' for ATD. Even if you do not get the same wait staff each night, you will be greeted the Maitre d' who should get to know you and help save you some discomfort.

Wow, still cannot believe the arrogance of this one.

She "forgets" to ask because she's distracted... sweet as can be on all other things. Maybe because I'm the type to pick out what I don't like or just eat anything that lands in front of me - I don't get it! I'm the easy one out of the four...waitstaff is gonna love me!

  16. Send an email to icare@carnival.com with booking number and notate any special needs requests; this should come up when they scan the card at the front desk to seat you. Also mention to maitre D; even with anytime dining if you plan to be there about the same time each evening and have the same wait staff they may bring the next nights menu for you to check out and pre-order.

Awesome - thank you for the address. It's such a picky thing and lately when I'm not in a hurry, I try not to enable and just go ahead and enjoy my food, but when it holds up table service argghhhhh

  17. You should read the menu and if unsure ask the wait staff. Not sure what your friend expects if they won't look at the menu...

Yes, I realize that...but in order to enjoy the meal and to make others at the table have an uninterrupted service... I will suggest it.

I was asking if there was a way to handle that ahead of dining? As in, would speaking to someone ahead of time make a difference. Plus, sometimes things do come with onion when it doesn't say so...
