  1. The dresses are gorgeous! Wear them! It makes me happy to see women wearing these because these days, "formal" seems to have gone by the wayside. I miss seeing the ENTIRE dining room in formal attire. I recall cruising 20 yrs ago wherein almost every man was in a tux and every lady was in a floor length "gown." And I'm in my 50s . . . wear them and have a wonderful time on your vaca!!!

THANKYOU for your kind words, I can not wait to wear my gowns, I wish I could have seen what you describe, it would have been amazing.

I never have the chance to look so pretty, so I am very excited.

  2. It's good to see the class system we invented and everyone claims no longer exists is alive and well.

To those that want to dress up - feel free to do so and look down upon the riff raff that choose to do otherwise.

To the riff raff, revel in the fact that not only did you enjoy your cruise but by just wearing a pair of jeans you put one in the eye of your self appointed superiors.

    Miopyk

    Wowsers!!

    Are you serious?

You are saying that because I want to dress up, I would be looking down on those who chose not to? I would never say that someone is Riff-Raff, due to the fact that they didn't decide to scrub up in formal wear, on formal night.

That is not the case at all!

I am not upper class, I am actually

    "Working Class"

Wanting to take full advantage of the chance to dress up, look and feel special, have a lovely meal, and have a photo taken with my family.

It will be nice to have a photo hanging in our home, where we all look lovely!

And here in Australia, with a comment like the one you just wrote, you would be classed as a bogan!!

  3. No, not too formal at all, you will look fantastic. Those dresses look amazing. You will see plenty of people in formalwear still; but not everyone. Just don't worry about those who are not and enjoy your formal nights the way you want to.

Thankyou, I was really happy with our choices, and I still am, I guess I just needed reassurance that we were not going to be the only ones on formal night, not wearing jeans and tops.

  4. What beautiful dresses,I think that you will both look stunning.

Personally I don't think that they are "too formal" as they are stylish and elegant.

The outfit for your son is perfect, and as we would say here in the north of England,

He'll look as "smart as a carrot".

    Thank you for your reply,

I guess I am having second thoughts, because I see so many people on the RCCL board, saying how much they hate formal nights, and no one dress's up, they wear jeans to the dining room!

I have been really looking forward to the formal nights and so have my family, but now u am unsure, so just looking for others opinions on the attire we have chosen.

    "As smart a as carrot"

Lolz, I have never heard that before, gave me a chuckle 😜

  5. I just don't know what the big deal is, if you don't like to dress formal for one or two nights on a cruise, then just eat somewhere else that night.

For my 10 night cruise, only two nights are formal.

It would make sense to try another dining option for those two nights if you don't want to dress up.

A formal gown really does not have to weigh a lot, no more really then a nice long summer casual dress, the chiffon ones are so light weight, don't wrinkle, and roll up super small, same as a suit, they take up no more space then a pair of pants and a jacket. I'm sure a tie won't tip the scales on the bag weigh in.

I just don't see what all the whining is about. You either want to dress up or you don't.

Seriously it took me not much longer on my wedding day, to do my hair and makeup, then it would for me if I were going out to a nice restaurant.

30-40 mins, and I was ready.

I see all these excuses and that's all they are.

    It's easier to say

"I do not want to do formal, because I can't be bothered.

    Or

"I do not want to do formal, because it does not appeal to me"

And that's fine, not everyone likes to dress up and look pretty, but just stop with all the drama!

  6. My daughter and I have chosen these dress's for the two formal nights on out upcoming cruise.

Royal Caribbean, Sydney to Tasmania, it's a 10 night cruise so we will have two formal nights.

The long dress's are the two I have chosen, the short dress's are what my daughter has chosen.

Could you let me know if you think they are "too" formal?

    Thank you.

Also my son has picked this outfit, he is 12, but not a normal 12 year old, he is on the autistic spectrum and is about the size of a 7 year old.

Would this be suitable for him?

    Thank you.

  7. I have only had the chance to dress up In a nice gown ONCE in my life.

    My wedding day.

    I missed my year 10 formal, I didn't have a year 12 formal.

All wedding's I have attended, were cocktail dress. So I am really looking forward to the formal nights on my upcoming cruise.

Am I the only one? Seems that way, with all the negative comments on here, about how much drama it is for them to spend a little time doing their hair.

It takes only a few mins to put on a beautiful gown, to be honest I can't wait for the opportunity to look like a princess. Even if only for a few short hours.

  8. Can you print off a some info about the ports that you are going to visit for the kids to read? You could put the info in 2 x A4 size soft flexi folders. They weigh nothing and take up no space- you just slide then into the pockets in their suitcases.

(I used the folder to keep my cruise compasses in)

That is a great idea, thankyou :-)

  9. My kids wouldn't wear co-ordinating outfits EVER. I see it all the time on cruises and have a bit of a chuckle. Definitely not a Canadian thing.

We won't wear matchie matchi clothes, just similar colours.

    Especially for the formal pics.

Any photographer will tell you, if having a family portrait done, clothing that is simian colors will always look best.

  10. I would get some books about the ports of call. Books with history of the places that they will visit. Or gather info from the internet, print it out, and put it into a lose leaf note book. Give the note book as a gift. Put some blank pages in the book so they can write about their trip. Even if you plan to visit an old fort there would be info that they might like. It would bring their trip to life before they even get on the ship. Put info in about the ship, size and where it was made etc.

That is an Awesome idea, thank you

  11. Why would you bring Hawaiian costumes?

I would let the 14 year old girl pick out her own formal wear (and other clothes).

My 4 friends who have been on many many many cruises between them, have told me that every single cruise they have gone on, both in Aussie waters and to the islands, have all had a hawian/island theme night.

Also FYI, my daughter has picked both of her formal outfits her self, an my son picked his too, I can upload a pic if you like.

Our dress's look good together , but are totally different. We spent a whole day online looking for the dress's :-)

  12. We always try to have coordinating outfits for boarding so we look sharp in the boarding photo. Do they have a beach bag for excursions? Travel alarm clock? Watch? Cruise cash to spend on on-board purchases? Sunglasses?

Friends/family normally give them cash for Christmas, this year they will be giving them American dollars instead of Aussie dollars.

So they will have a few hundred each to take with them.

They could always do with new sunnies, kids tend to scratch them, so new sunnies will be on my list.

I've chosen coordinating outfits for the formal nights, but hadn't even thought about the boarding photos.

    So that's another great idea.

They don't wear a watch, their phone tells them the time.

Beach bag is on the list :-)

  13. If we were doing this, I'd tell the kids ahead of time that it's going to be stockings only on Christmas morning. I'd do this 1) because Christmas cruises are expensive, and even though we tend to go all-out on Christmas, this would be "plenty" for a present. 2) stocking stuffers would be easier to transport.

    Stocking stuffer ideas:

    Phone cover

    Socks

    Jewelry

New CD -- if you're going to have a way to play it on the cruise

Small artsy projects -- I'm thinking of a tiny origami kit one of my girls received last Christmas; it was about the size of an altoids tin -- I've also seen small Spiro-graphs; I loved those when I was a kid

    Fancy gel pens or pencils

Candy -- try for unusual stuff like chocolate covered sunflower seeds

    Books and book marks

    Small puzzle

Hacky-sac or other game that can be shared with new friends

    Hat

My kids always ooh and ahh over the little bitty-bits near the register at Books-a-Million. And the dollar spot at Target. Those are good stocking stuffer places.

They will still get a good amount of non cruise Christmas gifts, but I have ready told them that, the presents will be halved this year, due to the cruise. And they are more then happy about that. But I also want to set them up with as much cruise related stuff as I can at Christmas.

  14. Mini torches and mini bedside clock with glow in the dark numbers (our room was dark), those mini sunscreen bottles that are on a keyring ($2 shop or cancercouncil), something magnetic (our cabin walls were "magnetic" and we put the fridge magnets we bought on them) mini travel diary (from Kikki K or Smiggle) a small shoulder bag for your daughter and a mini backpack for you son (for ports visits). Buy one of those cheap name pencil cases and add the name of the cruise vessel (or their names) and fill with a highlighter, pen, post it notes etc. A small coin purse with some coins for fun spending money. Sunglasses and a new cap or sunhat, binoculars, books.

Hope this helps. My teens loved their first cruise.

Thank you, loads of awesome ideas there

  15. So we are taking our teenagers with us on out cruise In feb.

    Girl (14)

    Boy (12)

We are going to make the cruise as part of their Christmas present.

What can we buy them to add to it?

I am getting new luggage for each child, and will be putting new formal clothes in their luggage, what other items can we buy for them?

I also have Hawaiian costumes for each child, and a Laynard each.

  16. On rhapsody can anyone please tell me the difference between

    Standard inside room

    Large interior

    Superior interior

    Will have 2 adults

    2 teenagers

I know on P&O in the quad rooms all beds have to remain as single when all our beds will be in use.

Is it the same on rhapsody?

Or could we have a double bed and two singles?

Anyone have pics of the rooms I am looking at?
