Allegiant Airlines in the US has an Allegiant Honors program.

Free services offered to active duty, reserve duty, and veteran members of the US Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force. Coast Guard, Public Health Commissioned, NOAA Officers, with ID.

Up to 2 checked bags, no charge for oversized, one carryon, one personal item.  Spouses and dependent May qualify only if traveling on the same itinerary as the eligible military traveler.

Since Allegiant usually charges extra for everything above the personal item, this could be a big savings.

If you already paid when making reservations, you can get a credit.  We find it easier to not pay ahead, then show ID when checking in at the airport.

Allegiant Airlines DOES honor ID carrying defendants  flying alone.  I have been doing it for years. Here is what they offer military :

  2. Thank you all for your replies, I really appreciate it.

I really appreciate what you brought up Enforcer, I do use some meditation and positive thinking to deal with it already. Up until recently it has been the main way I could cope with the pain. I think getting the parking permit will be a victory in some ways, because it's something I have been struggling to ask about for a couple years. Hard to ask for it when I couldn't find anyone to really admit I had a problem.

If I am honest with myself this is where I am at now. Ended up having DH pre-read my post on here because l have been struggling to actually voice my concerns about our trip. I don't like admitting that I need the help or that I can't do it. I am very overweight as well and combined it just kind of feels like a failure. I know I shouldn't look at it that way, and limiting myself in the process.

This is actually on my to-do list. I have been fighting the idea a long time because I am very uncomfortable with needles/blood draws/anything going into my skin from issues with getting labs done as a kid so it's something I haven't had the nerve to do yet. At the point where I am going to go suck it up and try it - and hopefully I can get the insurance to pay for a part of it. My mother has actually had success in the past with it, so I know it can be helpful for some people.

Jpcello, you brought up a great point. I had actually been looking at some of the scooters like the luggie last week. It's not something I can afford to buy outright at the moment (but it is something I want to look into.) I can actually rent a Travelscoot which is kind of similar to a luggie and I may decide to do that. I think if I don't rent a scooter I fill go ahead and at least rent a wheelchair.

I keep hoping I will feel better than I am and maybe the trip will be do-able without any help like a wheelchair or a scooter. Think I need to just stop hoping that I won't need it or worrying that I'll have paid for the rental and not use it. Needing and not having it would be decidedly worse.

I needed a scooter a couple of times a year while traveling so we rented. Each cruise cost me around $300 for one. After a few years I realized I could buy one for what I was putting into rent. Forget about insurance helping out, I have top notch and they wouldn't do anything. I watched Craig's List and found a practically new GoGo for $400. A scooter will save your vacation. Most of them break down easily if you don't have a HC cabin.

Travelscoot is what I eventually want but as long as mine is functional I'm not willing to spend the money. Someday.........

  3. Listening to the local newscasters mis-pronounce the name. Ugh.

    National news got it right.

Doe mi neek' a, not Doe min' ica.

Irritated me ,too. It is one of my favorite ports. Hope all will recover quickly, they really need the money cruisers bring to the island.

  4. I think it's wonderful and your mom are considering a cruise. She sounds in better physical shape than me, LOL. Might I suggest a wheelchair (just in case) and a handicapped room. Ships are much bigger with more walking than we realize and a handicapped room would be large enough for two. Handicapped cabins are no more expensive than regular cabins of the same category. Please keep us informed. Your mom is lovely and I'd love to hear if you go on the cruise.

  5. I find the rudest behavior is when I see scooters and wheelchairs waiting patiently for an elevator and able bodied individuals rush ahead of them when the elevator door opens. The reason this irritates me so much, is because these people often have to wait a long time any way and they don't have the option of taking the stairs. :(

Thank you very much for pointing this out. I am one of those needing a scooter and have had this happen to me a bunch. Even when my husband is at the door trying to make room for me. One time we waited for 10 times to get into an elevator.

My DH is extremely patient and never says anything to anyone, but there have been times he has pointed out that we have been waiting, only to be told by impolite later people that they were waiting, too. He will get me into the elevator and then take the stairs himself.

The worst was one time a man was holding on to my scooter to use it to crawl over me so he could get a table in the Horizon Court (Princess). People speak about getting run into by scooters, LOL, they have no idea what we endure . I don't expect special treatment, but at least treat me equal.

  6. Ocho Rios is our favorite! Dunn's River Falls is a must do. I recommend going early and getting a cab to take you there as it is much less money and you will be on your time.

I also love love Ocho Rios. We did the river tubing as well as the falls.

You will see a lot of posts that say they stay on the ship during Jamaica. I love it so much that I personally look for cruises that stop there.

  7. Princess has a Secret garden .I have often wondered how Princess keeps their berries so fresh after many days at sea?

Actually, if you wash your berries in a bowl of water with a splash of vinegar they will stay fresh much much longer. And they don't taste like the vinegar.

  8. Isn't it curious that none of the posters on this thread even considered another option that is very popular all over planet Earth - with the exception of the USA.

Raw beef is served in many forms in places like England, France, Holland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Russia.

    And it's wonderful.

You people need to get out a bit more.

I LOVE raw beef. Unfortunately most other countries have healthier beef guide lines than the good old USA. I will only eat it when I know who has raised the cow. I buy half beefs from a girlfriend who raises them.

  9. The getting there and getting back is the worst part of vacation for me. We have done enough Fort Lauderdale departures that we have everything figured out, flights, lodging, food, and travel to the terminal. The only thing i need now is finding a two hour flight from Oregon to Florida, LOL. Two hours is the most i can fly now due to painful health conditions . We are taking our first CA coastal cruise next month, I'm sure we will have a blast.

I'm sure we will do more FL departures but I think they will have to be 10-14 day cruises to make the flight worth it. How wonderful for all you lucky folks who live so close to ports :-) ! Maybe someday :D

  10. i think my answer would be, after all other cabins have been sold open HC cabins up to anyone and everybody. I agree, it would be silly to have the ship sail with empty cabins that could have been filled.

Perhaps new ships can plan for more doors to be wider on non-HC cabins that would allow those on scooters and wheelchairs to access cabins by choice. I LOVE having room to turn my scooter around but I am also capable of backing out a door.

With only 10 cabins available to HC passengers that means only approximately 20 of the usually over 2000 passengers are able to get cabins they NEED. that's a mere 1% availability .For non-HC people ,not getting the cabin you WANT probably won't destroy your cruise. Taking a HC cabin from someone who NEEDS it probably will determine if they are able to go.

Please, if you see cabins marked as HC and don't qualify, just ignore them like you do HC marked parking spaces.

  11. i hope your friend changes his mind. As another scooter needer i understand what your friend is feeling. It's hard thinking you can be a burden. The more someone fusses over me the worse I feel. Explain to your friend how much you would like to have them join you on this cruise and a scooter will make that possible. I let anyone I am with know that I am happy enough sitting things out that I can't participate in, i take my iPad and read. I would hurt if I felt I stopped them from doing something they enjoy. Family and friends now realize this and do their thing. I have everything I need on the ship so they can go on some excursions without me and we can all be happy. Good Luck.

  12. I'm disappointed in any cruise line or passengers whose attitude about a HC cabin is "somebody's gonna get it". There are actually some of us who need a HC cabin that do make last minute (38 days out) . I stick to a cruise line that doesn't encourage passengers to take cabins they don't qualify for. Hubby and I decided last minute to take a last minute Coastal Cruise, prices were amazing, and my poor Hubby deserves a break. We ended up taking a mini suite as that was the very last HC cabin available. Would I prefer to pay half for less room ? Sure, but I can feel comfortable that my chosen cruise line hasn't sold cabins i need to those who don't. If there aren't HC cabins available i have to skip the cruise. It isn't a matter that the cabin i "like" isn't available, it is the cabin i NEED .

Does not getting the cabin you want change your plans to take this cruise ? It does to most of us who NEED that cabin.

    JMHO

  13. Tracy's King Crab Shack might not be the anniversary dinner atmosphere that you are looking for, but they have the most amazing King Crab that we have ever eaten. It is a little bit rustic, outside in a covered area, you order at a food truck like window then wait for your order to be prepared. If nothing else go for a one leg appetizer:)

This would be my suggestion , too ! Are you going for atmosphere or GREAT food ? I wouldn't miss it for the world. My favorite is ordering the crab bisque and dunking the king crab legs in it. They do offer beer and a covered eating area.

Hubby won't eat anything from the water so i treated myself to Tracy's for lunch then we went to the Hanger for dinner. The most impressive thing there was watching the sea planes take off.

Also eaten at the Red Dog Saloon in the past.... I can only hope Twisted Fish (where I haven't been) has atmosphere if you are looking for it because none of the others mentioned do :p

  14. There was a piece on one of the national newscasts last night about how citizens of Bangor' date=' Maine, are doing this PR campaign to get people to pronounce the name of their city correctly. In the lead, La Jolla was mentioned as one city whose name is mispronounced quite a bit.[/quote']

I was born in BAN GOR .. I have no idea how people can pronounce it with an E except to blame it on the Roger Miller hit "King of the Road", LOL

Now live in Or y Gun (Oregon) and now cringe a little when people pronounce it the way it is spelled. Damned if you do, damned if you don't ! Either way , both places are beautiful .

important to note that being 3 weeks away it might be difficult to book accessible transportation if eve available as it's generally limited and books well (months) in advance.

    thank you !

  16. Pros of taking own:

He knows how to drive it, and it fits him (I assume).

He has it to use at the airports as well as on the ship.

    No additional costs.

    Cons of taking his own:

Can get damaged loading onto/off the plane.

The best way to manage it at the airport is to gate check it. He rides the chair to the door of the plane, transfers to the aisle chair (unless he can walk onto the plane), and the airline takes it down their freight elevator to load onto the plane through the luggage door. About 30 minutes before landing, you notify the cabin attendant that you have a gate checked wheelchair you will need brought up, and also if you will need help getting out of the plane with the aisle chair. When you land, someone in your party should get off right away and wait at the door of the plane for the wheelchair to be brought up. Once it is, "snag" it and make sure no one else tries to take it (it happens, unbelievably), and wait until he is brought to the jetway off the plane, then use the chair to get to the connecting flight or to the curb for your transportation. Always check the chair immediately for any damage (before leaving the gate) and file a claim for any found immediately.

This is great advice, Thank You. I always travel with my scooter but never thought to have hubby get off first to grab it. We just sit and wait until someone tells us it is up. You are correct that others will think it is for them, LOL.

  17. I realize you have your hotel already picked but this might be an option. We stayed at the LaQuinta near the airport. Fantastic family restaurant within walking/scootering distance across the street.

The car company sent 2 vans and one car to pick up our group of 8 and another group. Dropped us off at Pier 91. Then had transportation back to hotel or airport. It was ready and waiting for us when we came off the ship. Amazingly easy !

Have a great time in Alaska.

  18. After renting scooters for numerous cruise and land vacations, i bit the bullet and just bought one. Got a fantastic deal on Craig's List. When I took the cost of renting scooters and tipping for wheelchairs at airports into consideration , my scooter was a fraction of the cost I had spent.

$300 is about the cost to rent a scooter for your cruise. The company will deliver it to your cabin and you will leave it there when you disembark .

    Have a wonderful time.

  19. for my october cruise i booked the lowest price inside cabin. A couple of weeks later i was upgraded to a better location. A couple of weeks after that they moved me to an outside and within 2 days to a balcony. Anything is possible. That is from a if to a bb.

    nice !
