  1. One thing I noticed with the GeoBlue plans is that the maximum medical coverage drops to $100,000 from $1,000,000 at age 70. Is that enough? Wouldn't want to find out the hard way that it wasn't.

I've been purchasing single trip coverage (from Trip Insurance Store) for less than the total cost of the trip. It seems that the lowest premium is for coverage at $500. I'm more interested in having higher amounts of medical and evacuation coverage than getting reimbursed for the cost of the trip.

We have the basic internet package with our cruise. Can anyone recently on a cruise (preferably Silhouette) answer as to whether they were able to make wi-fi calls on board using the basic internet package. Thank you.

On Silhouette last week, my wife received a wifi call, Tmobile bill shows "5 min/wifi call", no additional charge. This was with the basic wif package.

Last time, we stayed in FLL and drove into Miami day of. Next year, we will stay in Miami. Used an AMEX benefit to knock $200 off the hotel price. Takes some of the sting out, and puts us a short UBER ride away.  As long as we can minimize the ‘ouch’ of Miami hotel prices, we prefer to stay there.

Could I ask which Miami hotel you used that Amex credit at, I was just looking for a place for our January cruise, thanks

  4. We’ve done two TA’s, one eastbound on QM2 (May 2016) and one westbound on Holland America Koningsdam. (Oct 2019). I remember on the QM2 it was referred to as a “crossing”. It was a nonstop run from NYC to Southampton. When we first got on the ship in NY, we were surprised that all the deck chairs were tied down, and it seemed like there were no typical deck activities. After one day, it was apparent why. There was 24/7 fog, damp, cold weather. We had booked the cheapest room available and were essentially looking at it as transportation to Europe. I was impressed with the stability of the ship in moderately rough seas. I remember my wife was happy with some of the activities, especially watercolor classes. I won a little bit playing blackjack. I’d do it again if the price was right, but with the understanding it was different than a typical cruise.

Last fall, we booked a westbound TA on Koningsdam from Civitavecchia(Rome). This was our third Holland cruise, so we had an idea what to expect. There isn’t the same emphasis on “festivities” as with Royal/Princess or even Celebrity. We really enjoyed the ports, especially Madeira, beautiful island. We also found our favorite bartender from previous Holland cruise, and spent some enjoyable happy hours at his bar. Also really enjoyed BB King club, but there wasn’t much main showroom that we found enjoyable. Met lots of interesting fellow passengers, and booked another for fall 2020!

  5. Just got off Koningsdam on Nov 13, happy hour was 400-630 in virtually every bar (may have been a few exclusions). Second drink(had to be same drink) was $2, and they would hold it till you finished first drink. Saw one group share abottle of champagne.

If you're at the Ocean Bar, tell Michael and Charles Bud and Kathy said hello! Great staff!

  6. Hi

We live in Northern NJ (Bergen County) and our next cruise leaves out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Originally we were planning to fly down the night before the cruise leaves, stay in a hotel that night in Fort Lauderdale, board the ship the next day and fly home at the end of the cruise.

I booked the flight home a while ago since the price was decent but have held off booking the flight down as it’s been more than we normally pay to fly to Florida.

My husband suggested driving down. We would need to rent a car since we have a flight back already booked. I reserved a rental car in case we decide to do the drive down. He thinks it will be a fun road trip.

We were thinking of leaving two days before the cruise and just drive through to Fort Lauderdale and still stay in our pre-cruise hotel the night before.

Any advice? Is this a crazy idea? Would you break it up more?

    Thank you in advance.

We do this several times a year from Monmouth County. We've been stopping in DC to visit our daughter for a night then Savannah, then Lauderdale. Savannah is beautiful if you've never been there. We're planning to do it again for April cruise, Flying would be cheaper, but we really dislike the whole airport/flying process.

Rental rates are usually very good when the agencies want to move cars in or out of Florida, we've gotten rates for springtime "drive-out" as low as $5 per day.

We've also gone via Amtrak several times, some plusses and minuses to that.

It can be very tiring. I think the return after the cruise may be worse, so if you do that maybe stretch it out a bit.

And, it's one way to see Pedro's hat at South of The Border!

  7. We just got off Regal with a similar rate to yours, and I’m still not certain why. I don’t think I’ve ever lost $100 in a ship’s casino , and am now seeing several more cruises at similar prices for March and April. Trying to convince dw to go again...

(I did book one early this morning, still working out details. With Princess insurance, it’s almost a no risk cancellation.)

And I did make sure to go in casino, actually won enough to pay one fare!
