  1. @notamermaid- again thank you for all of this wonderful information!  Based on my research the port is about 30 minutes drive from Ville Haute, which is where we have booked our hotel.  This is my SO's first trip to Europe and I thought staying in the center of the old city would be a great way to start out for him.

Per AMAWaterways this is the port location:

    Luxembourg-Docking-Location

Looks like I've got some more reading to do today!!  Again, thank you for the plethora of info!

  2. Oh, we are also arriving a day early to do Luxembourg.  I was just reading through  the posts on the Moselle (again thank you Notamermaid) and am so excited to share with my partner the info about Patton!  He's a huge history buff!  And macarons!  Yummmmm,  one of the reasons for starting in Luxembourg (for me) was to get some French food!  Having traveled to Paris numerous times, I'm very much looking forward to a good French meal prior to boarding.  Escargot anyone?!

  3. Thanks everyone for the input!  Rob - great info -we are super excited.  We are also hoping that by traveling in the fall we'll avoid the heat and low river problems.  I'd be devastated to miss that part of the Rhine (it's a large part of the reason we're going!).   Great tip on Trier- we'll probably do that as well.  Fingers crossed that we'll be able to experience some of the tours.  The brief searching I've done shows a lot of places closed internally for tours (i.e. the Residenz Palace).

Thanks Notamermaid for the additional info, I'll be sure to read through!

    Thanks Paul!

  4. I just traded my timeshare week for an Arosa Rhine River cruise from Cologne, north to Amsterdam and Belgium for June 19, 2015 through Interval International. Has anyone else booked a river cruise this way? I would love to hear of your experience.

Frankt18 - we are considering this same cruise on A-Rosa in 2016 - wild love to hear your review when you return!

  5. CWRob - I completely agree. Though it makes us more comfortable to know we will be spending a week with a variety of people (in terms of age and backgrounds) versus being the only 40 something's on a ship with all 80/90 year olds. I would imagine if the tables were turned you would't like to spend a week with a bunch of 20 something's.

  6. Oops!! Hit send by accident! My husband and I both really enjoy meeting new people. My husband is an avid networker and has no issues starting up conversations with anyone! We also don't tend to judge by the cover so to speak. My best friend is twelve years older than myself. And I love her dearly.

I think he just got skittish because most of the literature depicts an older clientele. I have read that certain lines cater to an older demographic (Gold Circle) and it seems most of the posters on CC are more traveled. I was just looking for input from fellow neophytes. :)

  7. Thank you ALL so much for responding to this post!!!!! I wasn't sure if I was going to get any replies!

super_grover (Love your handle btw) would LOVE to hear your review when you return. Where are you cruising to?

ewizabeff - same! Would love to hear your review and where you are going!

caviargal - thanks for the response. We are absolutely considering AMA. Uniworld is very intriguing to me because of their interiors which look so sumptuous. And A-Rosa keeps popping up but I don't see enough feedback on them to make me feel comfortable booking. Would really love to hear more feedback from people off those cruises.

Again thank you all for your responses! I can't wait to show my hubby!!!! :)

  8. Hello all. DH and I are looking into a 2016 river cruise for our 40th b-days/10 year wedding anniversary. Any recommendations for younger cruisers out there? My hubby is concerned we'll be out of our element. Currently looking at Uniworld, AMA and A-Rosa. Very intrigued by A-Rosa but not many current reviews.

  9. Thanks caviargal and host jazzbeau for your responses. Caviargal - one of the 2015 dates we are considering for AMA is an " in appreciation of wine" cruise. That looks fun to us. Hopefully they will have similar trips/dates in 2016. I'm interested to hear if anyone has recently done one of the tours with A-rosa. I've read in this forum that someone said their ships are ugly - but then again someone also said the same for Uniworld and IME their interiors are stunning.

  10. My husband and I are in our late 30's. We are looking at booking a river cruise (our first) for 2016 to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and both of our 40th birthdays. We'd like to do on of the "Castles on the Rhine" type trips and have looked into and narrowed it down to AMA, Uniworld, A-Rosa and possibly Tauck (if we can swing it). Anyone have any recomendations as to which line - one that especially has a wide range of ages and or caters to the younger crowd? Really good food is also an important feature to me. Thanks for any help!!!!!

  11. Hi JP and Chris. My husband and I are looking into this trip for our 10th anniversary in 2016 (yes, I'm an early researcher). Question for you - the ride up the Rhine and the view - were there a lot of castles and nice scenery? Or did you find that it was just one area and more industrial. I've seen comments about this on other sites. Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!! Megan and Jon
