  1. I'm seeing the Journal Square parking garage rate as $14/day. You take the PATH ($2.75/pp.) World Trade Center train two stops to Exchange Place. Two elevators or escalators take you up to the street level where you cross a small plaza to the light rail station on the street (ramp access). You buy a ticket from the machine ($2.10/pp) and take the light rail to Bayonne 34th Street. Then you call a local cab to the port for $10-12. They will pick you up on Ave. E or in the parking lot (accessible crossover from the light rail platform).

Thank you so very much! I am printing this out right now to put with my documents.

  2. Then you will have to take their shuttle back to the airport to get a cab or book a car service. Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City also has garage parking. You can take a cab from there or take public transit and a cab - PATH from JSQ to Exchange Place, light rail to Bayonne, and local cab into the port. I have done this trip with luggage - PATH and light rail are accessible and I can provide details if you are interested.

You are a life saver. If you wouldn't mind providing the details I would greatly appreciate it incase we have to have that as a plan B. Thank you so so much for being such a great help on these boards.

  3. It's pricey. Expect to pay $55-65 each way.

The indoor parking is not at the airport. It is off site in Newark, but it is a garage. Call them to see what your options are for getting a cab. You might have to take their shuttle back to the airport terminals.

I just called and the two people I spoke with acted like they had no idea what I was talking about and said they could not help me with finding a service or tell me what was there to take to the port.

  4. Ugh! This has me so stressed out! I'm not worried about sailing through the storm, just the flooding that could occur at the port. If anything I am going to reach out to an aunt who lives in the Beacon/Fish Kill area and see about parking there and figure out how to get down there. My husband's aunt has a non refundable hotel booked for us in Parsippany. My aunt has a small cottage and is in the process of moving, which is why we are not staying there in the first place.

I went through Fay last year on the way to Bermuda, but we left from Baltimore.

  5. We're booked on the Breakaway to Bermuda leaving this Sunday and this storm has me a little concerned. I'm hoping that the seas won't be too rough on the way to Bermuda and I hope the stabilizers keep the ship from rocking too much. Has anyone here sailed through a tropical storm? Do you think they will try to sail around it as much as possible?

We leave Saturday on the Liberty to go to Bermuda. We sailed through Fay last year which was as hit on Bermuda. We had very rough seas and they did as much as the could to keep us away from the storm. But with a place like Bermuda there isn't anywhere else to really go. We are planning on having rough seas Saturday and Sunday. This is something to keep in mind when sailing during hurricane season. The cruise lines will keep everyone as safe as possible. But unless the cruise is completely rerouted North, we are all going to feel some rough seas.

  6. We are heading out on Liberty on Saturday to Bermuda......hope we can get away before the storm and still make it there. Looks like the hurricane might make landfall south of the NJ area early next week.....hope all is good at the Port Liberty upon our return!!

We are also going to be on Liberty on Saturday. We went through Fay last and it caught us off guard. Now I have been stalking the weather. We're hoping to be able to pass the storm. But I am thinking the seas may be a choppy at the least for the first day or so. We're driving from Akron, Ohio so hopefully the rain isn't too bad then. I'm mostly worried about any flooding that might happen at the port's parking lots.

  7. I totally understand the not having a plan B.

My husband and I were in Bermuda Oct of 2014. We arrived the day Hurricane Fay hit. We were late getting into port the first day. All of our excursions we had book were canceled as well as there was some down trees and flooding. We just did our own thing. We still fell in love with Bermuda and knew we'd go back one day. They were cleaning up from Fay and prepping for Gonzalo and the locals were still as nice as could be.

It worked out that we are able to go back in two weeks and we want a plan b incase we run into weather issues again.

We'd really like to go into St. Georges this time. We probably will after the caves our first day in port since we will already be half way there. Weather permitting we are going to check out the sea glass beach up there. We went to the one closer to the Dockyard last year and it was amazing.

What did you friends like most about St. Georges?

  8. Generally, what route does the ship take on the way to Bermuda? Is it pretty close to the diagram/picture on the cruise website or do the ships take a southerly route to South Carolina and then turn East and is it the same on return?

(I understand route would differ based on weather conditions, referring to situations where weather conditions are ideal the entire journey.)

    Thank you.

My last couple cruises I would watch the gps tracker that plays on the cabin TVs and some of the TVs around the ship. If your line offers that, that might be cool to check out.

  9. Just got back and did what we could on the cheap side. We bought transportation passes as soon as we got off the ship. We hit aquarium and caves and swizzle inn (not cheap but cool) in one day. We did the bus from dockyard to Hamilton. Got off early in Hamilton and walked thru town to terminal. Took the bus to aquarium. Then the next bus to caves. Walked across the street to swizzle Inn for lunch. Took a bus to st. George and walked past unfinished church to ft st Catherine. $7 per person for that and very neat to walk around. Plus great views. Then we walked back to tobacco bay. We stayed til closing listening to music. Took a bus back to Hamilton and ferry back to dockyard. We saw the whole island in 1 day. Including 2 day bus pass and admissions for 4 to all, we spent about 300.

That sounds like what we are trying to do in a couple weeks. Thanks for the run down! Glad to know we can do that in a day.

  10. We are driving to Cape Liberty the morning of our cruise from Parsippany, where we are staying over night. I printed out Carol's directions from 14-A.

I am going to print out directions from Google Maps because I read that gps doesn't work well for this. I have been given two options and not sure which one to pick.

Option one is I-280E with tolls.

Option two is NJ-24E and I-78 Express E

Which do you recommend? We don't mind paying tolls, we just prefer the more simple of the two routes.

    Thank you!

  11. I will be in Bermuda in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone knew of any yarn shops or craft stores. I did some searching online and can't find any info on the one and only yarn shop I have come across. I asked the Bermuda Tourism group on facebook and the place they told me to look at looks mostly like a clothing store.

    Thanks!

  12. Bermuda last October.

If you heard anything about Hurricane Fay (the first of two hurricanes to hit Bermuda in one week) we were on the Grandeur of the Seas in 15ft waves in a pretty deep part of the Atlantic. I was woken up at 4am to very rough seas, I went to our balcony to look and was amazed/shocked/slightly terrified for a moment. I woke my husband up and we went to the top deck to watch for a bit. We woke back up at 6:30 for room service (poor girl who had to carry the stuff) and watched the waves a little more. I mostly slept because the waves were so rocky it made me sleepy until about 1. My husband ventured out about 10 am and said the ship was dead. He saw only a couple guests and there were sick bags everywhere. By 1 we were told we would have to idle off the coast until seas were safer to dock. The seas were stll pretty rough but was starting to die down. We got on the island after 6. The whole day I was worried my husband would never cruise again since this was his first.

The only thing that upset me is that we were told it was a tropical storm by the cruise line. Probably to reduce panic in others or because when it started we were still 10 hours out. But we found out from locals it was in fact a hurricane and that another one was headed their way.

My husband was totally fine with the hurricane experience . Plus it makes a good story in a way. We fell in love with Bermuda and its locals and talk all the time about when we can go back, expecting it to be a while....

We just booked another Bermuda cruise for this October.

  13. I am thinking of buying the Royal Replenish drink package. This is the one that includes coffee and teas (from the coffee shop I believe), soda, fresh juices and bottled water.

I was wondering what your opinions were on this package. It will be a little over 100.00 for me to get. I am more of an iced coffee, iced tea and water drinker then I am a soda/sweet drink person. I would take up on the fresh juices with breakfast as well. I also drink A LOT of liquids.

I can go without, but it would be a nice treat since I would only have an alcoholic drink a few times.

    Thanks!

  14. Thanks for the replies! Liberty is costing us $500 more but we are leaning towards it anyway just for a new experience. It looks like there is more to do for my son.

Now I have to find out all I can about that boat!:):):)

Oh and find out about the drink plans ;)

They have many drink plans. As far as finding out info, here on cruise critic is awesome. My husband who is normally very laid back and doesn't get excited until we are on the ship, has looked at a ton of youtube videos on the Liberty. It is cute how excited he is since he is normally so reserved.

We get the soda packages. From what I read Liberty does not have the Freestyle Coke machines but they still offer soda packages. I am thinking of getting the package that includes coffee and tea from the coffee shop, bottled water, soda and fresh juices. I believe that is like 19.00 a day. Soda I think is 4.50 for kids a day, 6.50 for adults and comes with a tumbler. They have three or four alcohol packages as well. All the details are on the Royal Caribbeans website.

    Have fun planning!

  15. I have sailed 5 Royal cruises and 1 Carnival. We have a cruise booked on Liberty in October for my 7th cruise.

Our experience with Carnival was poor. We did book a cheap, last minute cruise, but the cheap, last minutes cruises with Royal are a much better experience. At least in my opinion.

I did the Adventure Ocean program when I was 13 in 2002. I enjoyed it then and believe it has gotten even bigger and better. My brother who is three years younger did it on all our cruises we took as a family. He was 10, 13 and 14 when we took cruises as kids. He loved the programs.

Liberty looks like an AMAZING ship. It will be my first time on a larger ship and we are so excited. We are going with my husband's aunt and uncle and this will be their first Royal cruise. They sailed Carnival a few years ago (not sure which ship) and are really looking forward to Royal.

Have you gone over both ships with your son? My parents sometimes let us help pick depending on cost and things like that. It helped get my brother and I more excited. Which ever line and ship you pick, I am sure your son will have a great time.

  16. I will be in Bermuda in October for the second time. Last Oct we arrived the evening Hurricane Fay hit so most of the attractions were closed the following day. So we did not make it to the caves or aquarium. We still had an amazing time and fell in love with Bermuda. We went to Black Bay sea glass beach. I just read about another sea glass beach on St. Georges that I believe is called Alexandra Battery Beach.

I was thinking since the caves and aquarium are more on the eastern part of the islands that we could do all three then take the ferry back to the Dockyard from St. Georges.

So I can show the idea to the others in my group, what bus route would I need to take from the aquarium or caves to the beach? Then what would be the best way to the ferry?

    Thank you.

Good question. No reason to stay near Newark Airport unless you are sightseeing in NYC.

Please answer some questions for me. What is your sail date? Liberty or Summit? What route are you coming in from Ohio and what time do you expect to arrive? IMO for the 5 or 7 day cruises leaving on Sat it Sun it makes sense to park at the port so you can get on the road home early and not have to mess with shuttles.

Would you consider Hotwire? Take a look at the end of this thread - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2206398

We will be on Liberty sailing Oct 3rd. We will be arriving late Friday evening. If we do go into the city it won't be until after the cruise. I have family in Beacon, but they will be between houses at that time. Or I'd be able to stay there. We are most likely taking I-80. I was looking at hotels around Scranton as well. I am open to any suggestions.

I'd do hotwire. I have in the past. As far as my other family I am not sure if they are comfortable with it.

    Thank you!
