Just saw that Toyota Mirai  looks good now where do you get the fuel. So now we have a choice electric and hydrogen electric.  Least Toyota is doing research into new fuel sources and even Hyundai and Hyundai make ships so who knows.  

People are scared of anything that is new especially if it can go boom while driving, anyway you wouldn't want people to have hydrogen cars as some people tend to not look after their cars and if a leak occurred due to lack of maintenance and as for ships they are well maintained by highly qualified engineers who treat their power plants with the utmost care so a leak would be very rear as they would be right onto it.  If Hydrogen comes into contact with oxygen then some nasty things happen. It took awhile for people to take to LPG in their cars as they were skeptic and didn't quite trust the stuff, fine for BBQ's  and I think the only reason some bit the bullet and got their cars installed was fuel prices were sky rocketing but the cost to install them was expensive and you had to cover a lot of miles to recoup the cost back, now a lot of hire cars and taxi's have them as they do the miles.  A lot of people were thinking about putting them in especially when there was a government rebate but now that's gone and LPG is not so cheap because fuel companies found they can make a fortune because there is now a demand. The government trial natural gas and LPG and a couple of them went up.

the moment some genius comes up with something that works and is truly cheap to buy and run be assured the tax's that will be put on it will make it like all the other fuels expensive. 

There is not much alternatives to fossil fuel as it is either unstable and dangerous or you have to be plugged in to a power point every couple of hours, no good to ships Lol.

And a big thank you to those engineers for keeping the ships running especially the cruise ships we travel on.  

People like you have valuable knowledge that should be passed down to the younger generation. Every day I hear how young students are aiming their careers in computers, even the trades are not sort after much anymore. I don't know anyone who is looking at a career in marine engineering unlike when i went to school I new a couple friends wanting careers in marine mechanics and aircraft fitters.  It seems the young ones want to do computer science these days.

The reason I put that nuclear idea out there was to try and get people to see how important it is that we find better alternatives, get the juices flowing so to speak,  it was not meant to insult anyone.  Sure nuclear has big big issues and until we can control the radiation after a disaster then it can never be used safely and I do know a lot of ports won't allow those ships to berth ever.  as for hydrogen it also has it's own issues.  

Another thing, if there is more engines using diesel then the oil companies increase the price like they did with LPG as LPG used to be dirt cheap but now cars are using it oil companies up the price, as for cargo and cruise lines maybe they should invest and pull together to research better fuel and cheaper plus cleaner as they are the ones who will find it hard to make a profit when the time comes and fossil fuel is restricted and expensive. you don't need much for fossil fuel to increase in price just look what happened when the conflict in Iraq started and petrol prices sky rocketed over night and it can happen again and shipping lines and airlines are the most vulnerable.

sure these old sayings have been around a long time but some younger generation possibly has never heard of it and that does not imply they are not bright, there are a lot of old sayings that the younger generation have never heard of as they don't get mentioned much these days.

If you have all that valuable knowledge on fuels, marine engines etc why don't you put it to good use instead of attacking me because I had an opinion.   

As Chengkp75 Stated the coal burners went out in the 1920's but hey you lot built one in 1959 explain that and it's still operating carrying passengers and for stack or funnel look up Wikipedia.

Funnel is the smoke stack that smoke or steam come from, it depends which way you look at it, a bit like color or colour which one is right. Now instead of criticizing someone with an idea how about coming up with your own suggestions on a fuel of the future seeing how you seem to know something about ships and marine engines. 

Put it this way I would love to see ships run on cleaner, safer and cheaper fuel that would benefit all of us and not just the lines. To criticize someone who comes up with ideas does not get anyone anywhere. I read about people on this site complain about how the cruise lines are raising their costs because of rising fuel costs but no one comes up with ideas to help the lines reduce costs.

How many of you have ever wrote a letter or sent an email to the cruise lines stating how you enjoyed the cruise, but I do know the lines get a lot of complaints and criticism, how about instead of criticizing the ships you went on ( unless it was so bad in every way that there is no hope of saving) instead give polite suggestions on how they can improve not tear them apart. 

I love cruising and I don't want to see them fade away because of rising costs to the point that they become non profitable.

Yeah we call it NIMBY Lol.  check internet for the acronym.  a good trivia question.

So it seems you are not too happy with the nuclear idea then how about hydrogen which is clean and you can use seawater. If you are looking at the internet again make sure you research well before commenting.  Some ships are using gas turbines and a great idea but the moment there is a demand for a particular resource then the oil companies up the price and they did this when cars started using the LPG  and again that will run out too, then what.

Put it this way, if you don't need smoke stacks and large fuel tanks then there is the extra space to drop a nuclear plant in and yes i have been on board both coal and nuclear powered and guess what, if you want to throw the internet at me then look out your own front door, you have a coal fired ship still operating on your great lakes in Michigan called the Badger, maybe you should go for a cruise on it. It was built in 1952 and still going strong and yes it is not Russian, see you can't blame Russia for everything . So who is smoking the coal dust now.

So far I have not got one decent ideas on how to get better fuels only criticisms.

yeah and when was that ship built 1959 I think we have advanced since then, you look at the ships back in 1959 they pretty much were coal burners. Nuclear power has come a long way since then so has the marine diesel engines, the ships that do have the nuclear power plants today the power plant is smaller and no need for ugly smoke stacks so there is more room even in the engine room and no need for bunker fuel tanks and again more space.  The ship can run on low enriched uranium not the highly enriched stuff on warships and subs plus nuclear powered ships can cruise at a lot higher speed and do it all day long.

I have news for you lot they are testing nuclear power on commercial ships like cargo carriers now so it's in the pipeline. You can't claim something that was build 60 years ago and pretend we have not advanced any further.  We are running out of the good oil so we need to find a way to advance to the next level in life or we just become ignorant and turn our backs on advancement, sure there needs a lot more work and research to be done on nuclear power but the world is full of uranium.  We have gained a lot of new technology from the military in the past that the military has tested and used and successful then unclassified it and we are using a lot of that technology today look at the internet for one.  If you can come up with a better way to run all the machinery then I am all ears.

Nuclear power engines on ships are very small where a diesel engine is massive. you will find that there is a couple of commercial ships that are nuclear powered and they have no issues, one is a Russian ice breaker and because it is nuclear it has power in reserve for the big tasks.

Sure you will get those people who sue because they have a right to sue but there can be protections put in place to restrict people from suing for instance when you enter a public car park you abide by their terms and conditions and if you don't like them then go park somewhere else, called limited liability i think it's called so the same with traveling on these ships you abide by the terms or don't sail on that ship. Admittedly I don't know much about nuclear power but what I do know is the good old fossil fuel is slowly running out and it is getting more expensive to get and in a few years or so the only ones who can afford the cruise fare will be the very rich. So we all need to think of better, safer and more cleaner ways to get around and get our products in from overseas. If you use wind well then you need to depend on the winds, then there is solar great on sunny days but you are screwed in a storm with no power because there is no sun and maybe we could use lithium battery power on the ships and it has it's own problems as well, so what do we use. I know give everyone an oar when they board and they can row, no need for a fitness center onboard and by the end of the cruise everyone will lose weight and will be fit.  but to be serious it is becoming harder for ships that use the old bunker fuel to get into some ports because of the sulfur in their fuels and how their engines burn the fuel.

Glad you like the idea.  every time there is a nuclear accident it is pretty much always at a power stations and where do they put these power stations, they build them on fault lines.

Navies around the world have been using nuclear power for decades with great success unlike the power stations. 

Why don't cruise ships run on Nuclear power fuel, clean burning and ships can run for 20 years without refueling.  fossil fuels are running out and are expensive, so we need to look at other alternatives.   War ships and submarines run on Nuclear power with no problems.

everyone is complaining about rising fuel costs on the cruise lines and how bad the bunker fuels pollute and how you can get cancer from the smoke from the bunker fuel.

Maybe it is time we rethink about other alternatives that are less polluting and more efficient to run.

Hi all

I thought I would open this thread up again as I can't believe how long this issue has been going on of where to put the visiting cruise ships in Sydney Harbour and it is now 2018 and they still can't decide what to do about the problem.

Just see the top of this thread to see when the first comment was made, there is possibly earlier thread than this one and if any one finds one that is earlier than this one on cruise critic let me know because I am curious as to how long the Government has known about this problem and done nothing to fix the issue before it got to this point when we are at breaking point in Sydney Harbour.

Sending ships to Port Botany, that's a big mistake because of traffic problems etc. I love cruising and love leaving Sydney Harbour and turning towards the heads to start the cruise and it is even better when you come into Sydney through the heads early morning and the water in the Harbour is so blue and the sky just as blue with the sun just rising in the east, nothing more beautiful and to deny our visiting guests from far lands to the same beauty is a shame and a disgrace.

You rather let the brawl continue it seems. If one extinguisher stops a brawl and possibly someone getting killed and if you are getting bullied it is totally wrong to retaliate because that will lead to a brawl so maybe you should be banned from cruise ships because you want to fight with me for my opinion and everyone is entitled to have an opinion and I suppose you want these thugs to not be banned as it sounds like you support them.

I think this tread has had enough talk on this stupid brawl and should concentrate more on getting quality cruising which is what cruise critic is all about.

If you got involved you could end up off the ship so yeah "you are damned if you do and damned if you don't"

Like I mentioned earlier in this topic, maybe grab a fire extinguisher and let loose and if it is power type it is good as a taser if not better but very messy and possibly you might be put off the ship as well but it would stop the brawl as no one will be able to see less alone fight.

In Australia years ago you could go on a cruise to the islands and didn't need a passport but because of those type of idiots we now have to pay for passports and go through all the processes to get them and keep them renewed all because of people who can't behave in public so yes ban them from even leaving the country and maybe I was a bit harsh in banning the families who went off the ship in support but certainly ban trouble makers who go looking for trouble.

I have seen idiots walking on the hand rails showing off in not too calm sea and guess what Captain threw them off and that was the days you didn't need pass ports, big problem to the Authorities on the Islands.

Deck chairs been thrown over board, It's hard getting a deck chair at the best of times with out them going overboard and yes off the ship next port for them.

then there has been drunks going around in the disco trying to start a fight and lucky people just moved away from them and security grabbed them very quickly and don't know if they got put off the ship but never saw then again for the whole cruise.

So do you really want to be on a cruise with these idiot, I don't.

Thanks for the Star rating advice and yeah it seemed to me that the rating was self administered but I thought nah they would have to get the rating from a reputable organization but apparently not, just build a ship and give yourself 5.5 stars because its new but the service and food can be crap. So now I know that I won't waste money on going on 5 star ships as these ships charge more to go on them and you don't get any better food or service than the lower star as I have found out.

Watch out cruise lines I'm going to give you star ratings on your service, food,cleaniness.

The rating will be

1 to 5 stars and 5 stars being fantastic overall

so if the food is mediocre and poor variety and the rest such as clean ship, service fantastic, then they will score a 3.5 star but if all 3 areas are poor then they get a big 1 star and I don't care if the ship is so called 5.5 stars self rated because I am sick of going on these ships and end up very disappointed because of poor food, bad service.

Sure you can go on 3 ships all belonging to the same company and get different outcomes such as one ship gives you bad experience then you go on another one of their ships and the experience is fantastic so I think that each ship should be rated and not wipe out the company because of one ship.

so next time you go on a cruise do that 3 simple checks such as food how good, service, cleanliness and we might get a better experience and those that get a bad rating might pick up their game.

I'm not interested in the entertainment because every ship has that problem I think and as for activities, that can't be rated as the bigger ships have it all and to rate a medium size ship on activities wouldn't be fair

But I find people seem to question food quality, service and how clean their stateroom are more than anything else.

So start rating and hopefully it will catch on and we will be able select a ship and know exactly what to expect. put your score in this site and the reason it got that rating.

I really don't care what happened but if you are involved in a brawl and it has affected every passengers enjoyment I think there should be some stiff consequences and let the Authorities deal with who started it and go from there and I would agree with the Captain get them off the ship. Put it this way if you can't behave in public then there should be repercussions not just a smack on the had and told don't do it again. I think these families know how these goons behave in public because I know how my family behaves in public and defiantly not like them, far from it. I have met people who love to brawl and that's what they do, they go looking for it and the best way is to walk away don't react because that is what they want. I know I certainly don't want them or their families on a ship because if their families can't control their louts then yes ban them too and yes the cruise line I spoke to stated they would consider the ban if their names came to their attention.

I want a nice friendly cruise, not a cruise from hell.

I am wondering where and how these cruise lines get the so called 3,4,5,6 Stars because I have been on a 5 star rated ship that the food had less variety and poor service than on a 3 star ship and you were pretty much paying for extras that I thought would have been free because it was a 5 star ship. Maybe I should start my own rating system but on service, food and variety not because the ship is new.

On a 5 star ship I should not have to Que up at the bar to get a drink there should be drink waiters roaming around and as for food there should be a very good variety of food with very good presentation and not feel you are been forced into an expensive specialty restaurant every meal time because there is no variety. so can someone tell me how these cruise lines get their star ratings and does that star rating cover Service,food etc.

Carnival Australia stated that they were planning on banning them on every ship that belongs to Carnival and its associated companies and I wrote to Royal Caribbean stating I like to see them banned from their lines as well and if we all send an email to our favorite cruise lines asking them to put a ban on these thugs and that ban should be extended to the families that went off the ship as well. they should be on the no fly list as well because if they fight on a ship they will possibly fight on a plane because they don't know how to behave in public.
