  1. I know this is an older thread, but I wanted to post an update in case anyone did a search and found it. I was in Roatan earlier in this month (May) for a week and all the road construction has been completed so there aren't any more delays. It was MUCH easier to get around!

    • Thanks 1
  2. I’m currently at Sol Y Mar. it’s not a cruise ship day so I have the whole place to myself. Feel free to ask any questions. I’ll prob be here another couple of hours. The sand is soft, no water shoes needed. There are spots that look like they have turtle grass, but plenty of spots that don’t. There are a couple swings and volleyball net in the water.

  3. As I said before they will take less than pristine, perfect bills on the island. The places that I have found the most fussy about it is the tour operators. Probably because they are going right to the bank to deposit possibly thousands of dollars at one time and it’s the banks that won’t accept torn or ripped bills. The smaller local places primarily do business in lempiras but also accept dollars. They have the opportunity to “get rid of” anything that could be questionable before they deposit it in the bank by giving it back as change. Just my observation and experience.

This last time I went to the bank I didn’t get one crisp, new looking bill out of all the money I got which was made up of $20s, $10s, lots of $5s and $1s. I never had one issue the entire week. In fact when going to a restaurant, bar, gas station, or tipping my taxi driver, they didn’t give them a second glance. Sometimes I got lemps for change, sometimes dollars.

Thank you for the info. Much appreciated. I’m hopeful the delays won’t be so significant when we are there but it’s always best to plan with possible delays in mind so thank you!

If they are allowing travel still on only one side I don’t see it being any different then, but there’s still a little bit of time before your trip, so you never know. You’ll just have to see how it is going and plan accordingly for on the way back. Have fun and bring bug spray. I got eaten alive on West Bay Beach this last time!

Thanks for the info. We have never been to Roatan but will be stopping there on our cruise April 4. We are thinking of taking our kids to Infinity Bay, West Bay for the day. Not knowing the geography, I’m unsure if this construction will impact our journey. Would this construction zone impact a trip from Coxen Hole cruise port to West Bay? Thanks for any input!

Yes. That is on the way to where you will be going. Allow about an hour and a half travel time each way for possible delays. That may be a little much, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks for that info. Your reviews and info on LFK are part of what made me book it this time, that place looks gorgeous!

You’re welcome and thanks. You’ll love it! Some of my friends that I met when we all stayed in the Beach House just went back for a week and got home yesterday. They had an awesome time.

Hmmm, we are going to Little French Key in April. Is construction going on along the way they will take us to get there?

I didn’t go that way this time so don’t know if they have construction there or not but there wasn’t any from the port to LFK in December, just coming from Sandy Bay and they had put gravel down on both sides then. But I wouldn’t worry too much about it. It’s the same way that they go to get to BFK and the drivers will make sure you’re back in plenty of time.

Thank you so much for your reply.  It looks like we may be able to miss that mess if it is on West Bay Road, I think.  We are just planning on the Sloths at Victor Boddens, some scenic photos with Roatan signs etc, a little shopping, and the only one i am concerned about is snorkeling.  We were wanting to snorkel the Blue Channel, it is over that way a bit, so we will have to see how that shakes out.

Again, thanks for the input. :classic_biggrin:

You’re welcome. Have fun on my favorite island!

  9. I was there for a week at the beginning of this month and they had traffic stopped one way 24 hours a day (yes there are actually guys with signs and flags out there at all hours) between the Roatan Rum Company by the lighthouse on the hill on West Bay Road to down past some of the resorts. They are in the middle of finally doing the roads the right way by making them concrete. Problem being that they need to cure for almost a month before they can let any traffic on them. At least that’s what I was told by a local. So there’s a large section that while it is poured and looks good, you can’t drive on it.

If you’re going that that way I would allow at least an extra hour each way for transportation time. They seem to stop traffic for a very long time instead of alternating quickly like we’re used to here in the US.

and when they say "crisp," they mean it.  those bills better be near perfect.  we had a couple of bills rejected, but we had enough so it wasn't an issue.

I have found this to be somewhat true when dealing with tour operators but if you go to local grocery stores, restaurants, or gas stations they aren’t nearly as picky. In all my times there I never had near perfect bills, but they need to be in decent shape. I just came back from spending a week there and they were far from “crisp”. I did make sure they didn’t have any tears or marks on them (which is what they are concerned about), but you could tell they have been around. No one batted an eye.

  11. Yes they do have monkeys and actually when I was there last month they also had a Sloth which was a first. A guy was walking around with it and a monkey by the bar.

You would never know there was a fire if you haven’t been there before. The only things really affected were the Beach House and some cages that were right next to it. Now there is a new bar and restaurant in it’s place. Go. You’ll have a great time.

  12. When I stayed at LFK in August I brought a bunch of school supplies since I got them super cheap during the back to school sales. I gave them to one of the managers - Carla at LFK and she passed them on. They allow the kids from rotating classes in free one day during the week as incentive to do well in school. So if you wanted to go there, bring them with and give them to her. They will get to the right place.

I’m interested in this place as well - looking for a nice beach day with water toys and shade. I’d almost rather there weren’t animals, since it doesn’t seem like the right weather for some of them, but as long as they’re not mistreated I’m ok. We’ll be on a royal Caribbean ship in early February.

They aren't mistreated and there is lots of shade as well as sun. LFK isn't using the "channel" for the water taxi (BFK does somewhat since that's where their pier is, but that's not by where most of the people are and every time I've been there it's been the same) as was mentioned in a previous thread. They definitely do have the kayaks and paddle boards back out. Also I didn't experience a long line to pay and there were plenty of servers. I was there December 4 so without going back and searching, I think my experience is the most recent. There were 2 ships in port at the time - Carnival Glory and Norwegian Getaway.

  14. Yes I was just there at the beginning of the month. I have been there multiple times including a 3 night stay at the Beach House a few weeks before it burned down. They do have a couple jaguars (no interactions) as well as some birds, horses, and little pigs - super cute! There are various sections of the island where you can be in total peace and quiet with very few people around, or by all the action with music and more people. It has a little bit of something for everyone. The kayaks and paddle boards are also available for use. I suggest you check out their FB as well.

We will be on Roatan tomorrow. No LFK, but I’ll ask about it.

I have been to both. LFK and BFK. LFK is more commercial and much bigger. BFK is more primitive unless they’ve changed it since we were there. I like both for different reasons. Both have nice beaches.

The actual island of BFK is larger hence the name Big French Key vs Little French Key but the “useable part” is smaller. What are you going to ask about LFK when you are on Roatan?

Just wondering since you are so adamant- have you been to BFK, or is this just your pre-conceived idea? Just wondering if you have actually been to both and can compare.

I realize your opinions are subjective, just trying to decide which would be best for me.

I did go across and have a quick look-see when I stayed on the island. It’s mostly a straight across beach (like most typical beaches) and not as many alcoves and little getaways. You could probably do a You Tube search and find some videos but I’m not sure. One of the things I love about LFK is all the different areas there are to go to that are along the water as well as “inland”. It can be as quiet or as busy as you want it to be depending on where you are. I took a video on Tuesday but it’s over 7 min long so it’s too big to post. You should be able to see what I mean by searching videos or pics. Lots of different places to hang out, not just one long stretch of lounge chairs.

There was a fire on LFK and I believe it is not open at this time.  Try Big French Key.  It is more primitive but has a great beach.

You can also try Beach Club Roatan, which is a beautiful beach with a great restaurant and lots of water activities from wave runners to snorkeling and lots of other things.  It has the best horseback riding ever.  You can take a cab or Carnival has a tour.  NOT crowded.

They are open. I was just there on Tuesday December 4. Besides not having all of the big cats on the island (many of them are by Frenchy’s 44) and them doing construction on a bar and restaurant where the Beach House used to be, it’s the same. I had a wonderful day as usual. You can see BFK right across the way and it is nowhere near as nice.

  18. I just left LFK and it is indeed open. The big animals with the exception of a pair of jaguars are on Roatan at Frenchy’s 44, not LFK. They are building a bar and a restaurant in place of the Beach House. It was pretty emotional for me to go back but I’m glad I did. You shouldn’t be concerned about going there at all. There is no evidence of a fire besides where they have construction and that doesn’t affect the service.

There are no more jaguars all of them have been taken.

Since when? They still have some lions, tigers, and jaguars as of last week. Just no interactions at this time.

That's because Port Everglades you have to go through a security check, Miami you don't.

No it wasn’t that. The guy got lost once he got inside. He turned right instead of going straight. I had to chase him down with suitcase in tow. Actually, I had an issue with the Uber driver on the way there too. He couldn’t seem to find the way from the hotel to the port. They definitely aren’t as familiar with it as they are in Miami. Either that or I got two bum drivers on the same trip.

  22. I’ve had a problem with an Uber driver picking me up at Port Everglades but not Miami. They seem to be very familiar with the port and they usually call so they know where I’m at. There can be a line for the taxis and sure if time is getting tight, I would do it. But I’ve never had to wait more than like 3 min for an Uber. Plus they are a lot nicer than those nasty cabs and I love the fact that I don’t have to fumble with cash or credit card to pay.

Good thing is you have a couple options. One of which shouldn’t include the shuttle. I avoid the airline delay and worrying about getting to the ship on time by flying in the day before. I don’t like being at the mercy of going through a middleman for my flights. Besides I go mostly on points anyway so I have to do it myself.

I'm trying to decide if I should use Carnival transfers or grab an Uber (or Lyft) to get back to the airport.  Our itinerary says we get to Miami at 8:00.  My flight leaves at 12:06.  I have TSA precheck, FTTF and will do self assist. I booked my flight through Fly2Fun.

If the ship's on time, I feel like I could go either route and be fine.   If the ship's a little late, would I be better off with the shuttle/transfers or Uber?  I don't know if Ubers become in short supply if/when a ship arrives late.

I don't see anything in the Fly2Fun contract about what happens if you don't make it to your departing flight.  Logic says that I'd be better off getting a Carnival transfer since then it would basically be "all on them," but a contract is a contract and they may not help out no matter what if I needed a flight change.

Definitely Uber. I would never do a Carnival transfer. They wait until the bus is full and it can cost more than a car to yourself. Uber!
