  1. Disclaimer: Yes, I read and understand what RCI publishes as prohibited items:

    • Sharp Objects, including all knives and scissors. (Note: Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than 4 inches are allowed.)

I have read that some have been successful in packing small knives or multitools in their checked bags without issue.  What I am more interested in is what happens when I try to carry a small Swiss Army Knife (SAK) or better yet a Micro Leatherman off and back onto the ship when at a port o' call.  What's been the experience with folks in this regard, especially with those who've cruised Alaska with RCI?

    Thanks.

You read my mind on etiquette in the Windjammer. The last cruise we were on Liberty of the Seas a lot of rude people. I don't know if that was because it was only a 5 day cruise or it has just got that much worse. To be fair a lot of nice people too.

Perhaps some people are afraid the WJ will run out of food!

  3. Hmmm, I never said I was going to leave it up indefinitely or unattended, did I?  I will hang it on Independence Day, when we are in a US port and ensure it is properly secured and if I do leave the balcony for an extended time, I will remove it.  Not because I'm concerned one bit about the ocean, but I would never want to dishonor the US Flag by allowing it to touch the ground or surface of the sea.  I will remove it when I turn in for the night and see that it is properly and respectfully stowed.

I'm just curious as to why...what's the reason to hang an American flag on a cruise that is (I assume) sailing to and from the US, full of American passengers?

Well, in our case, we want to celebrate Independence Day.  When we cruised over Christmas, we put up some decorations as well.

  5. Hi all,

Just wondering if any kind of decorations are permitted to be hung on the balcony railings?  We'll be on a cruise over Independence Day and would like to hang some appropriate banners on our railing.  I think I could use either zip ties or some suction cup holders for it.  Does RCI permit this?  Has anyone seen or done this?

    Thanks.

  6. I always take a rope and some clothespins to hang wet garments on the balcony, oh, and I always book a cabin with a balcony.

Water proof rain pants are not expensive.

True, but they are one more article of clothing to pack.  I do have waterproof trail shoes and a raincoat that has some length to it.  I am planning to use some kind of fabric spray on a couple of my pants that can convert to shorts, assuming we'll hit rain on some of our excursions.  It may not work, but then again, it may...

    Thanks.

I assume you don't mean "check in date" but rather "arrival time", correct? If so, Biker's comment should be accurate in terms of actual check-in at the terminal, even if the cabins are on different bookings but all linked.

Well, actually some have a online check-in date one day earlier than those in the JS, according to the Royal Caribbean mobile application.  But we all plan to travel to the terminal together, check-in, and hopefully board together.

  9. Ten of us are sailing out of Seattle this summer.  Four cabins total in the group, but one is a Junior Suite.  Those in the balcony cabins (non-JS) have an earlier check-in date by one day than those in the JS.

On embarkation day, will we all be able to check in and board together, or will those in the JS get priority boarding and just have to wait on the rest?  We'd like to all have lunch together after boarding.

    Thanks.

The walking pace seems optimistic from the Mediterranean Inn, but you would know your pace.

    @Glaciers - thoughts?

Also, FYI, terminal doors are not scheduled to open until 9;45.  If there are any delays it could be closer to 10 AM.  Passengers will still be disembarking until at least 9;30 AM.  If you plan to arrive early, just be prepared to stand in line.

Thanks that's good to know about the terminal doors.  We are planning to arrange a shuttle at 9:15 from the Med Inn.

We don't mind hills, being from NE TN it's hard to walk anywhere without hitting them!  I like the idea of the monorail and would like to learn more about its route.
    Thanks.

Do you have a rental car in Juneau?  Across the channel on Douglas, there is a beach called Savikko Park. The beach is all sand, unlike the rocks you'll find everywhere else.  My guess is this would be one of the best places in Juneau to swim.

Hmmm.  We're doing a whale-watching tour with Harv & Marv's in Juneau, so won't be renting a car.  Too bad, sounds like a neat place.  Thanks.

I have a half wet suit I use for snorkeling in Florida at the cold springs.  It is helpful.  Husband uses a full wet suit.  If you have room in suitcase and can put it on quickly over bathing suit, why not?

Well, we're kinda bursting at the seams now and will have to cull quite a bit of what we've already packed, so I'll just have to rely on my own natural insulation!  Good suggestion though.

We were in Icy Strait Point last May '23.  While walking along the boardwalk above the beach we noticed a young guy who was in swim trunks ready to run into the water.  People stopped to watch to see what he was doing, and after a minute or two he ran into the water - not far (as it was quite cold - but he did drop his body into the water, then jumped back out.

A couple minutes later we saw that he was back in the water, squatting down, looking in the water.  Standing on the shore behind him was a young woman (wife, GF?).  Apparently, when he ran into the water, a ring (a wedding ring?) slipped off his finger and he was squatting down trying to find it.  The poor guy was still in the water looking around when we finished our walk.  I don't know if he ever found it.

Bummer!  I do hope he found whatever he lost.

It is opened 7 days a week.  The flower vendors arrive early to start putting together the bouquets.  Cash is easiest to use.  As for buying flowers later in the day, there will be fewer options.

    Happy Anniversary!

Great!  We plan to catch a shuttle from the Mediterranean Inn to Pier 91 at about 9:00 AM.  So. I'll have to hoof it down to PP to get the flowers, then hoof it back before then!  About a 30-minute walk each way from what Google Map shows, should be easily doable assuming they are open at 8:00 AM!

    Thanks much!

I'm a local Seattlite here. And I just joined the forums tonight!

What you want to do is take the Sound Transit Light Rail. It's public transportation, and it's a light rail train that goes from south of the airport, right to downtown Seattle, and then north. It's very clean and safe, and runs from 5am to 1am.

Fares for each person are $3.00 one way; there are ticket machines where you can buy paper tickets using cash or a credit card. You will then want to KEEP that ticket on you when you board the train; we have Fare Inspectors who come on, and randomly check for them.

Take the Light Rail to the University Street Station in the Downtown Tunnel, and then walk up Seneca street a fre blocks, till you get to your hotel.

    Good luck!

Doing some research for transportation from SEA-TAC (Alaska Airlines) to the Mediterranean Inn located at the corner of Queen Ave N. and W. Republic St.  Four of us with luggage arriving on a Friday morning around 10:00 AM.  Would the light rail be a good option?  How far from baggage claim to the rail station?  We can walk fine, but pulling/carrying luggage too far may make the wives unhappy and the husbands worn out!

    Thanks

  16. We're planning to rent e-bikes at the cruise port in Sitka.  I will take some trunks with me, along with a towel and some water shoes.  Looks like there are a couple places to swim at Sandy Beach Day Use Area and Halibut Point Recreation Site; both are on the way back to the port just off Halibut Pointe Road.  Both look to have public restrooms!  Plan is to ride around Sitka for the day, then on the ride back to the port, stop at one or the other for a quick dip, then return the bikes and hit the cabin for a nice hot shower!

  17. Cool!  We're sailing on Quantum out of Seattle this July, on our anniversary, so I'd like to take a big bunch onboard for the wife...she deserves it after putting up with me for this loooonnnggg!

What time does Pike's Place open on Mondays?  I'd like to pick up some flowers the morning we board, but may have to grab them the night before.  Will flowers be sold on Sunday afternoon/evening?

    Good information here.  Thanks.
