When you reach “a certain age”, the Viking insurance is the only one with a reasonable price. Now, for the cost of ones we have used in our younger years, we could pay for another trip! If anyone knows of a better one for the older generation, please let me know. Thanks!

So true and due to Age that is the only reason to consider using “ANY” cruiseline offered Travel Insurance. Most Travel Insurance (other than cruiseline sponsored products) are priced based on the age of the applicant as we age the risk of serious illness or accidents increases the cost of the premium. At age 75 and beyond the cost really goes up significantly. This is where cruiseline coverage starts to make sense as it rarely takes age into account. So compare if you are at or beyond the magic age of 75 and in need of TI coverage.

How many people read the Viking 17 page US passenger contract RULES?

Not me that’s for sure. But after the last couple years of hearing about Vouchers at least I knew enough to completely understand the Voucher rules that came with my vouchers. I also knew that there were many different vouchers issued and some had completely different rules based on circumstances and time frame issued. The earlier passengers did not have the advantage of knowing how difficult the Vouchers would become.

Not to belabor this issue but, as potential advice to others to avoid this situation in the future. Last year we were booked on Viking Mississippi (one of the first scheduled cruises). Unfortunately, we were informed a few weeks before embarkation that the cruise was cancelled because the ship was not yet ready (we already had our luggage tags). We were offered cash or vouchers with bonus. I sent an email to Steve at tripinsurancestore.com and outlined all information that I felt was relavent. About 30 minutes later he called me and educated me on all the ins and outs of the vouchers. He indicated that with the proper documentation, the base value of the vouchers could be insured with a third party. Documentation included proof of original payment, documents from Viking showing cancellation and rolling to voucher and new booking information. The important thing after this is to identify the initial payment date as the deposit date of the cancelled cruise. He then recommended several policies for our review. Steve is very helpful and knowledgeable and frequently has "town forums" here on CC. I suggest anyone making decisions about vouchers and unsure of exactly what they are doing to reach out to an expert.

Steve is great and has written all our TI… and he insured my Voucher after much research. Sadly I am not cancelling for a covered reason and that was no surprise either.

    That sucks.

Yep it does and I knew Not to have/accept a voucher in the first place. On a brighter note I just booked Antarctica with VIKING and I like the product. Have just decided to move on…. But am I a fan of VIKING front office NO or their Policies NO… but their on board experience and crew are great.

PS I’m sorry you are taking such a loss it hurts… I get it!

I am not being snarky and do mean this as positive praise...

    How absolutely adult of you!😁

Lol well I am actually mad at myself as I knew better than to end up with a voucher. I disregarded the voice in my head that said don’t do it. Every bit of it is hard earned money and not a Viking bonus. But I’m moving on and trying not to whine…

It's complex. Viking obviously markets the insurance under the TripMate branding.

The CFAR portion of the policy is underwritten by Viking itself and, as you observe, they make the rules for that portion of the policy. The rest of the policy (a more traditional set of insurances) are underwritten by Generali. It's not clear to me if the plan administrator is a separate company or a division of Generali.

None of which matters other than to say read the policy very carefully, no matter who fronts it! 🍺🥌

Generali is one of the largest insurance companies in the world and they OWN Tripmate, VIKING has a cruiseline policy much like buying insurance for a Princess or HAL cruise. The get a share of the premium paid just like an insurance agent would. This policy is designed for VIKING just as other similar police’s are designed for other Cruiselines which they sell to passengers.

Full disclosure I like the Viking product, dislike their policies and will also be loosing a $5800 voucher and I fully understand I agreed to the terms. Will still sail VIKING (and others) only mad at myself.

  7. Well I have cruised VIKING and am getting ready to cancel a trip “Knowing” I’m going to loose a $5,800 Voucher. But I fully understood the Terms and know since I can’t take this trip or a trip in 2024 that the voucher is lost. It hurts, but on the bright side I have booked an Antarctica trip for 2025 🙂

Maybe contact Christopher Elliot.  He has a staff that deal with theses types of issues.  Also try the Ombudsman from Condé Nast Traveler magazine.  There is no charge for their services.

good luck. Sorry that happened to you. That is a lot of money to lose.  Those voucher things caused problems for a lot of people.

I'm posting this separately because I don't know if I'm allowed to tell you about a new consumer advocate website just started by my friend Michelle Couch-Friedman.  It's called 'Consumer Rescue' and I wonder if she could help you.  Her site went live today.  You might check it out.

Hey did Michelle leave CE???? Wow

And yet the site manager who is mentioned above, maintains a head in the sand position concerning covid on this cruise.  Just wants to declare how happy he is that he doesn't have to wear a mask now and doesn't want to mention covid cases on the Orion or people who are sick but still show up in the lounge or group gatherings.

Why do you continue to harp on what a Steve does or doesn’t do. It’s his Forum and his rules. You don’t need to be over there if you are so unhappy.

  11. Ok my head is spinning! I booked a girls trip for Feb 26 2022. And purchased PVP (not Standard) which gives 100% back (in some form Or another).

We are more than 30 days off out, FCC expiring 12/31/2022 are likely worthless to us as my daughters both work.

Goal is to get as much back on CC as possible and end up with FCC as far out as possible. So I have two paths to cancel CFAR thru Princess TI or ????

in reading the website it seems they are applying cancellation penalties as normal and if you cancel either way whatever the normal penalty is (50% for us today I think) you get that back as a FCC vs loosing it completely. Oh I’m confused after reading all your posts and reading the confusing website. Can someone clarify my options.
AND I read the part about FCC are 12/31/2022 and also the FCC extends for 1yr from issue. BUT turn it says normal penalties apply right in the next sentence.

    HELP!!

Thanks for this post.  I was aware of the myir.net digital data base in AZ, but the link I have been using goes to a site where you can view all your vaccination back more than a decade even my yellow fever vax when you had to get it every 10 years.  I could also download a pdf of the list, but there was no link for a QR code for rthe COVID vax.  Because of your post, i realized that there is a second myir site, myirmobile,  which has a completely different interface and provides a more detailed list of vaxes that include vax manufacturer, when known.  And it has the link to download a  QR code for the COVID vax.  Access required a different sign in account, but it worked beautifully.  Thanks again.

Can you post the specific website for the QR code in Arizona. I am Vaxed and Boosted in Az and got garbage from the first website you mentioned. But have not heard of the second. Got both Vax at State Farm Stadium and it was the Az Dept of Health that sponsored those huge drive in events. Was Boosted at Walgreens and that info in not to be found anywhere but the initial email thank me and my Vax CDC card. This is a ***** show and I’m not seeing a way of verifying my Vax thru any system. Heaven help us if we loose our CDC cards!
