  1. We used Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours. They are for 1 - 3 passengers and every passenger gets a window seat. Not the cheapest around but you don't have to share with other parties and nobody gets stuck in the middle. I loved it and would do it again. They also do helicopter flights on Oahu and the Big Island.

Edited to add: They also do doors off which is so much more fun and makes for clearer photos with no reflections.

  2. Anyone taken the hoppa on hoppa off bus in Hilo? It looks like a great deal and a way to see much of the island for a good price.

We took the Hilo Hoppa On Hoppa Off bus last May. It cost us $20 each but it just takes you to places around Hilo town. We did a helicopter flight in the morning and afterwards jumped on a bus and saw Rainbow Falls and Richardson Beach Park. It also has several stops in the town including near the markets. Buses are about 20 minutes apart and I thought it was good value. We didn't use the Kona Hop on hop off bus.

  3. I just wanted to say that I read all of your review and it has been amazingly helpful. It's so nice to read a review from the perspective of another Aussie! I had even booked the same Road to Hana tour that you did.

I have a question - how did you find dealing with the security at American airports? What is the TSA like? I've never flown to America so I'm really nervous about that (not that I have any reason to be, it's just that you read all of the horror stories!).

But thank you again for such a great review. It's made me really excited for my holiday!

I am currently on hols in Chiang Mai sitting by the pool having a relaxing time, we just got off the Ovation Of The Seas last Friday in Singapore.

As for the airport lines, arriving in Honolulu was the longest we had to wait and it would have been at least a 30 minute wait. Our inter Island flights Honolulu-Kona, Kona-Kahului and Kahului-Honolulu we didn't have to wait too long in the TSA line. Even though they are domestic flights you still need to have your passport handy as they don't accept other photo ID for non-Americans. The TSA line leaving Honolulu for home was a slightly longer wait but nothing too bad. We did have to walk for ages to get from there to our departure lounge though. We flew Hawaiian for all flights.

Thanks for reading my little blog and I am glad it was useful to you. If you have any other questions I will try to answer them for you. We loved Hawaii so much.

  4. I have enjoyed your adventures very much and your photos have been outstanding. So wonderful of you to share them with us all.

Do you have a complex camera (DSL) or just a point and shoot?

    Thank you!

My camera is a just a point and shoot, a Panasonic Lumix TZ40, I love it and I love taking photos as you can probably tell. We had a fantastic time in Hawaii and we both talk about going back there some day.

  5. Hi, the HoHo all start and finish from Suntec City close to Esplanade MRT stop, there are four routes, red, blue, yellow and brown which cover alternative routes, they vary in length between 40 mins and 1 hour.

If you research your things to do in Singapore you can plan your day accordingly.

We travelled with Singapore Airlines and they were offering a promotion of 50% discount against the normal price of $S39.95 per day showing boarding card which was a good saving.

Trust this assists, anything else you require help with please request.

Thanks so much for this info. We are heading to Singapore next week the day before our cruise and are intending to take the HOHO. You have just made it a lot cheaper for us :D

  6. We did two helicopter flights on our trip last year. On both flights it was just us and we had the doors off. For both we chose companies where we didn't have to share the helicopter with other people and everybody gets a window seat.

In Hilo we did the flight over the Pu'u O'o steam vent and it was amazing. With the doors off you could feel the heat of the lava, this was my favourite of the two flights. The other flight was in Kauai which was also amazing but was just pipped by the Hilo flight.

In my signature is a link to my blog where I wrote about the flights, among other things, including plenty of photos of each flight.

  7. You can do the Atlantis submarine when the ship is at Kona. The office where you check in is right across the road from the Kona pier where the tender boats arrive and depart from. The shuttle boat to the submarine leaves from Kona pier for a short five minute ride to the sub. The ship offers this as a shore excursion but is a lot more expensive than booking it yourself. I have only been on the sub in Kona so don't know about those.

  8. We did two helicopter flights in Hawaii on our trip last May. My favourite was from Hilo over the lava fields and the PuuOO steam vents. This was before the lava started flowing into the ocean again but it was the most amazing flight. We had the doors off and could feel the heat of the lava. We also did a flight on Kauai which also spectacular and my husband's favourite flight, also with the doors off. When we get the chance to do Alaska I expect we will do another helicopter flight there too.

When we were on Maui post cruise we did a snorkel tour to Molokini Crater and Turtle Town though this can also be done while on the cruise.

  9. Just thought I would give this a bit of a nudge.

This time next week I will be on my way to San Francisco where I will be visiting my daughter who is currently living and working there. I've never been there before and have several things all planned and set to go. If anybody has any ideas on things I should do please let me know.

  10. The tour that I took went all around the east end of the island and then up through the middle and back down to Kahului, so I was on the coastal side the whole way. It didn't go to Hana and back, if it did then it probably wouldn't matter what side of the bus you sit.

  11. Wow, your departure pictures are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful trip with us, you did an outstanding job!

Thank you. I love having the window seat because I love looking at the clouds and the land down below and of course I love taking photos of it all. I was amazed at how good the photos of Maui from the air turned out, just gorgeous. It was so, so, so much fun to relive our fantastic holiday by doing this blog. I can't believe it's been almost four months since we returned home.

  12. Oh wow I loved your Lanai post! We hope to take the ferry over when we go in 2 weeks. It was great to see some pictures.

By the way, I leave your blog up on my phone and check every day for the next installment. :)

Thank you for saying that, it brightened my day!

  13. This is one of my favourite ports. The photo with the ABC store - opposite the banyan tree - has the best pub/diner above it - we plan to eat here again in February. Its such a wonderful town. Thank you

I really loved Lahaina too, it had atmosphere and looks gorgeous.

Mongee, your review is outstanding!! Love the Flintstone mobile.

    Thank you so much!
