  1. We have our own car but walking would be great.

Sent from my XT1254 using Forums mobile app

Well, a brand-new breakfast option just opened next to La Quinta! The Boardwalk on the Cocoa Beach Pier started to serve breakfast a few weeks ago! We are going there in the morning and I'll report back! This is a wonderful new option in that area so we are excited about having breakfast on the water.

Grills has long been a breakfast favorite of ours! They do get busy in good weather but if the outside tables are taken there's normally room inside.

  2. Found a shuttle to take 4 adults and a child from port Canaveral to Orlando airport for $90, but still searching for transportation from Orlando airport to a hotel, and then hotel to port during the day before the cruise. Pulled up some rental car places and looks like we could get a rental for much cheaper as any place I'm finding is a good $100 or more for transit from airport to cocoa beach area.

    Concerns are...

1)how far is it once rental car is dropped off for us to get to port, do we need a taxi and additional cost or can we walk?

2)do rental cars have toll fees covered or do we need to pay the tolls ourselves as well as the port entrance fees?

In terms of distance, too far to walk (except from Hertz to Country Inn/Residence Inn) but the rental offices are just minutes from the hotels and port by road. Here is a map to show all the locations. https://www.google.com/maps/@28.424564,-80.8451537,72363m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!6m1!1szH-7o_mJABR0.kguiZnGCjDj0

The toll is $1 + $1 = $2 each way for 2 axles and you can pay in cash. You can see the two toll booths on the map above. That's it for extra costs!

  3. We are flying into Melbourne Airport on Friday evening. Cruise leaves Saturday out of Port Carnaval. What is the best way to get to the port. Stay in a hotel close to airport on Friday night and cab it Saturday or stay closer to port on Friday?

Melbourne Airport is very passenger-friendly so arrangements are super easy! Here is a Youtube video about Melbourne Airport Arrival to Port Canaveral.

Hertz, Avis, Budget, Alamo, National and Enterprise desks are inside near baggage claim and you pick the car just across the street as you step outside. Depending on your travel date, one-way rentals can be very cost-effective as others have stated but rates vary considerably for various reasons.

Shuttle services are best handled by the transport desk near the terminal exit doors. http://melbourneairportexpress.com/ has vans waiting outside and is perhaps your easiest shuttle service choice although there are plenty others. In March they charged $59 for two people in a shared van to the Port area.

I do like idea of staying closer to the Port to get you into a "cruise-mindset" if you will. You can watch the ships depart around 4:30pm and you can see your ship arrive the next morning (views from several hotels). You may also get to meet some of your fellow cruisers the night before who are staying in the same hotel.

Then you take the free or cheap hotel shuttle the next morning to your ship.

  4. Thanks. What is the area of Cocoa Beach like near the Hampton and between Hampton and the pier (eg Safe)? And thanks for the restaurant tip!

The walk along the beach from the Hampton Inn will take about 40 minutes (rough guess for a slower pace) from the Hampton lobby to the Beach and on to the Boardwalk at the pier. During low tide the sand is flat and hard making for easy walking but when the tide is in you have to walk on soft sand and at the beach angle! This can be tough on the knees.

After dark that stretch can be lonely because the buildings are set back behind the dunes. Not unsafe per say, but somewhat isolated and you may see the occasional rough looking types who sleep there until caught.

Here is the view at low tide towards the Pier from the Hampton Inn beach. Hampton is the blue building left.

  5. How is the pool at LaQuinta? Our daughter is 3 and is not a fan of the ocean. Thanks!

La Quinta Beachfront has a very nice (though small) pool with a little bar and seats on the side. It gets plenty of sun until sunset! See pic below!

I did not see a playpool for toddlers. The pool is about 3 feet deep at the steps where your daughter can plash around while you assist her. It gets deep to 5 feet rather fast.

We love the location of La Quinta Beachfront!

  6. Has anyone stayed at this property recently? Considering a one night pre-cruise stay. Looking for a place with a quiet pool and close enough to a nice part of Cocoa Beach proper that allows for a walk to the pier and restaurants. I know it is close to the beach.

Also, any idea if there is a hotel shuttle, free or otherwise, to Port Canaveral?

Hampton Inn uses the well-known Travelynx for their shuttles so no problems on that front.

It is a good distance from the Pier however - just under 1.5 miles along the beach. The closest restaurant is about 0.3 miles away (Brano's - very good), so you have to weigh the "quiet" location versus a busier area closer to the pier. etc.

  7. I have not seen Breakaway over at Terminal B1 (next to Grills) during past visits, or is this nothing new?

Is this an indication the Port Authority are thinking about docking all visiting ships at B1 or B3 when available?

This is great news for visiting guests - At Terminal B they are within walking distance of restaurants, shops, beach (B3 especially) and cheap public transportation.

  8. Fortunately, there are many options to choose from although I am unsure about pet-friendly. Dogs are not allowed on the beaches yet many of the hotels are actually pet-friendly so you should be fine at most.

First, please look at this map for hotel locations: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=zH-7o_mJABR0.kguiZnGCjDj0

Closest to Port and next to the beach: Holiday Inn Club (no membership needed and one of my favorites).

Further down are the hotels near Cocoa Beach Pier. La Quinta is on the beach and also a block of rooms from the Best Western. Days Inn is 2 blocks away and Holiday Inn Express a bit further away and on the wrong side of A1A but still a very easy walk.

A bit further south are the hotels near central Cocoa Beach. The Inn is closest to the beach then 4 points, Comfort Inn, Motel 6 and Wakulla are all just a block or two from the beach. Then you have the Courtyard and Hampton Inn, both just a block away.

Further down, the Doubletree and Hilton are beachfront.

Distance from the Port is not an issue to be concerned about! All these hotels are minutes (between 5 and 25 minutes) by shuttle or taxi from the cruise ships piers!

I thought I added the beach/pool recommendations but here goes:

Because you have kids, for best Pool/Beach combination, I like the Holiday Inn Club, La Quinta Oceanfront, Hilton, Doubletree, Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn Cocoa Beach (more or less in this order).

  9. Looking for a beachfront hotel near Port Canaveral for a few days before our cruise. 2 other families will be joining us for those 2 or 3 days, 1 of the families hoping to get a pet friendly place. All together we'll have 7 kids and 6 adults. Just looking for an easy place w/ food/pool/beach (don't want to have to travel from the hotel if we don't want to).

We'd like to be able to taxi to the Port instead of renting a car.

    tia for any suggestions :)

  10. Just booked a Carnival Valor cruise with DH and my parents (their first time!). I've been looking at the Raddison Resort at the Port and their site has what seems like a really good rate of $112 for a night stay for the four of us in one room. This is for advanced booking and is nonrefundable. Does anyone know if that rate will stay like that or should I jump on that rate now?

Also, anyone ever use the transportation the hotel offers from MCO to the hotel? On their site it says $50 for two and $10 for each additional person. So I'm assuming that would be $70 for all four of us to get to the hotel from the airport. Is this something you book in advance? I was thinking about booking the hotel online and then calling to add the transportation. Also wondering if the transportation to the port the next day is something I'd do in advance or when you check in. Anyone know what the rate is for that?

Last question. I've read some bad reviews about Flamingos Restaurant in the hotel. Is the pizza place or that mom and pop restaurant within walking distance any good?

Any overall impressions of the hotel would be good too. Thanks!

I cannot help with rate predictions but can answers a few of your other questions!

I would book the MCO shuttle in advance because the service is done on demand. The Radisson uses Cocoa Beach Shuttle and they will probably try to group together some guests for the ride and you want to be in one of the first ones who depart after your flight arrival!

The Port shuttles are $6 per person and you can book those on arrival but be aware guests with priority and early cruise embarkation plans will try to get on the very first shuttles - so it is best to book in advance as well if you want to arrive earliest at the ship. They do run the shuttle frequently until all guests have boarded so no big deal if you are not in a rush.

You are within walking distance (right next door or across the street) from:

Zachary's (a Greek flavor that we have come to enjoy lately, especially breakfast. However they are not open every day it seems )

Thai Thai - wonderful Thai/Japannese. Love that place.

Kelseys Pizza - Very good but popular so arrive early

Preacher - one of our new favorites and one of the hottest places to go in Cape Canaveral as of late. Very different and interesting décor and food.

    Subway

We like the outside Flamingo Tiki bar at the Radisson and go there often just to mingle with cruisers and also friends who live nearby. Good music and fun to set the mood before a cruise!

  11. Can anyone recommend Florida's Fresh Grill?

Florida Fresh Grill is a wonderful restaurant! But very popular (even the bar area fills up a few minutes after opening each afternoon at 5pm) so do call ahead to tell them when you plan to arrive.

About Dixie Crossroads - the OP is staying in Cocoa Beach so the question is whether or not to drive all the way over to Titusville for a Dixie X experience? No, in my humble opinion! The restaurants around and near Cocoa Beach are just too good nowadays.

  12. 30 years ago

Dixie X got fresh rock shrimp from Port Canaveral fishing boats

today there are no boats or receiving houses .. you can count Canaveral fishing boats on one hand

The place (Dixi X) survives on their history and gets their 'product' from elsewhere

    Have to agree with Capt.

Last year we lived in Mims for 3 months and tried Dixie X several times each time hoping for better but it failed to impress. Always busy for sentimental reasons I guess but nowadays it is just OK in that area with not too many choices nearby. I simply cannot recommend driving all the way from Cocoa Beach to Titusville for a Dixie X experience.

Our list of happy places around Canaveral/Cocoa Beach continues to grow - from the happy hour bargains and great pizza at Papa Vito's, to Brano's to Euro Kafe to Florida's Fresh Grill to Thai Thai to Varga's and on and on!

  13. Can anybody tell me the what the taxi cost for 2 from Orlando airport to Port Canaveral is? I was told it is a flat fee, just looking to get an idea of what to expect.

    Thanks!

    Matt & Aubry

Matt, flat-rate shuttle service vans and town cars from popular companies average around $120 (+20% tip) for a one-way private trip for 2-3 passengers.

  14. We will cruise out of Baltimore MD and our first stop is Port Canaveral.

This is our first time on this Itinerary (Freeport and Nassau next)

We have done eastern and western Caribbean and are familiar with just getting off the boat and finding local tour operators for a fraction of the cost of booking onboard. ALso allowing us to decide what we want to do without too much planning, and getting up when we want. This is vacation after all ;)

Can we find things to do at Port Canaveral (or the others in the Bahamas if you are familiar) on the fly?

Or does the port area have activities in walking/cab distance?

    Thanks

We think there is a lot to do near the Port - even Disneyworld and other theme parks are just an easy hour away by road!

Please look at this map of Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach for orientation:

    https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zH-7o_mJABR0.kguiZnGCjDj0

    Step 1:

What is your cruise terminal? If 5, 6, or 10 then you need transport. Either a rental car shuttle or a pre-arranged ride. Cocoa Beach Shuttle is a good starting point for pre-arranged pickups. 888-taxi is available and despite some bad press about prices they are popular and efficient.

If 1, 3 or 4 then you have some activities within walking distance:

    1. Jetty Park (FREE) for a beach/suntan. Very scenic area and very nice beach. http://www.jettyparkbeachandcampground.com/

    2. Beach bus stop – For $1.25 one-way, the local beach bus will take you to Cocoa Beach (Shepard Park for Ron Jon area) or within walking distance of the famous Cocoa Beach Pier (use Publix Stop). About 30 minutes to these stops. http://www.ridescat.com/

    3. The Cove at the Port – All the famous restaurants (Millikens, Rusty’s, Fishlips, Grills) http://visitportcanaveral.com/

    4. The Exploration Tower – A bit expensive ($6.50+tax) but interesting info about the port with games for kids and 360 degree view from the 7th floor. http://www.explorationtower.com/

    5. Helicopter and biplane rides - http://www.floridaairtours.com/ the chopper is right there behind terminal 2.

    Step 2:

So you want to explore further afield in private and not using a shore excursion?

    Rental Cars:

Unless you just want a simple single visit somewhere in Cape Canaveral or Cocoa Beach, I think the best option is to rent a car for the day. Start price-shopping with Payless (within walking distance of terminals 3 & 4) but all offer port shuttles. To avoid boring waiting time with kids in tow, I suggest that one adult go early to get the car then come back to pick the family!

Please know some of the popular rental car companies share shuttles and offices. See the map above for locations and pictures of their shuttles for easier identification.

I am working on an 8-hour itinerary around the area for self-drive cruisers! Stay tuned…

    Shuttles:

If you do not want to drive or use the public beach bus, then shuttle/taxi services are available. 888-taxi - http://cab888.com/ has a port contract with hail privileges whereas others have to pay port entry fees ($5 or more depending on vehicle size, I believe) which add to the costs. So while other companies may offer cheaper per mile or metered rates, it is best to compare them with 888-taxi before booking. They will all be busy so it is best if you call ahead.

Here is a list of the shuttles I see most often in the area: Cocoa Beach Shuttle - http://www.cbshuttle.com, Beach Line - http://www.beachlineshuttle.net, Space Port - http://spaceporttransport.com/ , Hoo Ha taxi – (321) 749 3232, etc.

Expect to pay around $20 for two people for a one-way trip to Ron Jon Surf shop for example.

    Kennedy Space Center:

One of the most popular shore excursions. I always see a line of KSC buses waiting on each ship! So you can expect a crowded day at KSC. There are ways to manage your day in order to avoid lines at the top attractions – I am planning to write it up in a separate note.

A private return shuttle to Kennedy Space Center averages between $80 and $120 roundtrip for 2 people (total) plus 20% tip. If you self-drive, the parking costs are $10.

    Beach:

During winter months and if Port Canaveral is the first stop when sailing from NY for example, the beach is what a lot of people want! I totally understand and highly recommend to walk over to Jetty Park. The beach there is wide with some wave action and life guards are on duty. You can rent chairs and umbrellas and some beach toys (beach chair/umbrella rentals for 2 people are about $15 a day). The beach café is pretty good too! http://www.jettyparkbeachandcampground.com/

If you want to go to the beach near restaurants/bars, try the Cocoa Beach Pier area - http://www.cocoabeachpier.com/ or further down near Coconuts on the Beach. Cruise ship shore excursions go to Shepard beach (near Ron Jon) so do not go there if you want to avoid your fellow passengers!

The SCAT public transport is cheap and easy (30 minutes) down to the Pier and Ron Jon areas. There are several areas (and companies) for learning how to surf, paddleboard, etc. I know the kids love the surfing lessons so please consider that but do be aware the water is cold in winter and I recommend you use a surf school that supply wetsuits.

    Activities (Orlando area):

I understand the attraction but it is tough for me to recommend a whirlwind bus or private tour of any of the Orlando theme parks. It is almost impossible to experience the parks in a long day, so a half-day trip is pretty intense! Ride lines will be long, it may be very hot, the transfers take at least an hour each way and it is very expensive for what you can achieve on such a rushed excursion.

It may be best to rent a car and visit just Downtown Disney (a free Disney-like experience but be aware it is mostly restaurants and shops) and perhaps a lesser-known place like Gatorland. I will think more about this and perhaps write a separate note about Orlando options.

Activities (other than Orlando and Kennedy Space Center):

The best activities around Port Canaveral are beach or nature-based but there are very good museums too. Manatees, gators, airboats, learn to surf, kayak, hike, etc. are on offer. Airboats are a lot of noisy fun!

    Pre-arrangements/bookings are crucial.

Disclaimer - I do not endorse any of the companies/establishments listed and I have no relationship (personal or business) with them. My list is just a starting point of different activities so please do your own research! However, we’ve had have positive experiences with many of the listings below and are constantly trying new ones!

    a) Sunward Tours - http://www.sunwardtours.com They can arrange just about any activity

    b) FunDay Tours - https://www.facebook.com/funday.tours Work primarily with pre-formed groups such as shore trips but check them out anyway

    c) Segway Tours - http://spacecoastsegwaytours.com/ will guide you around the port

    d) Airboat rides – There are several but most shore excursions go to Midway - http://www.airboatridesatmidway.com/ or Lone Cabbage - http://www.twisterairboatrides.com/ . To get away from the crowds, try Grasshopper - http://www.airboatecotours.com/ , Old Fashioned Airboat Rides - http://airboatrides.com or Switchgrass - http://switchgrassoutfitters.com

    e) Kayaking to see manatees and wildlife - Adventure Kayak - http://kayakcocoabeach.com/, Fin Expeditions - http://www.finexpeditions.com for Cocoa Beach’s Thousand Islands. Also Calypso - http://calypsokayaking.com at Manatee Cove not far from Kennedy Space Center. Note – from November to March the Manatees prefer warmer water in other areas and may not be seen regularly around Canaveral.

    f) Learn to Surf. Cocoa Beach Surf Company - http://cocoabeachsurf.com/surf_lessons_camp.html or Ron Jon http://www.ronjonsurfschool.com are solid representatives of the surf school companies

    g) Air Force Space and Missile History Center – http://www.afspacemuseum.org/historycenter/ The history of the launch areas around Canaveral. Very informative.

    h) Warbird Museum – http://www.vacwarbirds.net/ If you love aviation then this is the place to go. Lovingly maintained by volunteers (mostly ex-armed forces). It is an amazing museum.

    i) Police Hall of Fame – http://www.aphf.org/museum.html More interesting than most expect. Various exhibits of the history of major crime as well as impressive though very sad memorial.

    j) Astronaut Hall of Fame - https://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/the-experience/us-astronaut-hall-of-fame.aspx is part of the Kennedy Space Center experience but in a different location.

    k) Brevard Zoo and Treetop Trek - https://brevardzoo.org/

    l) Shopping - Dinosaur Store and Museum - http://dinosaurstore.com/ and Ron Jon Surf Shop - http://www.ronjonsurfshop.com/ Fun for kids old and young!

    m) Wildlife Parks - Jungle Adventures – http://www.jungleadventures.com - An old-time Florida animal park. Not fancy but friendly and interesting. Larger than Expected. Shore excursions often combine the Jungle and a Midway Airboat ride in the same package.

    n) Boat rides on the Banana River to see wildlife including manatees (not many around during Nov and Apr). Start with Island Boat Lines - http://www.islandboatlines.com/ and also Wild Side Tours http://wildsidetours.com/

    o) Forever Florida - http://foreverflorida.com a really adventurous safari with swamp buggy rides, ziplines, etc! A bit far unless you have car.

    p) Cocoa Beach Skatepark - http://cocoabeachskatepark.com/ Certainly unusual for cruisers but a seriously fun and safe skatepark for the cool kids in your family if they packed skate boards! Open at 4pm during school days so plan accordingly so they can skate for 2 hours or so before returning to your ship.

    q) Brewery – Florida Beer Company - https://www.facebook.com/FloridaBeerCompany a very good tour and tasting arrangement! Close to the Port.

    r) Sightseeing – Some cruisers prefer more leisurely excursions and most ships offer affordable hourly hop-on, hop-off bus trips to Cocoa Beach and Cocoa Village. Passengers can explore the areas on foot and return to the ship when they want. The beach buses stop between Ron Jon Surf Shop and Shepard Park in Cocoa Beach (for a typical East Coast Florida beach and surf experience). From there they offer constant bus shuttles to the north end of Riverfront Park in Cocoa Village (for a historic downtown experience). You can easily do the same in private using a rental car or taxis/shuttles (watch the costs though). SCAT buses (Route 9 and the 520 connector) will be cheapest but will take much longer.

This is a work in progress – being updated daily as we discover and try new adventures!

  15. We will need a shuttle from MCO to Radisson at the Port, Port Canaveral. According to their web site, Radisson can arrange one for us.

Does anyone know which shuttle company they use or is it Radisson's own shuttle? and how reliable are they?

We are also looking at CocoaBeach Shuttle, seems to be just a bit more $, not one heck of a lot though and might be worth while if they are more reliable than arranging with Radisson.

    Thanks

Radisson has their own Port shuttle buses but I see a lot of Cocoa Beach Shuttle vans at their doorstep!

I have not used Radisson for MCO transfers but my strong suspicion is they use Cocoa Beach Shuttle! I hope someone else here can confirm this?

  16. We are looking at the 1pm flight after getting off the Carnival Sunshine on a Sunday morning. What are the best options for getting to the airport? Rental car or shuttle? There are four of us travelling and the kids will be 7 and 10. I am just concerned about how quick I can get a rental car after disembarking. And also getting to my flight.

If money is not a major concern, then my vote is to book a dependable private shuttle bus (budget about $120 plus tips) who can pick you at the Port and drop you at MRO check-in within 1 hour. Cocoa Beach Shuttles and several others will make this a worry-free choice.

A rental car may be cheaper but you will have more stress in my opinion while dealing with luggage, rental car shuttle and lines at pick-up and drop off.

I have to say, for the record, the one-way car rentals from Port to MRO are mighty efficient and competitively priced on certain days (perhaps when there are not too many ships in port?) Prices tend to vary hugely by date and how you booked (Priceline vs. direct vs. Costco, etc.).

  17. It is $1 cheaper per day than the northern location. Plus, there is a motel 6 right down the road that has a fairly cheap room the night before we cruise. Anyone else had any experience with this location?

Same ownership as Park Port 1 but the operation is different!

$1 cheaper as stated but using the same white Radisson shuttle buses.

It is really much more relaxed and easier to park there because you park on floors 4 and 5 of the parking garage and then you get the shuttle at the hotel check in which is under cover - nice and cool on hot days and you stay dry when it rains. Very different than the (sometimes long) lines in the very hot sun at Park Port 1.

The catch is this - the shuttles do not run as often as Park Port 1 because Park 2 are scheduled per bookings. They plan the shuttles with the Sheraton hotel guests and the ships in port and the self-park bookings. Strictly speaking, there is no timing - they send the shuttles based on the amount of people who parked and/or are leaving the hotel. Not a bad idea at all and seemingly efficient.

You drive up to the Sheraton hotel check-in area. Park and check the vehicle (online prepay preferred) and unload your luggage. There is a manned desk outside to help with everything. Then you park the car, ride the elevator back down and hop on the shuttle.

I suggest you call or visit the check-in area perhaps the day before if you have an early ship boarding plan and you need to time your parking arrival with the earliest shuttles.

I hope things work out for you!

  18. Some captains turn them off in port .Carnival routinely turns theirs off in Port Everglades . RCI also turns the off often in Port Canaveral and Port Everglades.

There are two sites that track AIS signals . The signals are received by volunteers that have bought the AIS receivers.

Great thanks! That explains the cases of the missing ships I often see at the docks!

  19. Does anyone know what's up with the Port Canaveral AIS? I have not been able to see ships in PC for a few weeks.

I also noticed this year it was not accurate even while working.

Several times there were one or two cruise ships in port that did not show! Do the captains turn the transmit devices off? Are the positions for real or based on virtual projections based on itinerary information?

  20. We will be at Grills at 11:30!

    is this still a GO?

and would you like me to bring the Mini? I might even offer a ride . . .

psst, it is an Austin ... not a Morris .... well technically an Austin Morris as in 79 the companies had merged as Austin Morris Group . . . but I digress . . .

We will be there - him in a white Under Armor shirt with short pants and her - well who knows!;)

  21. UPDATE: I talked to the lady at Alamo who told me that as long as we get there early, they should be able to take him back to the hotel. I know they open at 7:00. So we will try to drop it off as soon as possible when they open. And I will have him have some cash for a cab in case it falls apart. What time do you think it starts getting busy with disembarking cruisers wanting cars on a Saturday? 9? or would it be earlier?

Also, in case anyone is interested, I also found out from the Hilton that the cruise port shuttle is $5.00 pp. So for the 3 of us, that's probably comparable to cab fare or maybe less. So I will probably plan on having him come back to the hotel, meet DD and I and get on the shuttle. That is the plan anyway. If things go not as planned, I suppose DD and I could get on the shuttle and meet him at port. Not my top choice, but doable.

    Hi Lisa

Great! It appears you have it all covered.

Since you do not need to rent a car seat, do the automated car pickup online at Alamo so you can skip the counter and head straight for your car upon arrival!

At Alamo in Port Canaveral, your DH will be just fine because guess what? If he somehow cannot get the ride back to the Hilton all he has to do is walk across the road to 888-taxi (321 8688888)! Their depot is right there across from Alamo! Also give him the Hoo Ha number from one of my previous posts.

If he can be at Alamo before 8am things should just be fine and he will be back at the Hilton long before 9am because the hotel is less than 3 miles down the road!

Then you will have plenty of time to relax before boarding the shared port shuttle from the hotel after 11am!
