We had our photos made by several professional photographers on the ship, hoping for a shot we would really like.  Just after we had this shot made near the Bionic Bar, and alarm went off on the ship...

The gangway was on Deck 5 just across the way from the Bionic Bar.  All aboard time tonight was either 7:30pm or 8:30pm, I don't know for sure because both times were in the Cruise Compass.  Either way, there were still people slowly returning to the ship.  We have no idea what happened but as someone came back on the ship and put their items through the x-ray/scanners... an alarm was setoff and a 3-story metal "door" came down and completely closed off the gangway area from the rest of the ship.  We couldn't believe it.  Several of the staff members seemed surprised.  I asked one if she had ever seen this happen before and she said no.  I walked around and took a picture of it because it was so strange...

Of course,  it was also a bit scary.  Eventually, the steel door was raised and we never knew what happened.  We were standing in line for the haunted house when the door was finally raised.  There was a long line for the haunted house all night.  It was located just past the La Patisserie on Deck 4.   I'm glad Royal Caribbean recognized Halloween in such a way and attempted a haunted house but this haunted house took maybe 5 minutes and it was probably entertaining or scary to 10 year olds?  There were adults, many much older than us, in line for the haunted house.   Maybe do something a little different for Halloween on a cruise like this in the future?  The haunted house was supposed to close at 9pm but the line was so long they must have left it open longer.

The smoke from the haunted house triggered the fire alarm which is why the doors came down.

  2. Thank you all so much for your advice. We're going to book the Newark Penn Station Hilton, which looks like the easiest logistically.  It'll certainly be an adventure trading our Florida golf cart for trains and Ubers, but we're looking forward to it!

What is your hotel budget? What are your bed size requirements?  2 queens are hard to come by in a hotel that has good access to NYC.  Could you do 2 doubles?  What exact dates would you be doing this?

Staying at an airport hotel will cost you $13/pp adults and either $3.50 or $9 per child each way by NJ Transit train. Web site says the $5.50 Newark Airport access fee is not charged for children, but it is not specific.  Uber to Newark Penn Station might be better because the fare from there is $5.25/pp adults and $2.45/child 5-11.

We don't necessarily have a budget for the room. Not that we have unlimited funds to spend, but we aren't familiar with what the going rates would be.

We could manage two double beds if we needed to.

Our cruise is from October 24 - November 2.  So we need a room for October 23, and possibly November 2-3 ish.

  4. My family of four are fairly experienced cruisers, but because we live in Florida, we are accustomed to driving to the port on the morning of the cruise and walking right on. We booked a New England/Canada cruise for October 2019 and are trying to figure out the logistics of departing from a non-Florida port.

We are thinking we want to fly into Newark the day before the cruise leaves. That way we have some extra cushion time in case there are flight issues.  We see that there are several nearby hotels that offer shuttles to/from the airport, hotel, and port.  We haven't booked our flights yet, so we could actually fly into whichever airport would be best.

The other part of the puzzle is that none of us have been to NYC before, so we want to take advantage of being so close. We are thinking of spending the first afternoon there, and potentially a day or so after the cruise returns.  Our kids will be 5 and 7 years old and we do not plan on bringing their car seats to have to store on board. What would be the best way to get from the Newark/hotel/port area into the city?  Are there subway stops that will go from there all the way into NYC?

I appreciate any insight you can give!
  5. I've seen a few conflicting things about this topic and wasn't able to get a straight answer when we called Royal Caribbean directly.

It seems like stand up paddle boards can be rented at Nellie's Beach. Is this true?

Can reservations be made ahead of time, or is it walk up only?

Can we let our kids (ages 4 and 5) sit at the front of the paddle board while my husband and I paddle?

  6. We will be going to Ladadee on our Oasis cruise in April 2018. We are trying to figure out an activity to do with our kids, ages 4 and 5. We live 10 minutes from the beach, so we would like to do something else while on vacation. We were hoping to bring them kayaking, but the minimum age is 8 and they don't seem to be flexible with changing the rules. Are there any hiking trails there? Or has anyone had any luck getting an exception to the age rule?
