  1. We will be in Dubrovnik from 0800 to1700 on September 21st....with possible tender.

We would like to walk the walls as early as we can, wander around the old town and then travel to Cavtat for lunch using boat or bus, or a combination.

Is this a realistic plan considering our early departure? Are the buses and boats between Dubrovnik and Cavtat reliable?

Any suggestions or alternative ideas welcome.

The only thing I don't want to miss is walking the walls which I last did as a teenager over 50years ago!!

  2. Much depends on your port time. If you have an early arrival like 7 AM you can't waste the time waiting for the ferry to Sorrento, which doesn't depart until 9 AM.

With an early arrival you can already be in Sorrento before the ferry departs from Naples. With the new metro station across from the cruise port it's even easier to use the train. The downside of the metro to the station is that you get on at the second stop of the Circumvesuviana line, which means no chance of getting a seat. The other option is the #1 tram from the cruise port to the Porta Nolana station, the first one on the line, which increases your odds of getting a seat but there are no guarantees.

Eurocruiser, could you please give details of the new Metro station near the cruise terminal? It's the first I've heard of it. We were planning to use tram no.1 to Porta Nolana & didn't know we had an alternative, apart from walking/taxi.

  3. Although I've looked at some climate charts it's difficult to get an idea of the weather to expect & clothes needed on a 2 week Med cruise mainly around Italy during the last 2 weeks in September.

How hot will it be in port during the day? evenings on our balcony? in the restaurants & bars? and what about sea days? Possibility of rain? etc etc

Should I take a warm jacket or just a light long sleeved top? A light waterproof & an umbrella would seem sensible, but other than that I'm all at sea!!

  4. Thank you for your helpful replies.

We've received the booklet with our names and tour details for our cruise on September 16th, but no labels in the back. We booked an Early Saver fare in May and were allocated our cabin last week.

  5. There is a Basko on Piazza Sopranis Raffaele and there is an Ekom supermarket on the port near to the Museo del mare, on Molo Ponte Morosini. I've never been to that Coop but it could be quite a bit of a walk.

    Thank you Flygirl25.

I think we'll go to the Ekom and see the port area at the same time. Do you know if we'll be able to buy local wine there? Part of our cruise plan is to sample new wines as we go!

  6. Thank you for your helpful replies...I didn't expect any.

I don't think I've thought this one through. We have a busy day of DIY sightseeing as it's our first visit, which unfortunately doesn't leave time for a restaurant meal, so where/how I thought I was going to eat the mozzarella after tracking some down I don't know!

  7. Hi, we went to Lucca from Livorno this past Tuesday. We got off the Emerald Princess soon after docking and it was easy to get a taxi to the train station.

On returning to Livorno train station, we took bus 1 to Piazza Grande, and walked the short distance to Piazza Municipale.

There were taxis there, and also the cruise ship shuttle back to the ship, which we took. The round trip shuttle was 5 euros but there was no one collecting the fee for the trip back.

Emerald Princess also had a round trip to the station for 12 euros but there is only one timed run to and from, and it was later than we wanted.

    That sounds ideal.

Could you give me an idea of the time you disembarked and also when you returned to Livorno station?

  8. Can I buy train tickets for Regional trains in advance?

I was wondering if I could buy Livorno/Lucca tickets the day before in Genoa Principe Station, as it doesn't look too far from the Stazione Marrittima, Then I might avoid possible ticket queues at Livorno Centrale.

  9. The bus is the way to go, you don't want to deal with tram/train crowds first thing in the morning or scam artists. We took the bus back in Oct, was only about 5 of us from our ship on board. We got the tickets from the T shop near the tram stop and then walked back across the street and down toward the bus which is lined up in a big lot with other buses. Just make sure the bus will stop at pompei scavi. Yeah the pic above is exactly where the bus will be. It's a nice ride once you get on the freeway, not so much on the cobbles. The pompei stop is right when the bus exits the freeway and a few min walk to the main entrance up a hill.

There was only 1 front door and I don't recall it being wheelchair accessible. Do you need a lift to move the entire person/chair or just to store the chair? How is that going to work for you at pompei?

How far is the Sita Pompeii Scavi bus stop from the Pompeii Scavi station?

If it's clear we plan to do a Vesuvius climb trip which apparently starts next to the train station and then visit the Pompeii ruins.

  10. We are going on Oceana from Genoa in sept and have an early flight out of Manchester. How far is it into Genoa to a supermarket ? What time do we sail ? Thanks

We'd like to find a supermarket in Genoa to stock up on bits and pieces before we sail too.

It looks as if there's a big COOP store by the ferry terminal. Has anyone tried this? It looks as if it's easily walkable from the ship.
