  1. If its just you and your husband take an Uber. $35.00 or so from FLL to Downtown Miami. Unless you are arriving in the morning rush hour. 7am-9:30am the ride should be around 45-mins. Much quicker and easy than a shuttle. Don't take a taxi though. That would be $90+.

I would suggest head to Downtown and not stay in Lauderdale. Lauderdale is great, but why not experience Miami. Lots of great options for things to do in the evening.

And yes, I was going to suggest look at flights to FLL & MIA and the other NYC airports. MIA/FLL-NYC is one of the busiest routes in the U.S. I think #2 or #3. There are tons of options. I prefer JetBlue given they charge the least and you get the most. No ridiculous basic economy and all that nonsense. You pay for what you get. JetBlue also has the most legroom and best entertainment options.

I can’t speak to JetBlue as I am a Delta loyalist but I definitely agree with coming to Miami, especially if you are only talking about one night. From your hotel, it is an easy walk to Bayside which granted is a tourist spot but has restaurants and an easy walk over the Brickell bridge to the new Brickell City Center that has excellent restaurants, shopping & movie theater. Also, you are just a short Uber ride to Coconut Grove.

If possible, I would give myself 2 days in Miami.

  2. OMG!! You are right on the button!! I can get to FLL for $408 for the both of us!! This is one of the reasons I love this forum....the information you get from everyone is PRICELESS. Gonna go ahead and fly from Newark to FLL.

How long of a shuttle ride is it from FLL to Miami? Our overnite hotel stay is at the Hyatt Regency Miami. should we anticipate minutes, or hours??

Thanks again for the tip @fishywood !!!

Travel time would depend on time of day and if you are in a private car or shared service like SuperShuttle but unless something unusual happens you are not talking hours. I’m guessing that the Hyatt you are staying at is the downtown location. The drive the FLL is all highway and the Hyatt is located at the downtown exit.

  3. I was wondering if anyone knows what is a "reasonable" fare to pay for a 3-hour non-stop flight for me & hubby, from Newark, NJ to Miami,FL. Right now I'm getting flights that vary from $700 for both of us, to $900 for both of us. This seems a bit steep to me.

We are sailing MSC Seaside in May. Would I have better luck waiting a few more weeks/months to get a better price??:confused:

High fares do not surprise me out of Newark. Last year I took a Fall Colors cruise that departed from Bayonne. It was cheaper for me to fly from Miami into LGA and take a car service to the hotel I was staying at for the night before the cruise than to fly into Newark.

I would certainly look into a round trip tickets from LGA. The car service that I used was Blacklane.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Thanks for the speedy replies, everyone. Consensus rules! We went with the mini :).

Although you have already made your choice, I'm with everyone else. I have never been on Regal but get a Jr. Suite all the time on Royal whether I'm cruising with someone of by myself.

On Royal it's not just a bathtub that you get, you also get a walk in closet.

On NCL, I wouldn't recommend spending the extra for their mini suites. Some of their balcony rooms are actually larger.

  5. Hi all,

I'd appreciate any advice/reassurance because right now I'm pretty bummed. Our 10th anniversary is next week and we're booked on the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam eastern European cruise departing Fort Lauderdale. We originally were supposed to go to San Juan, St. Thomas, Grand Turk and Half Moon Cay.

Obviously, the hurricanes change that but we didn't cancel because we've been through hurricanes personally and wanted to support the islands. Then the itinerary totally changed and we were to go to St. Croix, Cap Cana and Nassau, as well as Half Moon Cay. We decided to roll with it - St. Croix seemed like an equal swap and Cap Cana interesting. Well, now we're not going to St. Croix, we're going to Amber Cove - another Carnival island.

I understand that in comparison to what the hurricane-ravaged islands are going through this is minor but this is also the only trip my husband and I have taken together in 10 years and a splurge for us. Had we wanted to visit the Bahamas and two Carnival islands, we could have done so for a third of the price. I know options are limited but I can't help being really disappointed.

Can a more experienced cruiser weigh in on these ports and maybe help me get excited again. Right now I just want to cry.

    Hi,

While I can’t comment to the ports or even the ship you are going on, I agree with many of the comments you have already received. The ports don’t matter. The fact that you are together, celebrating a very special time, is what is important.

Enjoy your time together and all the amenities that I am sure are on the ship. Let go of your preconceived thoughts and you will have a great time.

  6. how about a free wine with D+?

Typically you get 1 free wine and then a buy one/get one. I think they vary what they give. At Chops I received a free glass of wine but it wasn't on the list of onboard savings. You get 3 free drinks each night during cocktail hour (5 - 8:30) at pretty much any of the bars but not all brands are included.

  7. Hello everyone. We will be doing a B2B in Dec. During the first leg we will reach D+ like on the 3rd or 4th day of our 12 nighter. Will they honor/recognize this for our second leg,8 night? Any input of course is greatly appreciated . Thank you. Watson50 (Keith)

Generally no. You will actually be Diamond+ after that cruise. However, it doesn't hurt to push the issue. Remember "the squeaky wheel gets the grease".

  8. On our recent (July) Baltic cruise on Vision, we received a HUGE fruit and cheese platter that could have served 6-8 people easily so I think it varies depending on itinerary and ship. :) Oh, and we also got a plate with the little sweet things on another day.

Yes, I agree that it depends on the ship & itinerary.

Upon my arrival in my cabin, I found 6 bottles of water and a plate of cookies. A couple of nights later, I also received a huge fruit & cheese platter and I'm the only one in the cabin. Yesterday (I'm still on my cruise) I received a plate of sweets.

I have over a week to go on this cruise. I wonder what else I will get.

  9. On the ship I often don't use a bag.. If I do I have a small cross body bag that I use; also use it ashore. At night I have a small silver wristlet I use, since the cross body bag is very casual looking.

I've had this cross body bag for many years and use it only for traveling because it is discontinued and no other bag fits me so comfortably or is just the right size. It could be used as a 'fanny pack', but I don't.

I use a small crossbody on the ship. It's just large enough to carry my phone & my small camera. Off the ship I also use a crossbody but larger as I want one that I can carry an umbrella, a bottle of water and my larger camera if it is raining, along with anything else I might need while touring. I tried the backpack route but it was a pain as every time I wanted something, I had to take it off.

The photos are what I used on the ship. The black will hold my small camera and I found it on Amazon. The bone holds basically my phone, ID, & some cash. I actually book several of that one in different colors on the ship during one of their many sales.

I don't want to have to hold on to something or have anything hanging from my wrists so I always use a crossbody.

  10. hi,

this is my 1st cruise. I normally carry a big hand bag like a satchel. But I don't want to be lugging a big purse on board.

I have fanny packs but I guess it's not the trend now.

Can the ladies advice me on what size purse to carry on board and on port days ?

    Thank you in advance.

    Good morning,

By now you have had many great suggestions on a purse/bag for onboard and off.

I am a big advocate of the crossbody bags. In fact, that is the only type that I take no matter what kind of trip I am on. While on the ship, I carry a very small purse that will hold my phone in a mophie case, my seapass card, some cash and a small piece of identification. If you happen to misplace your seapass card, you will be asked for ID in order to get a new one (same goes for hotels). At night, I am mostly in black so I carry a slightly larger crossbody Tumi, nylon, purse that holds all of the above, as well as a small camera (iphones are fine for taking genera pictures but I take pictures during shows and iphone cameras just can't do the job). The strap is adjustable so it can go from crossbody to shoulder bag and it packs very easily. Off the ship, once again I am with a crossbody and I have several that I use depending on the time of year. I also have a Tumi that is similar to the size of the bag that Birdylady posted a link for. It is large enough to hold everything I need and a bottle of water. My other favorite bags are by MZ Wallace. Many of their bags come with several different straps; crossbody which are adjustable, shoulder & sachel handles. I often use them for my purses at home.

No matter what you carry, make sure it is something that you like. If all else fails, there is always time to shop on the ship.

  11. How does one go about getting a special dispensation to attend a "handicapped" or indoor seated muster drill?

The closer it gets to our sail away date the more I am stressing about the muster drill. On my last cruise on the Liberty last July out of Galveston it was a nightmarish torture. For one thing I am massively claustrophobic. I can't go in elevators, if I absolutely have to I feel like I am going to die and completely panic.

When I attended my last muster drill they crammed us all like sardines into an outside deck somewhere but there was something blocking the view to the outside, I'm not sure if it was a lifeboat or what, I was getting in such a panic at being stuffed in rows and more and more people in and around me so that we were all smushed in and touching (nasty sweaty lot of us because the heat was unbearable as there wasn't a bit of air moving....as it was July in Texas)

I can't help but start to feel panicky about being all crammed in there again. (I know....irrational fear....but it is what it is)

Can I request the indoor seated muster drill? Is panic attack a good enough reason? I don't even get anything out of the drill because I am too panicky feeling to be paying any attention. Also if we ever did have to abandon ship there is no way in heck I'd ever get in one of those closed in life boats. Id rather take my chances with swimming. (I'm a strong swimmer and can easily float along in my life jacket)

How does one request this? Any suggestions? I had been planning to hide out in my room and skip it but then I have been reading about they are scanning people in now and I don't want to get kicked off the ship for skipping. (And not fair to the poor people waiting for the darn thing to start)

Btw we will be on the Valor (June sailing) which if I had to guess the muster drill will be similar to Liberty.

As suggested, I would contact your cruise company now. Don't wait until your in panic mode which you appear to be close to being in now.

I mainly cruise with Royal Caribbean and many of their drills now have the muster station in assorted lounges and restaurants. As for thinking you could just swim or float along side a boat, you must be dreaming. I don't think you would want to deal with possibly high waves or sharks.

    Good luck.

  12. I wanted to know if any recent cruisers on the Freedom know if the ship stayed on EST or changed to island time? I recently learned that St. Kitts, St. Maarten, etc do not follow Daylight Savings Time and before booking tours I want to verify which time we'll follow.

    Thanks!

Are you talking about booking yours outside of the cruise tours? If you are booking cruise tours, it really shouldn't matter.
