Ship: Silhouette
Cabin #: 9286
Deck #: 9
Class: 1B
Area: Middle of the Hump
Bed near: Bath
Quiet?: Very quiet, no noise from elevators or people in the hallway
Balcony view: Unobstructed, straight down to the water (except for about a foot of deck space jutting out on Deck 5), 100% forward and aft
Balcony size: Normal
Wind a problem?: No
Soot a problem?: N/A
Problems/comments: This was the perfect room and would book it again in a heartbeat.

My suggestion is to never get a 2D. Because of the large boat obstruction, when you sit you see nothing but boat.
d4m, like you I would not book a 2D cabin because we love having a good view.
On the other hand, for the lower price, it works for some people. My sister-in-law, for instance, just wants fresh air and to know what time of the day it is when she wakes up from a nap.

I'll be on Silhouette in a week and three days and getting very excited. I can't get enough of these reviews, so thank you for yours. We too have a flight home sometime close after 11am, so I appreciate the info on disembarkation.
By the way, looking forward to seeing your pictures when you get a chance to post them!

You are good people. Thanks for thinking of everyone and posting!

Do you happen to have a picture looking down from one of the cabins on the hump? We have a hump cabin (2B) on Continental Deck and are wondering about the view. I understand there are no lifeboats blocking the view on Eclipse but what about the public area on deck 5? Is that deeper than the balconies above? From pictures it looks as if it is - will that block the view a lot?
Hi Piggeldy,
Check out "travelingirl"s review of the silhouette (new years, eastern caribbean), and she has a good picture looking down from her hump (normal size balcony) stateroom. Yes, the open deck 5 will block a couple feet of the view straight down.

ETA: link to page of review with picture, hopefully it works!

I loved being on the hump with an unrestricted view from bow to stern.
We're going on the Silhouette next month, and we luckily chose a room on the hump for this exact reason. I'd rather have that 180 x 360 view than a lot of other amenities we were looking at.
Can you tell me if you were ever able to catch the ship docking while watching on your balcony, and if so, how were the views below? DH and I love that kind of stuff, watching the guys on the pier with those massive lines and such, and are hoping that we might be able to catch some good views from our balcony (if we dock on that side of course) rather than leaving the room to go to the open deck on 5 to watch.

I have also brought items back to the cabin from the Oceanview, but found that by the time I got to the cabin, half of it was gone.
Ha ha, cute!

from looking at these videos it looks like you will not be able to look down into the waters. only looking straight out
Thanks Serene, the videos helped convince DH to rebook an unobstructed verandah stateroom. Just in time, too, we got the last one on the bump for our sailing :D

you are not going to be hanging in either others cabin. you can always meet up for dinner etc. If you are going to be more comfortable in a different category-- then I would be moving
Right, we won't actually be in each others' cabins, but we meet up in the hallway before excursions, dinner, shows, etc, and don't want to be on the opposite side of the ship, or on a different deck and get unintentionally "left out" of things. In addition, upgrading will cost more (plus the cruise in general increased in price since we booked), as well as increase the travel insurance fees.
What I'd mostly like to know is how much space there is on the balcony to see between the lifeboats. We enjoy looking down to watch the ship dock. All those obstructed balcony views are just a little different, and I know that this one has at least some view between lifeboats, but just looking for a little more info (is it just a few inches and I have to lean way over towards my neighbor's balcony, for instance) from someone who may have actually been in this stateroom, or 6201, on any Solstice Class.

We are part of a group and didn't realize the main planners had booked us in the lowest level of verandah staterooms available. We originally booked 6186, which I deduced has the lifeboat all the way across.
I learned there are some of this class stateroom that have a gap in between the lifeboats, but those are booked, so I changed rooms to 6202, which I've read has a partial view between lifeboats.
Does anyone know for sure if this is a decent room? We thought about upgrading one class, but that causes a whole host of other problems, including proximity to the rest of our group.

Who was the Chief Engineer on the ship? Was Erik still the Captain?

Roulette was always my lucky game because that's where I met my husband and he doesn't even gamble! He was there to keep an eye on his brother who was playing blackjack the next table over from the roulette table (his brother can be a little mouthy when he's drinking).
I say "was always my lucky game" because before cruising, my roulette winnings would end up paying for my trip and more every time I went to Vegas. Other than meeting my husband, however, I'm not so lucky on the cruise ships. I have taken to giving my husband the chips and him sitting at the table and betting MY numbers, and he comes out $100 richer in half an hour. I know it doesn't mean anything, it's only superstition, but it makes me feel better that I'M not the one putting the money on the line, and if he does win, I'M still the one who gets the $100 ;)

The one thing I bring on a cruise that I don't take on a "normal" vacation is a steamer wand to get rid of wrinkles in clothes, especially on my dresses and nicer outfits. My steamer was such a hit on our last cruise that the rest of our group (in neighboring staterooms) even asked to use it.

I LOVE the lady with the British accent who announces the deck that your elevator has reached (on RCI ships anyway, which are the only kind I've been on). Although... we avoid the elevator as much as possible - need to get some exercise when we're eating all that FOOD!:p
We also look forward to finding the Cruise Compass for the next day upon returning to our stateroom every evening. We always talk about it at dinner with our companions and how excited we are to read the events for the next day and then make our plan of attack before bed.

For upcoming cruisers who like karaoke, please note, you can talk with the activities staff and suggest time and location changes. In our case, the karaoke was always scheduled during our late seating dinner assignment (8:30pm). We never miss dinner, as we always have a big group and sometimes that is the only time we are all together. One of our group asked if the staff could schedule the karaoke earlier or later to accomodate us and others who ate during late seating, and on the final night, they did hold it at 7pm, and changed the location to Quasar. It was a ball!
