  1. Since CCL has imposed the rule I think we can figure out which side of the equation their bean counters settled on :).
This rule has been in place since Carnival has been offering package. In fact, when they Cheers didn't exist, they sold an AI drinks package to groups 25 cabins or more and everybody in those 25 cabins that was 21 had to buy the package. The rules just carried over to the cheers.

Still, if you consider that a huge majority of the people that buy the package don't think 15 will be enough. So with them, they buy a package for both either way. That was the complaint when this program started. The question still remains, would the amount of single purchases balance out to the ones that didn't buy two. Carnival is notorious for launching pilot programs in these situations. But still, the end of the day, 15 drinks and the 15% in tips is still paid for. Seems to me, the bar staff are the real winners because Carnival is buying alcohol wholesale, they aren't really, NOT selling $10 drinks, they are keeping probably less than $10 per day in actual inventory cost by you not drinking your allotment.

  2. That's the answer to those that say CCL would make just as much money if they allowed only one person to buy the package. Obviously they wouldn't. NCL's package costs $80 per day for those that buy it and is usually offered as a "free" choice when booking the cruise. With the fares other cruise line's charge they don't need to worry as much about bar sales for making a profit. I can sail with CCL and buy the Cheers package for the two of us and still pay less than I would on either NCL or RCCL (or even better, not buy the Cheers package and save even more).

I don't think we can guess whether they are losing money or not by not offering that package to a single or not. Its very subjective because we truly will never know that data. We can only speculate. But again, when you compare to other cruise lines, their business models haven't changed that much based on the demographic they cater to. So it has to been something there to push them that direction. And we know that your cruise fare hardly covers the cost of food and fuel...etc.

We know alcohol and casino is where they actually make their profits. This is truly not a question that we can answer but I can see Carnival doing a pilot program eventually, they always do just to see if they can make money in other way. It will eventually happen, but who knows if it would ever go fleetwide.

  3. Let's put it this way- DW and I each drink 7 drinks a day. We each have to buy the Cheers package and as a result pay $49.95 per day each plus tip. CCL changes the rules and allows only one of us to buy the package, so we do and each of us drinks our 7 drinks a day, paying $49.95 plus tip for one person. In neither case do we consume 15 drinks a day but obviously CCL makes more in the first example

I don't think anyone is denying this? We get it. But somehow, other cruise lines are still making a great profit without this ristriction. It's possible that the statistics are are different than what we think. I don't think NCL would be selling this package to individuals if they weren't making profit and not having a problem with sharing.

  4. And here is another thought. I wonder how many people that purchase the Cheers package would have actually drank 15 or more per day if they hadn't purchased the package. If not, Carnival is encouraging people to drink more to get their moneys worth. So over consumption of alcohol really isn't a factor. Unless they seen that limiting to 15 in itself is a deterrent to keep people from getting smashed. Even if a person drinks 15 drinks for the day, Carnival still comes out wayyyyy ahead. How much, we will never know.

  5. There are others on this forum who don't think that 15 drinks are enough so Carnival is damned either way. Poor Fun Ship Freddy! He probably would drink himself to death if there wasn't that friggin' 15 max.

15 is probably double what I would need. And honestly, I don't know that the program works for me. I drink normally 4 per day, so logically I shouldn't even buy it. Again, that is a loss to them because if I buy the package I am committed to paying those drinks per day. The amount of profit Carnival makes on mixed drinks is astronomical. But this is how Carnival covers the overhead. And the cruise lines keep that data very secretive. I don't blame Carnival for doing this, I just wonder if its some lost cash there.

  6. If Carnival DOES move away from the rule that everyone in the same cabin must purchase it, you can bet the price per day will rise significantly.

Possibly not. The price is gonna have to be in the same ballpark or it won't sell. People would just go back to pay as you go if they're gonna have to pay $600-$800 per person in drinks. At that rate the whole program starts to not even make sense.

  7. What if he book his own cabin and purchased cheers... Then he add the other passengers? I they will likely be moved to another cabin but maybe he could get away without them realizing not everyone have cheers.

I don't know if that would work. Just a crazy thought.

That would work however, after re-booking and paying the single solo supplement the OP would've been better off paying as you guy in all likelihood. Or either just paying all in for the other 2 to have the package. It would just depend on the length of the cruise and room rates.

    .

Edit: I read you what you said again, I'm not sure if that would work or not. It could only possibly work on a fresh booking.

  8. They lost 400.00 from me on my last cruise and will lose 400.00 from me on the next cruise. I did most of my drinking in port and will do the same in October.

Agreed. I think they ALL offer drink packages for the sole purpose of making money and while I have a limited Carnival experience, I really dont think Carnivals demographic differs all that much than the other cruiseline I have frequented in the past :)

They've lost at least $2000 from me since starting the Cheers program. Realistically, I think the majority of the people that purchase this program are gonna look at the 15 drink limit and wonder if that's going to be enough  . So they're gonna go ahead and get two packages so they can both be comfortably numb all day.

  9. Well, the cruise lines that do not require this are obviously making money because most if not all went that direction. It is also likely Carnival is losing money. They have already lost at least $800 from two people on this thread buy not allowing it. Now, the remaining question is how many people would only buy one package and attempt to share, in such case they would lose some money. Personally, I think limiting the amount of drinks under this package would assist in this. I'm not holding my breath waiting on this to happen with Carnival, they're always the very last to even consider such changes.

  10. Hello all,

Apologies if this has been covered, I did a search and could not find the answer.

I know policy is that everyone in the stateroom of legal drinking age MUST purchase the Cheers drink package. Is there ANY way around that without booking my own room? The other two folks I'm traveling with do not drink whatsoever therefore they have no interest in a drink package. I can definitely drink my $$ worth with the drink package and would hate to have to buy drinks one at a time because of this policy forcing everyone in the room to have to purchase the package. Thanks for any advice and help!

No, considering the way you are booked with two other people in the cabin. I'm in the same boat as my wife doesn't drink at all. I have my fingers crossed that Carnival will soon get in line with other cruise lines and move away from this rule. But it has to make financial sense for them to consider it. I just wish we had an option for a package, I would even consider a lower drink limit to keep the sharing possibilities low, considering this is the real reason they don't offer it, its about the money. Even pregnant females are required to purchase the package.

  11. Does Uber operate out of Orange County airport? First time flying in and wasn't sure if there are any restrictions.

Also, any guess what Uber ride would cost from Orange County airport to LB cruise terminal?

Yes you can from SNA. If you download the Uber app, it allows you to input the two addresses and it lets you know the specific prices for each vehicle. Keep in mind, during morning and afternoon rush hour it can cost significantly more.

  12. Hello, first time posting. My H and I are taking our girls on the 7 night Mexican Rivera cruise in July 2017. Our girls will be 14, 14, 12 and almost 4 when we sail. We have cruised from Jacksonville to the Bahamas twice before with the kids, but this will be a first for our 3 year old, who also has a moderate allergy to dairy. It's getting expensive quick between the cruise fare, airline tickets from seattle to LAX, transportation to and from the airport/cruise terminal and excursions. Few questions:

    1) any cheaper options for transportation other the Carnival pre/post cruise transfers? We're looking at $360 for the 6 of us (round trip)

    2) we are planning on the Pirate ship/beach day in Puerto Vallarta, but what should we do that's cheap in Cabo and Mazetlan?

    3) how do we communicate with the wait staff about our little one's allergy? It's not so severe that contamination will be an issue, and we plan to bring lots of snacks for the trip.

Any other tips for this week long cruise with our brood would be appreciated! Thanks!

Uber would be significantly cheaper. That's our plan for our April cruise.

  13. I too got off the Glory today. I agree the Regulators were great! I enjoyed them a couple of times at the casino bar, but most of all they were the highlight of the NYE entertainment.

Did you happen to notice the internet packages?
