  1. You and I have the same feet.. lol! I love Mephisto and naot! Also a German brand called ara for dressier shoes. For Europe I swear by my Mephisto hiking boots. Very stable. I can walk and stand for hours and not feel tired. Support is key. ( as you probably know.) cushy does not always mean support. However I just discovered echo walking Sandles and would recommend them. Very sturdy.

  2. We were married in st Thomas 27 years ago. Just a heads up it is very very hot there. My husband was going to wear a tux but when we went to rent one there it was so hot we bought him a silk shirt and slacks instead. He was still warm.. tropical weddings are great fun but unless you are getting married in the ship with air con suggest you think a bit more casual for the groom. Otherwise you will melt!

  3. I doubt it. I was on the Maasdam years ago leaving Boston for Montreal. We were caught in the middle of a low off Halifax and a tropical storm to the south of us. The captain warned us upon leaving Bar Harbor that it was going to be rough - it was. Rough all the way to Halifax then back out into the seas to North Sydney and onto Charlottetown. People in Charlottetown couldn't believe we were out in that storm. We had gale force 9 winds and 47 foot seas!!! I happen to like rough seas. It was a trip to remember:). If it gets rough go up to the Front Desk and ask for some motion sickness pills - non-dowsy.

I am always amazed at people who like rough seas.. I wish that I did!

  4. jeans throughout and now evenings in most of the ship jeans and heavens knows what else as Americans in particular love to push the envelope of down market dress and general behavior.

Quite honestly I found found the dress standards in Europe and the Uk as down market as you describe that of Americans. Over Ten year ago I went to Rules in London, a fine upmarket very proper British restaurant and many diners looked like they had stepped inside from a long day of house errands. T shirts and jeans abounded. (We were dressed up.) Last year we went to Bentleys. same thing.

  5. Many happy memories of the Prisendam when it was the Royal Viking Sun. My sons first cruise was on that ship in 1991- my mom and I were in it when her during the 1996 world cruise when she hit the reef near Sharm el Sheik Egypt. We also then did a Baltic and Mediterranean cruise! We loved the size and thought the staff were outstanding.

  6. Fred Grande who played Gopher was a very interesting man. After “ the Love Boat”he went on to serve 4 terms in the US House of Representatives. I met him when he was President of Goodwill Industries international. We were told not to bring up The Love Boat. However, he brought it up himself and remembered it fondly. Recently he was on the Mindy Project ... his son was a writer for the show.

  7. I hate the “.new rule” of no hose. If it’s summer and one is young and tan and wearing sandles fine. But everyone else looks ill kept to me. Most women even with leg makeup .. ( yuck) look cheap without hose. Not a fan of this rule. Agree with the Queen on this one.

  8. Thank you, RJ2002!

Great that you'll be following along, too, Sheila! I remember the moment at the St. Tropez cafe that I moved my chair a few inches so that you could scoot by me and claim the outdoor table next to Ginny and me. Weren't those crepes amazing? I noted that you were on the Explorer fall 2017 Atlantic Crossing as well and hope that you had a wonderful time.

I got some Voyager staffing info tonight that made the DW and me quite happy and that I'd like to share:

Captain: Felice Patruno. We sailed with Captain Felice on our first Regent cruise in April, 2010, Monte Carlo-Venice. It was a cruise we will never forget because 1.) We got to celebrate our 30th anniversary in Rome, the Eternal City, and 2.) We couldn't get home for seven days following our debarkation! Can you guess why? That's right--that ash cloud from the Iceland volcano that blanketed much of Europe! Regent pretty much won us over for life for how well the company took care of us for the six extra nights we spent in Padua and Mestre waiting for the skies to clear enough for us to be able to fly home (don't feel badly for us--we had a great time exploring Padua and every nook and cranny of Venice). This will be our first cruise with Captain Felice since 2012.

General Manager: Massimo Arzani. We sailed with the former Oceania GM on his first Regent cruise, in October of 2013, Montreal-Miami, as well as three times since (most recently, the Explorer maiden TA in 2016). I've found Massimo to be warm and affable, and a pleasure to interact with. It will be great to see his big smile again.

Cruise Director: Ray Solaire. Ray was a guest artist (puppet show) on our Regent "ash cloud" cruise in 2010, and he has been our CD on three cruises since. Our fondest memory of him is how sweetly he interacted with our special-needs daughter Shauna on our 2013 Montreal-Miami cruise. He drew with her one day on the Pool Deck, danced with her at the Beatles bash, and even did a mini-interview with her and mom and dad for his TV show. It was another side of Ray, who I've come to view in the tradition of the classic performing CDs of the early days of the Royal Viking Line. (We've sailed with six Regent CDs over the years, and I appreciate how each has his/her own approach to the job and special skill set.)

By the way, I believe Ray will be celebrating a milestone event this year: 50 years at sea! Confirmation and details to follow once I'm onboard. . . .

    Rich

Was Ray Solaire ever on the Royal Viking Queen? Our first cruise was through Greece and I think he was our cruise director in September 1992. He was so fun. We loved the Royal Viking Line. We were on the World cruise when they hit the reef in the straits of Tiran. They handled things so beautifully.

  9. No, there is not. A duty free shop is one where you can purchase something just before you LEAVE a country without paying import duty because you obviously will not be using it in that country.

The duty free concept does not apply because you are leaving the airport, it applies because you are leaving the country.

Actually at London Heathrow there is a duty free shop as you leave baggage claim in terminal 5 for international flights. Of course only for international flyers.

  10. I have no horse in this race but do have a close friend that did the Amazon on Oceania in the Owners Suite and hated it. They did a very similar one on HAL and loved it. They have also sworn to avoid Oceania after that cruise.

As to the comment about you won't take the time to defend Oceania, I don't think the OP was asking you to.

We did the amazon and Brazil on regent and it was our least favorite trip. On the water. The boat was fine. The ports meh!
