Not sure what response OP wanted to this?  Last time I flew, we took off on time and landed early.  So there's that.  All the posts about this one time this one thing happened and delated us.  Yep.  Happens.  More often that not we get to where we're going when we're supposed to.  And none of it will influence what happens with the OP.

  3. I've read your other answers and agree with all of them, however, assuming your are talking about your upcoming cruise on Explorer, I have never sailed out of that port. Are you a member of your roll call, check with them, I'll bet you have experienced cruisers there. I never board by the suggested time, I'm a "Get on the ship ASAP kind of person" I'd find out when check in starts and be there!

    Makes sense, but it's one of those we'll get there when we get there things. Our flight gets in at 9 and we'll get our bags and head to port. Just curious how long a wait until everything starts we might be looking at.

    From what I've read, it's not a bad idea to avoid the first sailing of any new ship from any company as well as the first sailing or two out of dry dock. It doesn't always have to do with new staff issues.

  5. Only bummer is using it at shows or in large groups of people. The glowing screen can be really irritating to those around you when you're in a darker situation, and in groups of people, they tend to get held up to shoot over other people's head, thus blocking the view of others behind you.

  6. Note that the questions asks about ALL cruises. The answer to that question is NO.

     

     

    Since it is not necessary to answer the question I am not going to get into the pros and cons of cruising with or without a passport.

    No needs, there should still be two more pages coming of people that are answering a question that's been answered or repeating opinions.

    There seems to be agreement an two key elements.....

     

     

    1) The container ship was on autopilot and the bridge was unmanned.

     

     

    2) The Fitz crew didn't "see" the container ship approaching.

     

     

    On the first point (just my observation, I'm not an expert) - It seems the Navy and maritime worlds haven't kept up with technological advances in collision avoidance. It seems the ACX Crystal's autopilot knows enough to sound an alarm if it detects a collision course, but not enough to avoid the collision. I'm guessing the alarm is useless if there's no one on the bridge to hear it? As for collision avoidance...... look at how far self-driving cars have come in the last five years and compare it to ship autopilot systems. Why have these systems never progressed beyond primitive "maintain heading & speed"?

     

     

    On the second point - How is it possible (yes I know it is, it happened, but how?) that something the size of a container ship can maintain a steady collision course with a USN ship without it being aware of the threat and taking evasive action? This goes back to my original post which posited "The only plausible explanation is that the bridge crew on both ships weren't paying attention for an extended period of time." Can there be any other explanation?

     

    Would the Navy ship not have some type of an audible alarm like airplanes when the radar senses something on a track that will bring it within a set distance?

  8. Not that I'm concerned about cruising, but those of you posting "you can die from anything" or "most people die from...." are totally missing the point. They are pointing out that here is a place where crimes can happen that can cost you your life and there really is no investigation or follow-up. How is that the same as, gee and people die from crossing the street? If you hit someone crossing the street, the police will come and determine who was at fault..blah blah blah. If they didn't come, or if they just talked to the closest neighbors two days after the accident and didn't take any pictures, then it wouldn't matter how many people it happened to, it would be a legitimate topic of a story. The cruise industry doesn't necessarily deserve people blindly coming to its defense just because they enjoy cruising.

  9. SeaTac airport does have minivan taxi's but don't know how well six would fit with luggage. They also have the shuttle vans which run $18 per person and kids ride free. My wife and I will be taking a shuttle van from airport to pier 66 next month. Both kids are free so we will pay $36.00

    Do you need to reserve the shuttles? Or are they down at ground transportation waiting?

  10. Guys I've never done this, but based on what I've been reading over the years I have a clarifying question. Internet packages are x number of minutes you pay for. To do wifi calling you need to be connected to the wifi and from what I understand with most cruise lines, you're using minutes any time you're connected. So to make a call no biggie, connect, call disconnect when done. But receiving calls has been brought up a few times. You would also have to be connected to the wifi at all times to receive a call that was placed from home correct? And you would quickly use up your minutes being connected no?
