  1. A further update to the CDS baggage service between the cruise port terminal and YVR. When we used this service at the end of our cruise in May 2018 we walked up, checked our baggage in (I took photos as per previous advice) and paid the fee by card. We filled in a form with our flight details and contact details (we were not flying until around 21:00 so were glad to leave our bags and have a whole day in Van). We were told to pick up the bags in the International terminal.

However, on arrival at YVR international terminal, we were met by a young female employee, maybe 18-20 with an “I don’t give a sh*t” attitude and told our bags were at the domestic terminal. When I challenged this as the ticket we had clearly said international, she said she’d had all bags transferred there earlier with no explanation why and why she hadn’t contacted customers to advise them. I asked for my bags to be brought to me, and she just told me to go to the domestic terminal. I asked to speak to a manager and was told no, there was no one else here (it looked like she was shutting up shop so I did wonder afterwards if anyone turned up to find the place shut with no idea where their bags were!).

So off we walked to the far reaches of the domestic terminal, adding about 25-30 minutes. A bit annoying, certainly frustrating, since for them it’s a licence to print money for $10CAD per bag.

I am sorry you had a bad experience. I would encourage you to complain to the airline and copy YVR. Bad employees are everywhere.

  2. I'm looking for some suggestions for black sand beaches we can visit by taking an uber or taxi that is close to the dock in any of these ports: Maui, Honolulu, Kona, or Hilo. I'd rather not rent a car, or have to travel by car more than about 20-25 minutes.

We will be going in December this year, so I'm not even sure if the beaches are warm enough to be laying out on them, but that's preferable. Anyone know?

I've looked on trip advisor for nice beaches to visit but a lot of them say tourists are unwelcomed by locals. I'd like to try to avoid this issue too.

About us: unmarried but committed couple, without children, 38-41, low to moderate activity, prefer uncrowded beach.

Spent many weeks on the big island. Please keep in mind I have not been there in a couple of years. From where the tender drops you off to black sands beach is about an hour. I would suggest 2 step beach about half the distance. If you are lucky you can swim with the dolphins.

  3. We did 28 days last year to Sydney I walked on with case and bought another case in SAN Francisco. I paid the corkage. I got better wine cheaper. The wine steward took our wine and served it to us. We just booked a 38 day trip plan to bring our our wine on board and pay corkage. I buy luggage carts for $30 on EBay and leave it on board when we leave.

  4. One new feature the buses and train do accept Visa and Master Card for single trips. If I was to travel to Granville Island from Canada Place I would take the Canada Line train (the one that goes to the airport ) get off at Olympic Village (3rd stop I think) and walk 10 minutes west and you will be on the island. Make sure you walk north from the satiation until you hit False Creek. Turn left or west and walk along the sea wall. Very easy. If you get lost ask anyone for directions. Being born in Vancouver I always take out of town guests there. It our favourite spot in town ant time of the year.

  5. I would recommend that you take your scuba coarse at home. I have been at a lot of places. Third world countries don’t put your personal safety first. Diving is a dangerous sport. If you are well trained you should be fine. By the way I have over 1,000 dives. I could tell you a story how I almost lost my led due to an infection I got from a contaminated wet suit in Hawaii. Good luck

  6. As I recall shopping is a couple of blocks to the left. We really enjoyed a cab tour very reasonable. It was an open VW dune buggy. Cabbie spoke perfect English. We enjoyed Matzatlin. We did not go to the major hotel beach area. It was a considerable distance away.
