  1. I can think of several reasons to bring your own food on board

    - unusual dietary problems

    - fussy child or toddler

    - my first cruise, I brought a box of Splenda because I wasn't sure the ship would have it and I live on it

    - I am leaning towards bringing a box of granola bars on our Alaska cruise, as we are doing some long excursions and I don't know what the timing of a meal or the availability of snacks will be, and I don't want to waste any of our time trying to not be cranky because I'm hungry. I would have been happy to simply bring along a disposable or two of favorites from the buffet, but I have gathered from other posts that may not be allowed even in the Alaska (i.e., still U.S.) ports.

So snark really isn't appropriate or helpful.

Just an FYI, after you figure out your excursions, many of the parks will not let you bring any food in because of bear safety. Even if sealed.

  2. I blame this on my nephew.

I was on the Getaway with him last feb and he would eat like a pound of the lox at breakfast every morning.

I'm sure when he turns 21 NCL Will do away with the UBP.

Now I'm going to have to go down to savor and breakfast will take an hour.

This made me laugh! I know how he feels. I had lox every morning. Luxury!

  3. Seward is one of our favorite small towns. Go to Exit Glacier ( while it is still around). Take a sled run. If you are there during July 4, be sure to witness the crazy that is the Mountain Marathon. We saw the salmon run there also, just off the road. We ran into some problem getting taxis so we had to call local tour places and hire them.

  4. Here were a couple of great tips we received.

    1. Bring an empty refillable water bottle. Bottled water is super expensive, bad for the environment...etc. We just iced up and kept that going.

    2. We opted out of the soft drink package, for both health and cost. We brought individual crystal light packages.

3.Bingo and slots are really tempting money pits. I'd rather spend my money on excursions. There are so many fun free programs on board that is where we spent our time.

    4. Skip the extra charge dining and explore the different inclusive dining rooms. There truly is something for everything.

  5. BTW, there is ALWAYS edible things. More than edible. We loved the late night menu in the buffet. We find that the ports are where you try more unusual or local cuisine, that is also where you can save some $. Ask the locals where to eat. We only booked one excursion off the cruise. We booked others with private or local companies for a lot less money.
