    While we were still Plus we weren't over the moon about Gigi's because we think Slice will deliver good pizza without the wait.  We had little interest in paying the cover for the Salty Dog Gastropub or for paying for Ocean Terrace.  We felt like we could rely on the buffet and the pool-side offerings for anything outside MDR.  We got Plus for the drinks, WiFi, and gratuity.  Once the changes were announced for casual dining, moving to Premier was a no-brainer for us.

     

    We anticipate a MUCH LESS CROWDED Gigi's.  We can enjoy Ocean Terrace and the Salty Dog without any concerns about it not being worth the cover charge.  We are crossing our fingers that OceanNow will provide included access to Ocean Terrace and Salty Dog menus.

     

    Overall, we feel that upgrading to Premier will provide two things: 1) more dining options to avoid waits, crowds, and improve quality of service; and 2) an true shot at an all-inclusive feeling.  This is where we see the value.

     

    We know this isn't for everyone.  A reminder/tip to others though: Premier is perhaps THE WAY to travel with teens.  The parents, passengers 1 and 2 are premier, providing WiFi options for the rest of their traveling party.  This only requires a cheaper soda package and gratuities to put a minor at "Plus" level.  They can eat at the buffet while you get away for casual dining elsewhere.

Relatively cheap way to try out the ships (Miracle and Ruby), service, and gauge the real price. Both ships were nice with good service, good food and good drinks. Entertainment was also fine. Princess was the better deal overall because the Plus package comped drinks and gratuities.  Even though the upfront price was more. 
     

    side note: if you’re a wine connoisseur, Princess is the winner.  If you prefer craft beer, Carnival is better. Cocktails: they’ll both take great care of you.

    Same here. The Plus package, even at $60/day/pax is a great deal. $15 of that is for gratuities you have to pay anyway. And vacation is so much more enjoyable when you don’t have to worry about every monetary transaction. Looking forward to the Starlink internet.

    Covid Post Test taken this morning:  Negative

    Slept:  12 hours

    LAX:  A horrible mess at 11 PM.  Thank goodness I have a great driver who was waiting for me 2 miles away/30 minutes to get to me.

    Weather report:  Hot, sunny, dry.

     

    Travel Day.  Arrived via Princess Transfer at Quebec Airport by 10 AM.  I was able to check in and drop off my luggage.  Agent was great and placed me on a StandBy wait list.  YQB is a small regional airport with limited food venues and gates.  Short story, I did not make the standby at 3 PM.  Got on my 5:40 PM flight to Montreal.  If I were to do this again, I would definitely take the transfer bus to Montreal for 3 hours.  25 minutes in the air.

     

    Air Canada:  Cattle cow shuttle like Southwest.  Not sure I would fly with them again.  Not that I would have much choice.  Return to YQB in October will be on Delta.  The plane/equipment is just okay.  The support staff/ground crew is wonderful.

     

    Montreal Airport:  Thank you to those that gave me so much advice.  I had a wheelchair request.  I "purchased" a seat ticket (14C).  And I was out the door as soon as I could.  Didn't wait to be called for my wheelchair.  There was an agent who had my name on a piece of paper.  Told me to go out to the terminal and wait for him.  Less than 60 minutes to get from here to there (57 minutes to be exact).

     

    Kosta arrived to usher me to Gate 83 from Gate 11.  I was reassured, all along the way, that I would make my flight.  I'm about to panic.  Whizzed through the airport.  Signed on to YUL wifi so I could upload my Customs Form.  Dumped water bottle enroute.  Global Entry card/passport/boarding pass in hand.  All the while Kosta calling out..."coming through, coming through, coming through."  Cut in line for TSA (precheck).  Had a minute for a bathroom stop (important ... but way too my information for all of you).  Final Boarding already called and repeated.  Get to the jet way and there are still a few passengers in front of me...and a few more boarded after me.  WHEW. 

     

    Got settled in.  The middle seat remained empty.  Wonderful window seat passenger who I did let know that I tested for Covid 11 days ago.  She was okay with me.  She had also missed her connection but was told that this flight had about 27 empty seats.  The rest of the flight was uneventful, but I was hungry.  Missing all the meals on the ship.  

     

    Moral of story:  Be as NICE as you can be.  It will only aid you in getting through the day.  There was a crotchety/curmudgeon old man who was not nice to anyone.  When he got to YUL, he walked himself off, took a waiting wheelchair, and sat himself down.  Then barked loudly that he wanted an "express" transfer to the Airline Lounge for a flight that was still hours away.  I got taken before him since I was at risk of missing my connection.

     

    Once on the plane and the doors closed, I could feel the adrenaline and anxiety lower.  I knew that LAX would be my next obstacle, but I was on my way home. 

     

    Overview:  With all that transpired on this voyage, I am happy to report that I had a great time.  Taking a few days to decompress before preparing for my next adventures.  There is still a lot of paper work I need to complete.  For now, I am comfortably at home and survived this experience.  Please stay tuned as I complete the rest of my comments and hopefully add some Patters.

     

    Mahalo Nui Loa for all those that took up the slack and added to this thread.  Heartfelt appreciation to all that were routing for me from the side lines.  

     

     

    Glad you survived. I agree, always be nice. In a world where you can be anything, be kind.  Thanks for keeping us informed. We’re booked for a September Canada New England, round trip Brooklyn. And we’re coming from the west coast so I feel your pain. Sorry you had a bad experience with Air Canada. They were my go to airline for many flights across the pacific and their business class is fantastic and relatively cheap.

    In the Palm dining room, the line for 'with reservations' usually stretched up the stairs to the deck 7, sometimes to the photo area.  Usually 20+ minute waits.  The cause: everyone with reservations was assigned a new table each night and had to be escorted to the table.  The 'without reservation' line was short and quick.  My solution, request the same table each night and arrive 15 minutes before the room opened. 

     

    What a mess.  Formal nights were much worse.  Why not use the same table for reservations for the same time every night?  This is how it worked on the Emerald the last 3 times.

    That’s how they do it on the Ruby. They assign you a table and waiter the first night. After that, you get right in.

    Don’t book the Hop on Hop Off Bus! The lines were long, the waits were long and you spent more time loading and unloading passengers. 

    We got on for 2 stops and quickly jumped  off not to return.

    Just walk around, easy walk from the ship.

    HOHOs tend to be more hop off than hop on. We’ve had long waits to get a trolley with open seats in Balboa Park (San Diego) and Stanley Park (Vancouver). Too bad because those are both fabulous places to see.

    Kind of sorta.  My problem with the Medallions is that there is no trail.  When you go to Guest Services, it's your word versus the electronic record.  With the tickets there's a way to reconcile all the transactions.  I do appreciate that Guest Services is usually on the guest's side when removing unauthorized charges.  The Shops at Princess has switched to a new POS where it actually produces a printed transaction receipt instead of the hand written tickets.  I guess Princess was/is having problems with disputed charges at the Shops.

    A word of caution about those medallions.  We were on the Regal from June 25 - July 7, apparently, all someone has to do to get free drinks is to tell the waiter a cabin number and it gets charged to whoever is in that cabin!  When we got home I saw our credit card statement and knew it was too high.  Someone had charged drinks and bar charges and our cabin got the bill for them.  Princess says it will take 21 days to be resolved, but be advised, it could happen to you too.  A relative of ours ordered a ginger ale and the waiter simply asked "what cabin number?"  Hopefully this keeps someone else from getting charged for drinks they never ordered.

    What does this have to do with medallions? Medallions actually make it harder to lie because your photo and cabin number show up on the POS screen. 

  9. I’ve been on CC for years and have noticed a change in the reviews. I think the pandemic turned a lot of people into “Karen’s” by leaving them with too much idle times on their hands. Any perceived slight and someone must be blamed. Cruise lines are an irresistibly big target.  Before COVID, there were some bad reviews, some for good reason and others out of sanctimonious self righteousness. Now, I agree that reviews overall, and especially the Top Ten forum, have gotten savage. 
     

    We’ve cruised five times since cruising resumed and other than a few misfires on our first sailing, things have been fine for us.

    On my last 3 cruises things seem to be pretty much back to pre covid days. The ships have been fully staffed.  Cabin stewards doing twice a day serice efficiently. All dining rooms and all areas of the buffets open. Food in the mdr back with the strange substitutions gone. Good variety in buffet.  Entertainment plentiful with visiting acts being of good quality. Far fewer issues with ship board charges error.The medallion  App having far fewer problems.

     

     These cruises have been on Royal class ships.

     

    My cruises on Grand class ships were earlier in the restart when both staffing and occupancy were limited, so I cannot comment on how they are doing.

     

    Certainly there are some permanent changes and there have been a few hiccups on some ships such as the recent electrical problem on the Grand.

     

    But in general from what I have seen Princess is getting very close to what we expected pre covid. Certainly the number of complaint posts here on CC seem to have dropped considerably over the past few months.

     

    How have your experiences on recent cruises been?

    We were on the Royal in April and Ruby the previous September. Everything seemed to be back to pre-covid normality. Food, drinks, entertainment and cabin service were first rate. The Royal cruise was spring break and they were (allegedly) letting kids sail free if they bunked on their parents cabin. The Royal strains a bit with 4000 pax.

    I have been in ports on the West Coast that limit the number of bars the ship can open while docked, but never a complete prohibition.

I can't help but notice that the vast majority of posters on here do not book the general population cabins. Will it feel like half of the ship is off limits to me?

     

    We sailed on Solstice just before the pandemic in a veranda room. Best cruise ever. Nothing felt second class. Celebrity included a generous amount of OBC and drinks/gratuities/Wi-Fi so it was a first class experience all around.

    I must admit I have never considered using the name of my deck, I have always just used the initial letter. Perhaps I am in a minority.    

    I usually say the name because in a noisy room, B, C, D, E and G sound too much alike.

Never a wait. I tried to figure out why it was so seamless and never could, and this was on the Allure running full.

    We had the same experience on Royal Caribbean in 2017.

    That's human nature, of course. We're more inclined to share when we're unhappy, than when we're satisfied. But if all I knew about cruising is what I read here, why would I ever go on one??!!??

     

    So I thought I'd try something different: what's better? That's right, what about cruising has improved over time? Because there's lots. There really is.

     

    I'll go first: coffee!  On our first couple cruises, the coffee was simply dreadful. It came from some sort of concentrate made by people who, I think, didn't really like coffee. Then they added coffee bars for an upcharge, so you had to pay extra for decent coffee. This was a regular topic here 25 years ago. Trust me! Today, the coffee is fine. Not spectacular, but decent, whether room service, dining room, or buffet. 

     

    Now its your turn. What do you think has gotten better about Princess specifically,  or cruising in general?

    The Princess Plus package is a big improvement. If you can score some OBC in addition, you’ve got an all inclusive experience. 
     

    Also, the flexibility of the MDR scheduling is much improved. In the old days, they assigned you a table with strangers at one of two available times. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

    Onboard we met a first time Princess couple who are Celebrity cruise regulars and after our experience on this cruise we committed to May cruise on Celebrity. I will post that review once we return.

    So why was this bad cruise bad?

    1) This ship looks and feels old. Our balcony & cabin furniture were all beaten up in L256. The room smelled very musty and just needed to be refreshed.

    2) Dinner waiting times were a joke. If you had a 6pm in the main dining room you stood in a line of 30 people for a minimum of 20 minutes. Here is the kicker if you didnt have reservations you could go to the 

    line on the right and be seated immediately? Why make reservations??? 
    3) The medallion app is a joke. It says you can order a drink and have it delivered anywhere in the ship. No not true! We tried it at the spa outdoor pool, we tried it on deck 7 walking area, we tried it on the putting green we tried it in club fusion. It doesnt work and not only that but it self cancels???

    4) Do not get a massage on a Princess cruise. Not only are they overpriced but the masseuse spent the entire 75 minutes trying to upsell my wife on every salon service? She paid for a relaxing massage not a sales pitch. Sorry Princess but I am sharing this scheme with everyone all the time!

    5) Absolutely terrible steak quality in the Crown Grill not only did I hate my steak but the couple next to me said it was bad then the table across from me also hated their steaks? What is with the quality? I loved going to the Crown Grill in the past no more.

    6) Our toliet water twice kept running? Nothing stuck in the toliet but some kind of water pressure problem. No apology no acknowledgment nothing just fixed cleaned and left. Not the Princess I am used too.

    7) No deck party anymore? It would have been perfect considering the weather and the fact a crowd outdoors is safer when it comes to Covid or Noro than indoors. Instead they called it a Love Boat gold white  piazza party which consisted of live music but nothing else that ran for 40 minutes but nothing happened other than some ballroom cruise group who just danced. Didnt see anyone in gold or white?? Yawn.

    So you may be reading this and saying no

    problem for me and that is fine but for a 17 time Princess cruiser this was a disappointment. Yes we will go on another Princess cruise in the future but definitely a different ship. For now Celebrity and MSC will get our business for our next 2 cruises. If Princess wants us back they need to step it up if not we just move on. I filled out the survey and would welcome a conversation but that doesnt seem to happen.

    I wish all of you fantastic cruises  this year and beyond.

  20. We sailed the Carnival Miracle out of SF last May. The demographics were similar to Royal Caribbean. Younger, more diverse crowd than most other lines. Lots of activities especially on the pool deck.  Good bar scene for mixed drinks and craft beer. Hit or miss on wine quality but you can bring on one bottle per adult. Food was solid in the MDR and buffet. Excellent service. Sea day brunch was a treat, don’t miss it. Guy’s burgers and fries were good and the taco joint was decent. Casino was hopping. Pizza Pirate made to order pizza was good, too. The seafood corner that you pay extra for in the buffet is best avoided. The balcony room was spacious.
