In addition to the estimated 80,000 cruise ship crew on ships in or near the US, there are the 1.6 million merchant mariners currently on ships. These mariners represent about 100,000 crew changes per month, all year long, and just like the cruise ship crews, they are basically stuck on their ships for the indefinite future.  Many ports around the world will not allow crew changes, many countries will not allow flights to/from the crews' home countries, and in the US, now cruise ship crew need to be on charter aircraft paid for by the cruise line to get permission to land crew for repatriation.  While the shutdown of the cruise industry will have a profound effect on tourism in many places, an extended shutdown of crew changes on the 54,000 merchant ships around the world will stifle the 80% of the world's trade that travels by sea, as the onboard crew reach their statutory work limit (11 months), and ships stop due to lack of crew.

My husband is one of those merchant mariners stuck on a ship right now.  Hes usually on a 4 week rotation but has been gone for 7+ at the moment with another week + to go as long as all goes well. He was supposed to be home the 25th of March.  He was taking the rig (drill ship) from W. Africa to Trinidad but by the time they got to Trini they have shut the borders down.   Him and his crew have been basically in quarantine since they left  and no one on board was sick. The issue is the reliefs getting to them.  They are taking a slow boat from LA to Trini.  They are taking 2 weeks to get there to do the mandatory 2 weeks that Trinindad is demanding (dont blame them at all!!)  to make sure that no one is sick.  The rigs in the gulf are doing 100 percent crew change every 4 weeks at this point instead of the staggered.   When he goes back he will have to take the 2 week slow boat down and hope that  on one gets ill on the way.  Hope this is over soon but i dont see how it will be.  A shore side job sure looks nice right now.

  2. Florida declared a state of emergency a few days ago.  They do it so they can get funds to help.

"The Governor declares a State of Emergency when he believes a disaster has occurred or may be imminent that is severe enough to require state aid to supplement local resources in preventing or alleviating damages, loss, hardship or suffering. This declaration authorizes the governor to speed state agency assistance to communities in need. It enables him to make resources immediately available to rescue, evacuate, shelter, provide essential commodities like heating fuel and food."

First off, I own enough shares to get OBC. I wouldn't advise buying it solely for the OBC. You have to do your research and be comfortable with what you are buying and the price you are buying at.

Apple stock was super cheap on Friday. It was up $25 per share today. So, a 100 share investment in Apple on Friday returned $2,500 if sold today, or the equivalent of 25 - $100 onboard credits on NCL.

Its all about perspective.  Super cheap to me is not 260.00 a share (friday) I did buy 4 shares though.

    Im buying NCLH today.

  4. Looks like one of our stops with Celebrity has been changed to Samana.  Havent been able to find much info. I was hoping people that have been there could give me some pointers?

Apparently we tender there.  Has anyone been yet? Things to do?  How did you find tour guides?

  5. My husband and I will be on the same cruise! We live on the west coast of Florida.  My husband is supposed to get home tomorrow (his job has him out of the country for a month and then home a month) Big storm headed our way tomorrow so im crossing my fingers he makes it ok.  He flies into ATL from Madrid  so if the worst case he can drive home from there. ( 8 hour drive)   This was kind of a last minute decision for us to go.  Cant wait to get on the ship.

Yes, there is a bridge data recorder (helm and engine commands, heading, speed, etc) and a voice recorder.  Typically, the data would not be retrieved for an incident like this, which is not considered to be a "major marine incident" (typically damages over $20k).  The voice recorder is what caught Schettino asking the engineers to confirm that the Concordia was flooding 3 compartments, and saying that if it was only two, then things were okay, but if it was three compartments, the ship was sinking, and this was hours before he decided to have the passengers report to muster stations.

This incident will be investigated internally, and bridge management practices and procedures adjusted accordingly.  It really is a minor incident.

MMA grad?  What year?  My husband graduated in 1998. Engine.

I'm trying to do a search within the Celebrity forums (looking for MDR seating chart for Infinity) and regardless of how I word it, I'm getting all kinds of stuff with other cruiselines (I did put Celebrity in caps in my search).  I'm also getting seating plans for planes and different types of chairs! I used to be able to do searches without many problems, but now it seems impossible.  Am I doing something wrong?  Your help is much appreciated.

Its not a very good search function.  I wish we could search within specific topics.  I don't want answers from Carnival when im searching for something specific to Celebrity.  Quotes don't work either, trying to search for key words together.

I was having trouble with this section also.  I did all phone numbers with a dash not all run together and it worked. Thank goodness!

Seems like the issue is with the phone numbers then.  I took out the 1 in front but they were still all run together and it worked.  I wish it would have alerted me to what was wrong so i could fix it.
