  1. I used to buy lots of swimsuits from LandsEnd, but the past few years, I've found their sizing has been inconsistent and I've felt the quality has gone down. I used to LOVE their faille fabric suits - had probably 10 sets of tops/bottoms that I had purchased over the years. They discontinued the fabric a few years ago and although I tried ordering their new fabrics/different styles - just didn't work for me.

I did find some suit separates by accident at Target. The brand is "Aqua Green" and they've been great for me. Although I was specifically looking for black bottoms. I have 3 of their different styles, and I've been matching up with tops that I owned previously or even tops from Old Navy/Gap etc Not sure if they offer the boy short style, but they're worth a look IMO. Easy returns if you have a Target nearby.

I've been wearing them in pools, hot tubs, natural bodies of water for a few years now and they're wearing really well for me. I wash them them in cold water and line drying with no problems.

  2. I"m in my mid 40's...

I use a face wash - depending on my mood - Clarins, Lancome or La Mer. I wash my face in the morning, and at night. That's it. I don't use any makeup removers.

I don't like to wear a lot of makeup, but I do like to try new things/different things/brands. On a daily basis I use a bit of powder on my undereye area to brighten it (Lancome Dual Finish Powder). A little mascara (Cover Girl Super Sizer Mascara) and I always fill in my eyebrows a bit (Bare Minerals "Frame and Define"). I don't wear lipstick, but I wear lipgloss frequently (Urban Decay Naked Lipgloss "Liar" and Tom Ford "Sahara Pink" are my current favs).

Sometimes I'll wear a tinted moisturizer. I've tried a TON over the years. Right now I'm using Givency "Teint Couture Blurring Foundation Balm Broad Specturm 15".

I like a cream blush sometimes - I like ELF Aqua Beauty Blushes, NARS Liquid or "The Multiple" Stick Blush or La Mer "Lip and Cheek Glow".

I also lucked out with good genes, so I don't use any treatment type moisturizers or serums. I'm a bad candidate too, because I hate the feeling of anything on my face for sleeping. Sometimes in the wintertime, if I feel a little dry in the morning, I'll use La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream.

I agree that drinking water regularily/daily, and staying active is important.

    Just what works for me...

  3. I'm an oddball and tend to like scents that folks have either never heard of, or don't like. :):):)

I tend to be attracted to crisp, fresh scents over warm/flowery scents.

I love a lot of the Aqua Allegoria scents by Guerlain. They introduce a few new scents each year. My current favs are Bergamote Calabria and Limon Verde

I also like a lot of the Atelier scents...some are available at Sephora. Current favs on this line are Bergamote Soleil and Pomelo Paradis.

  4. Who cares what anyone else thinks!

If you are comfortable putting on some makeup before/during/before the end of your flight - do it.

I wear what I normally wear on these types of flights (tinted moisturizer, blush, lipgloss, mascara, fill in my eyebrows).

I would normally wash my face at night at home (in a hotel, on a cruise etc), but on a flight like this, I avoid the lavatory as much as I can, and I don't like make up remover wipes - so I just go to sleep. In the morning, I touch up with my products, and I'm good to go! I don't have an extensive make up or skincare routine - so it's easy for me. Everyone is different obviously, but this is just what works for me...

  5. No, I don't keep them polished. I was getting acrylics for awhile. My nails changed after that. I have been thinking about starting acrylics again. My nails never look finished now. They also snag and split often which is why they are always short. I may try vitamin D. It can't hurt.

Wearing the acrylics may have damaged them - is that damage permanent? Hard to say...

I would definitely mention it next time you see your GP - weak/splitting nails can be a sign of some diseases/disorders.

  6. I have a few different pairs of packable/foldable travel ballet flats. Just depends on the person obviously, but I like a more dressy style (as opposed to a sporty style).

I've seen and know people that like the Tieks..don't have any yet myself, but I love all the colors they come in!

    Ones I have...

I also have a pair I got at Talbot's...over 10 years ago, not sure if they make them anymore. But they were great.

I also have several pairs of the Ferragamo ballet flat in their travel/foldable style...and they are super comfy too. They always are available in black and then every once in awhile they'll offer different patterns, patent etc

  7. What would be 'too cold'?

We did the Viking Danube Cruise in November and the weather was lovely. We did have some colder days (high 30's/low 40's) but most of our days were in the 50's. We didn't pack a lot of extra clothing for the cold - we just watched the weather before we cruised. We didn't find it to be cold. We come from the midwest...so 50's is practically bikini weather when it shows up in April. :)

  8. Does anyone have tips on where to go in Basel or where to find a nice cheese fondue meal before ship departs that night?

Not sure about fondue...but you could definitely find raclette in Basel!

The trams are really easy to use in Basel and can take you all over both sides of the city. Take a walk on the path along the rhine (you can take a boat over to the other side if you so desire "river taxi"). Basel has a lovely art museum, so if you're into art, that might be something to do. You can also walk around the plaza where the rathaus is located - lots of little shops on the cobbled streets.

  9. I only buy 100% cotton tees...they don't pill at all for me. They can be hard to find these days, unfortunately.

I don't dry any of my clothing in the dryer - I might throw items in for a few minutes on low to de-wrinkle, but then I take everything out and put it on a hanger. I don't have a problem with items being wrinkled/crispy etc Just what works for me. :)

  10. I get a lot of mine from HauteLook.com (plus Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack), Talbots and BaubleBar. Sometimes I'll see something at one site/store and then just search for it online for a less expensive version. Or perhaps I want a certain style, but I'd like to have it in 100% sterling silver, so I'll search in the opposite fashion. I tend to like to use major retailers, so returns are easy.

I haven't had good luck with items from Etsy - no doubt they have some REALLY cute things. A few times now I've purchased jewelry items, and they were really SO cheaply made, broke or discolored quickly...and they weren't inexpensive. So I don't purchase jewelry from Etsy anymore. I also find Etsy's 'review' system to be very misleading/deceptive for customers.

  11. It definitely depends on the person...and what is comfortable to one and not to another varies so wildly.

We cruised late November last year (not a Christmas Cruise, but we were able to enjoy the Christmas Market in Budapest). I brought silk long underwear (top/bottom), a cashmere knit hat, and the gloves I use for running here at home and I was perfectly fine and comfortable. I would check the weather in the morning and dress accordingly. A scarf is definitely helpful, and most fold up to next to nothing for packing. I brought a thin (but warm) cashmere scarf (love the cashmere infinity scarves from Restoration Hardware).

For me, I'd rather have a thin waterproof jacket and layer clothing underneath that, than a big puffy 'warm' coat with minimal layers underneath. Just my preference. My jacket is from North Face and it is so old...they don't even make it anymore. But it works great for me. If I start off with a long sleeve tee and a thin sweater underneath, and I get warm, I can just remove the sweater.

My husband always carries his backpack and I'll put my hat, gloves and any other items I am not currently wearing in his backpack.

    Enjoy your trip!

  12. Going on the Millennium from Vancouver to Tokyo in September, would white pants be out of place (I know the rule no white after Labor Day). Have always been on Caribbean cruse and did not feel uncomfortable, just not sure about this cruise as the weather will not be tropical.

I agree that the 'rule' about no white clothing except between Memorial Day and Labor Day has gone by the wayside. I definitely think you can do white pants, pairing them with the darker accessories and clothing items. I personally wear, and really like the look of white pants with charcoal gray, black or brown tops in the fall/wintertime.

  13. Other brands I like are Natori and Chantelle. They are a bit pricey full price but I can regularly find them at a great discount at Nordstrom Rack.

I agree about Natori and Chantelle...I wear those brands almost exclusively. They can be pricey but I think they're worth it. They wear beautifully, last a long time, don't get wonky when you wash them etc I buy mine at Nordstrom during the half yearly sale and sometimes pick them up Nordstrom Rack or when HauteLook features them.

Everyone is different, but I like the "Aeria" (34DD) and "Rive Gauche" (34DD) by Chantelle, and "Feathers" (34DDD) and "Custom Coverage" (34DD) by Natori

  14. What about Converse or Superga? I know some folks don't like them due to lack of support, but I love them. They look nicer, IMHO, than thick/bulky athletic shoes. I'm a person that only wears athletic shoes at the gym, or if I'm hiking or something, but that's me. Everyone is different, obviously.

Converse has a style called "Shoreline" where they are slip on style, but have laces. They're pretty cute, and I have a bunch of colors that I've picked up over the years (white, natural, dark gray, light gray, navy blue, light blue, pink etc). They come out with new fabrics each year (sometimes different styles of laces, trim) - the classic colors (white, natural, black, gray, navy etc) are available all the time. You can get them from a lot of different places...Amazon, Zappos, Kohls, Nordstrom etc I tend to order (at least the first time I'm trying something) from places that have free shipping/free returns, or at least a local store where I can go, to make a return.

I picked up most of my pairs from Kohls, and would get fantastic deals on them w/coupons + site promotions. The past year or so, Kohls added some limitations to some of their coupons on certain brands, unfortunately.

Unlike the Converse All Star style, the shoreline style are not unisex sizing, so you order the size you wear in women's shoes. I actually bought quite a few pairs in "youth/child" sizes...they're cheaper and they're exactly the same. I wear a 6.5 or 7 in women's shoes and I buy the Converse shorelines in either a women's size 7 or a youth/child size 4.

I also like the Superga Classic Cotu sneakers...I picked up a pair over 10 years ago in Italy, and was so thrilled to see them offered here in the US. They come in many different colors and you can pick them up at a variety of retailers in the US. Banana Republic offered them a few years ago, and their coupons worked on them, so I picked up 4 pairs for a steal at the time.

I found both brands of shoes to be very comfortable from the get go...no breaking in needed for me at least.

Have fun on your trip! :)

  15. @Slidergirl Where do you find this Lush solid shampoo? How big (heavy) are the bars? I would be interested in trying this!

I'm not Slidergirl...but you can purchase Lush products at their stand alone stores, or order online at their site (I think Amazon also carries some of their products).

  16. Thank you ladies!!! I am petite but find I can fit into some regular tops. Definitely have some hips and a bit of a belly at my age but not in plus. Also, capris in regular can end up being regular length on me. Maxi dresses look so fun but I don't have any. They seem easy for a cruise but can sometimes be overwhelming on me if they are a pattern. We are in a rural area so do a lot of my shopping online then take a trip a few times a year to Phoenix for in person shopping.

So fun to plan. So I now have a few websites to browse. Had not thought of WHBM or Target!

I love maxi dresses and find them very versatile. I'm short, but there are plenty of places that offer petite sizing for maxis. I don't typically buy patterned clothing in general, so all of my maxis are solid colors. For me/my body, I try to find ones that are at fitted in the top.

I have a bunch of colors in this style from Nordstrom (free shipping/free returns all the time)

    http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/loveappella-v-neck-jersey-maxi-dress-regular-petite/3965546?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=MIDNIGHT

I also have had pretty good luck with maxis (or midis) from Banana Republic, Gap and even Old Navy over the years. I always buy the reg length as well as the petite length, because sometimes the regular length fits me fine.

    Good luck! Have fun shopping!

  17. I seldom purchase anything that is cruise-specific. I simply pack clothes I enjoy wearing.... smart, stylish outfits for dinner, shorts or sundresses for warm days in port, etc. That said, probably half of my closet is from White House Black Market, and it's one of the first places I go when I just want something new for an upcoming trip or "just because." I can almost always find some good white pants, which I always take on a cruise, as well as good black pants, which are easy to take and wear multiple evenings with different tops. I also find that WHBM carries a lot of stylish tops that are dressy enough for nice dinners without being over the top formal. I also have a great dress I bought there years ago.... sleeveless black A-line, a little on the short side, and made of a packable jersey material that doesn't wrinkle and has just enough of a sheen to it. It's a formal night go-to that is easily dressed up with jewelry and the right shoes.

Ditto. Exactly me as well. I don't typically shop specifically for any trip/vacation...I really wear that same things I wear at home. More than half my clothes are from Banana Republic (fantastic sales), but I shop all over the place - Nordstrom, Saks, Talbots, Ann Taylor, White House Black Market, Gap, Athleta, Soft Surroundings etc This is exactly me...except more than half of my clothing is from Banana Republic.

  18. Definitely drink a lot of water...avoid alcohol if possible. I don't have too much of a problem on long flights, I just put on some light moisturizer every few hours. I use those little cans of Evian facial spray - they're great for long flights. I pick them up at places like Ulta, Sephora, Saks, Nordstrom etc...they go on sale, and you can use coupons on them. I'm not a fan of facial wipes, they just end up making my face feel dirty. I'm weird tho! :)

  19. I would also go with a 'fit and flare' as opposed to an empire waistline or wrap (although you may be able to find something that works). I think empire waist dresses can look extremely unflattering on people with larger bustlines (but again, depends on the dress, the person etc).

I personally love wrap dresses and don't have a problem with gaping...I have a 34DD bustline but a small waist, so they're pretty easy to wear for me. I normally can't do an empire waist dress - they just look like maternity frocks on me. Just my experience though!

You may just need to order a bunch of different styles and see what works - try to find a retailer with free returns :).

How formal of a dress are you looking for? Banana Republic has a lot of dresses on sale right now (free returns by mail) and they always have great sales. Their dresses are typically business casual/date night/cocktail style dresses.

    http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=1014739&sop=true

  20. Just my opinion, but I would rather see an imperfectly tied necktie, done by the wearer or spouse, than a pre-tied one. They just look so stiff and tight.

I agree...the clip on/pre tied versions of ties look pretty bad. I would just practice at home - it won't take long at all before you can tie the perfectly.
