  1. Congrats on the UPGRADE...I can promise you that over half...yes HALF the people in the aven got there through the upgrade system...so dont worry about it...dont judge it...just enjoy it..you can usually get entrance into things that show as sold out b/c it always seems that they hold a number of seats for last minute Haven guests...

ALSO and this is HUGE...when you are in the common areas of the ship...outside the HAVEN..when approaching the bar or ordering anything make your special designated HAVEN key card noticeable..the crew will go to great lengths...

    example..

in the MDR a couple was in front of us to have dinner and was told 40 min wait...they left...i walk up...take out the Haven key card...ask if there is any seating immediately for dinner...and were told...."right this way" and we were ushered in.

    IT IS WONDERFUL.

    Best,

    Mark

Yup, same goes if you have to tender anywhere (and for general disembarkation)... Haven guests can get escorted to the front of the line via staff elevator from Moderno. Coming back on board by tender there is typically a dude holding up a 'Haven' sign... which again short-cuts the process.

  2. Thank you for clarifying. Looking for easy, getting around with mom. Is there a dedicated Haven elevator that runs to all floors? I ask because our only cruise experience to date has been the TA on the Epic this past April. We loved the cruise ship, but the elevators were pretty busy. We walked the stairs, but Mom wasn’t with us then.

If you're on the Jade, there is a shared elevator that covers all decks but requires a keycard to make it to the final floor and the Haven. Breakfast is one deck, one elevator stop or one short flight of stairs down from the Haven in Moderno. You might wait a bit for that elevator if folks on the decks below have it busy, but it'll come!

  3. Hmmm, here’s my understanding (untested): you WILL receive the maximum cabin class points allowable points IF you paid the full prevailing published fare for the cabin in which you travel irrespective of whether you paid it to move up from a lower cabin class. You will receive the original points level (lower) if you upgraded via the bidding mechanism.

That would be LOGICAL, but I have not tested the hypothesis!

  4. I do, slow pokes need to learn how to not be a hazard on a track. If one is afraid to dive a go kart then do not try to drive on on the track. Timid drivers who think slow automatically means safe cause more accidents than any other class of driver (ceteris paribus).

You do not understand motorsports and have clearly never raced, or at least clearly never been in the lead for more than a second and clearly never won. Go watch Monaco, the driver on pole won 10 of the last 17 races, was he a 'slow poke' who should move out of the way to let you past? No. If a driver runs slower than you but you do not have sufficient skill to pass off the racing line, or move him off the racing line, the problem is with you not him. (Fortuna eruditis favet).

Somewhat academic in what is supposed to be a fun activity but your attitude, as already noted in this thread, and on several other threads prompts correction and your promotion to my ignore list.

  5. New to NCL. Sailing in December. Thinking about the duck boat in Missouri. Do tenders normally give pax life jackets? Better to be safe, than sorry.

Yes there are life jackets on the tenders, you aren't given one, nor are you instructed how to use them; the tenders are in fact also lifeboats, so one of the 'safest' places to be (in theory).

  6. We walk into town and have a nice dinner at the 'Steamship Grill & Bar' near the ferry terminal (outside if weather is good), lots of comings and goings to watch, decent food and ambiance.

The port is kinda 'meh'... really just a placeholder IMHO.

  7. Notnewtoit, I think we were separated at birth! You just described me and my husband... down to the Jeep, except ours is a cracked side view mirror and dented front fender... both from that damn garage that keeps moving when we back out... 🚙 😂

Ha! It is possible... my Dad was a bit 'errant'!

  8. This is why I used the example of ncl closing off the sundeck to kids. This certainly implies an issue that is more likely than not to occur and much more than a small chance.

Fair point. Is that a fleet/sailing-wide directive now?

  9. I agree with you 100%.

And I have certainly been accused of being a NCL cheerleader. So I do not consider myself a complainer.

But, yes, we are a small percent of NCL's base here on Cruise Critic, and I have read many accounts over the year ranging from

    A. Quiet and peacful without a kid in sight

    B. Rich Kid's pool - kids there but not overrun. Some might be rowdy.

    C. All-out mad house overrun with screaming kids

So, it is a crap-shoot. But what does that matter what someone else's experience was if your week is "C"???

I have experienced only "A" and "B" on Jewel class and Mega (Epic), but I do believe "C" happens. And I commisserate!

I like kids but well-behaved ones.

Yup. Donna, as an aside, I see you have MSCYC upcoming in your signature... do you have any experience of this issue on MSCYC? (As a place an NCL Haven'r might bolt to?)

  10. As a business owner, I fully understand the concept of people going online to complain more often than praise. But this is a little different. NCL recognized the problem is bad enough that they kicked kids off the sundeck in the Haven recently. They weren't doing that on our sailing. It's an issue, a growing issue. Multi bedroom units with "3rd and 4th" (KIDS!) sail free. It's a built in issue. Maybe not on Jewel class, but definitely on Escape.

All that aside, if you are looking to book your yearly or whatever vacation, paying extra for that special Haven experience, what percentage of cruisers would want to play the "day care lotto"? Why would someone book this experience when there is a seemingly large chance of it being a disappointment due to kids ruining the tranquility of the product you bought? Who would want to knowingly do this when there are other, better options available?

Agreed but I take issue with just one word "large"[chance]. There is a chance, we have no valid or reliable data to conclude that it is large; the 'complain' hypothesis/law of averages would more strongly support "small"[chance].

That small chance is a problem that NCL needs to get on top of... 100% agreed.

  11. Thank you.

NCL most certainly sells a shangri la tranquil experience. "Quiet" is not how ANY person would describe the Haven during our sailing, and it seems this is a recurring theme with lots of other disappointed cruisers as well.

It has been said many times that CC tends to attract people who want to share a negative experience, people who had a positive experience tend not to come here and post. So while there clearly are problems with the Haven on some sailings it would be wrong to use empirical posting data from this board to conclude too much.

By way of example, we have exclusively sailed Jewel(s) Havens (subliminal message there) and have had no issues whatsoever... place was like a morgue and could have benefitted from a live body or two!

All of this not to argue with the bad experiences like yours that HAVE clearly occurred, they are unacceptable given the 'billing' of the Haven and I would be posting them too... I would just hate for someone looking here to research/book the Havens (particularly Jewels) to take away that the impression that they are all horrible most of the time on all ships. It's simply not the case.

  12. The next class in the plan is smaller than the Breakaway Plus class. Project Leonardo ships are about 3300 passengers, I think, down from over 4000.

The logic of one ship that takes 4000 people a week to the same boring ports is lost on me, but I don’t have anyone that travels with me that enjoys water slides or go carts or mini golf or arcades or any of the other “features” that clutter up the larger ships. Families love them, so they’re built.

I’m a bit appalled that people are upset the go carts aren’t always available on the Bliss. You’re in freakin’ Alaska. Look around! If your kids don’t understand or appreciate the beauty of nature, just take them to the go cart track in your town and save a few grand.

Great post and I'm relieved that the new ships scale down a little as we are 100% Jewel fans and avoid the larger ships like the plague (no kids see... but we get it).

One thought that occurs to me here though is that NCLH owns Oceania and Regent of course... who 'tend' to run smaller ships (thus far)... So even if they do go 'mega' at Norwegian they may view it that their portfolio of brands still has smaller even boutique options. Kinda depends if they start looking at it as an integrated brand family or 3 unrelated companies with a single owner.

Going all mega, would push us 'up-brand'. Which could be an up or out strategy, but I haven't noticed NCLH thinking that way (yet). FDR seems more focused on the bottom of the Norwegian bottom line, not the top.

  13. Obviously this is an absolute failure of the domestic Chinese market to deliver revenues up to the level NCL expected. This is a huge loss for the company. First is the money, the money spent researching, designing, and building a ship especially suited to Chinese tastes. Then the $50 Million to tear it all out and make it Bliss v2.0. Then you have the effort of developing institutional cultural competency, delivering a vacation experience to a culture vastly different then the one NCL was used to serving.

This should seriously scare a lot of the western mainstream lines from doing something like this for a while.

Meanwhile in other news, the NCLH share price went up 5.40% yesterday and EPS guidance raised from $4.55 to $4.70...

  14. Folks, does anyone know definitively where this NCL excursion actually goes to when in Puerto Limon? Answer not immediately obvious to me despite a search here and ports of call.

'Azul' Beach Club seems like a reasonable guess... but has anyone done the excursion and able to confirm/deny/correct?

    TYIA
