  1. What about renting a scooter?  This would give her more autonomy than you needing to push her around the ship, and allow her to determine if/when she feels up to walking to her destination on board.

A different line with a smaller ship may be an option, but Royal has some smaller ships in the fleet that could be doable with planning. If you know in advance which areas on tthe ship you will frequent most often, book a cabin near the elevators in that region (i.e. aft elevators on Radiance class drop you off close to the Windjammer).  Then take the scooter to places that are more forward like the theater.

There are also limited accessible cabins that will be more roomy with the scooter in them, or of course a suite that you would perhaps want to take into account when selecting room/location/what areas she might prefer walking to rather than scooting.

As I mentioned, with the scooter she won't be reliant on you for help.  Which is not only good for both of you physically and in terms of autonomy, but will allow you to do your own things if you want.  One of my favorite parts of cruising vs land vacations is that if my husband and I don't want to do the same things we just don't- he'll go to the casino and I'll go to a show (for example).  The scooter would allow both of you freedom to do what you want rather than being tethered together.

  2. Hi all,

Looking for the best place for crab that also has non shellfish options.  My husband loves shellfish and very rarely gets to eat it because the old ball and chain (me) is allergic and so clearly doesn't cook it for him.  😉

I've read rave reviews of Tracy's, but all they have that's non-crab is pulled pork, which I'm not opposed to, but would like a few extra options if possible.

Between ISP, Sitka, and Juneau, where is a good place where he can get crab, but I might also have a choice of something to eat?

    Thank you!

A little more Astrophysics. Because I KNOW that these are the pictures you all are dying to see.

I've been happily reading along because we're going to be on Quantum next week in Alaska.  Then I saw this and just had to share with my engineer husband who originally majored in Astrophysics. This was a grievous mistake, as he is now providing me with his own, personal Astrophysics lesson in our living room.

Somehow I doubt they'll repeat the lecture on a more port intensive cruise, but if they do I know they'll have at least one interested attendee (spoiler alert: not me).

Thank you so much everyone for your thoughts/replies. I guess technically it’s not medical (I can go without it) it’s just like having a massage on my arm or a lymphatic drain massage. I will call or email them just for peace of mind I think as I would like to take it as arm is worse  and swells in the heat (and we going South Pacific) and the massages on ship are

quite expensive so wouldn’t want to have a daily massage there 🙈

    Thanks again

Don't sell yourself or your needs short!  It is absolutely medical!  I'm a certified lymphedema therapist and would certainly write you a letter if you were my patient, so in the unlikely case Royal gives you any pushback reach out to your MD or CLT.

Heat and air travel are both triggers for lymphedema. Please take care of yourself and wear your garments and use your pump.  I don't know that any of the on ship therapists would be trained in MLD, so take care of you.  ❤️

  5. Our phones and ipads are so integral to what we do even to relax that I don't think I would ever go without wifi.  We're not "young" or "old."  Squarely middle aged at 41 and 42.  But we are so used to having them with us all the time that it would never even occur to us to put them away, lol.  I know that we're probably some of the people that others consider sad, and it is somewhat pathetic 😉. I have to stay somewhat in touch for my job, although I try to limit it.

I use my devices to access my Kindle Unlimited subscriptions to read, continuing ed for my career that I'm interested in but don't have time for in my day to day life, play silly games, etc...  But I'm doing it from a beautiful, relaxing place.

And aside from all that, my husband and I do have a relationship with good conversations- sometimes sparked by things we see on our phones. We've price compared duty free items to the cost back home. We do many things that aren't just frivolous.

That being said, I admire those who can truly disconnect- I'm way too ADD and plugged in to ever really turn off.  But I figured with so many people saying they lock away their devices, I would fess up to the fact that we use ours rather consistently, lol.

Fair enough and I’m one of them. Losing interest in cruising is different than losing interest in Princess cruises. My point being it’s not the fault of Princess and I think it’s admirable for the way they’ve conducted themselves considering they have zero control over the proceedings.

I agree that it's not their fault.

Ppl around me know I love to cruise. But now many ppl are saying how all cruise ships are just nasty petri dishes. Can't blame them.

Sample size of just me and my husband, but this incident is WHY I booked with Princess.  My husband and I have taken a few cruises on Royal, were happy enough, and decided to just keep building our loyalty points on one line.  After the hit that Princess is taking (I feel unfairly), and seeing the offer they made to their workers, I decided to check them out and found an itinerary that Royal doesn't offer.  Boom, booked.  If this incident had never occurred, or if their handling of it had been worse I never would have looked at their product.

In terms of cruise ships being petri dishes, of course they are, to an extent.  But that's also because they're easily identifiable as such.  If one person with norovirus is on a ship and spreads it through poor hand washing, it's easy to see the spread because everyone is all together.  But if that same person went to the movies or an airport, then infected one or two others through poor hand washing, then those one or two people did the same, it would be the same spread, but not trackable as everyone is dispersed to different locations.  The world is a petri dish.

  7. On page three of your set sail papers is a smaller black and white copy of your luggage tags. It should read with your new cabin number, if your set sail has indeed been upgraded to a different deck level.

I have used that in the past when I had a last minute change of cabin. Works just fine, or as other post mentioned, you

can have the porters do your tags.

I just like the clear and more easy to read typed tag. Some of the porters have hand writing that is worse than I have. :p

The third page does indeed reflect the new cabin number on a small copy of the luggage tag! I just didn't know if that was a "real" luggage tag since it's so much smaller. I had purchased the plastic luggage tag holders you referenced as well, and it's definitely not the right size for those!

Thanks for the advice everyone. Now I just have to worry about whether or not either my husband and I will get seasick. I initially picked midship level 3 since we were newbie cruisers and wanted to make sure we mitigated the movement. New cabin is deck seven, somewhat forward, but still fairly midship. But I'm certainly not going to look a gift horse in the mouth!

  8. Hi there! My husband and I are leaving on Sunday for our first ever cruise. Being a good little overplanner I have been voraciously reading these threads since the day I booked in January. I have seen many upgrade fairy posts, but never thought it would happen to us!

However, I logged in this morning to print our set sail pass and noted that our cabin is now a deck 7 balcony rather than a deck 3 oceanview. However, our luggage tags are still noted as the deck 3 oceanview cabin. Am I correct in assuming that these two systems don't talk to each other and we will need to get tags from a porter? Do I just show them the new set sail pass once we arrive at the port?

Thank you in advance for any answers. Also thank you to all of you for your posts in the past. As I mentioned, I have been reading the boards pretty much daily since January. I am actually slightly bummed that our cruise is the same week as the sure to be epic live blogs coming this week, lol. Although I suppose that will give me something to read to get over the post cruise blues when I get home. ;)
