I understand your view, we all have to make our own minds up.  Your dilemma (actually everybody’s) will not even go away once there is a vaccine, we just do not know when we will have one, how efficient it is in working, whether there will be variations to the virus (mutants), whether there is a 2nd, 3rd, 4th wave and when they occur.

My view is to have balance with all those things.  As we all well know, there are no guarantees, so we have to decide when and where and how we are willing to mitigate those concerns (at least in our own minds).  To echo your first line, we have to be alive, but I also want to live the time I have left in this world, and doing that in a bubble will just not make the cut.

Yes - at some point quality of life is more important than quantity...

  2. They would lose too many customers if they required everyone to have a doctor’s note. There’s a lot of uninsured people, people who wouldn’t want the hassle, people who wouldn’t on principle (it’s invasive), and people who couldn’t get one. They won’t start requiring them unless the government orders them to. As for only certain populations having to have one, that’s discrimination and a class-action lawsuit would be sure to follow.

  3. They still haven’t cancelled my May 16 out of Amsterdam, even though the did cancel my Asia cruise a year from now! (Makes no sense!) I refuse to fly right now so no way I’m going on this, as much as I was looking forward to it. I wish they’d stop leaving people hanging, accept reality, and extend the cancellation as other lines have done. I’m as anxious to get back to cruising as anybody but understand that won’t happen until mid-summer. Clearly the cruise line execs know this too and are just leaving people hanging in a money grab - from people making new reservations and people cancelling instead of waiting for them to cancel and take the extra 25% or 50% or whatever it is (I don’t know because when THEY cancelled my March cruise I only got 100% FCC)

  4. I hope so. I have one out of Quebec City in September. Want to go since we can drive to the port instead of fly. Things are starting to open up next month so I really think they’ll be sailing by then. Flying was the most dangerous and that never even shut down!

  5. I booked one less than 48 hours in advance once. The cruise wasn’t even up on the website anymore, yet I paid a lot more and for a worse cabin than I was used to. The cabin was next to a room with a noisy motor, very cramped, and an odd shape. I got much better deals booking far in advance during sales.

  6. Those ones towards the top - I think they’re going to have to change the names and trick people to get enough to make a profit. I will be watching for that. The ones that had only one case I would not be put off by. Glad I already had a chance to sail on Oasis - beautiful ship. I’m already booked on Encore in January and won’t cancel

  7. I don’t know about these “last minute deals.” I booked one 2 days prior to sailing, when the cruise wasn’t even up on their website anymore so the cabin I booked probably would have gone unsold.  (I saw it on the site in the morning but wanted to think about it. When I checked back later the cruise was gone, so I just called.) I ended up with an odd shaped, cramped cabin next to a noisy back room at a higher price than I would ordinarily pay booking much further in advance.

  8. Cruise line cancelled our March cruise and I’m going to cancel May if the cruise line doesn’t first - not because I’m afraid of cruising but because I’m afraid of flying and it’s in Europe. I’m not flying until at least November. Going to see if I can find a good deal on another one I can drive to in June or July assuming ships begin sailing again. I agree - it is very sad. I’m itching like crazy to cruise and otherwise travel again.

  9. I will absolutely cruise again! I assume my May Europe cruise will be cancelled but I am booked in September and November and I don’t plan on canceling either. I’m also hoping to book another sooner - but I will not fly until at least November, so I need to be able to drive to the port. I would not sail on any of the ships that had issues, though.

Who is going on cruises this year. The largest % of cruiser are age fifty and above that is the worst % group for catching the virus. Cruise ships have been known for years as a place that is hard to control virus from spreading. At lease all you can get  is sick for a couple days this new virus can kill you.

I am, as long as they sail. Not going next month in Europe - even if it’s not cancelled I’m not willing to fly until November. I have others scheduled for September (can drive to) and November, and I have no intention of cancelling. I would also consider booking another sooner, but only if I didn’t have to fly to it. Will be turning 50 this year. The real outbreak was on land when the ships stopped sailing, not at sea, and I would have felt safer on my canceled cruise than back at home!

I agree 100% - the places that benefit and/or depend on tourism need to step up.  Whether or not they have the money is another matter.  But while I don't think the "US" as a whole should necessarily provide funds, those areas of the US like Alaska and Florida might need to  provide some financial aid as part of their individual state plans (I hope those exist!) for economic recovery.

Florida and Alaska? Many more places benefit. In the US I’ve sailed out of or into NYC, Baltimore, Boston, Seattle, New Orleans, and LA - and there are more ports than that. Every time I’ve pumped money into the local economies staying at hotels, eating at restaurants, and visiting tourist attractions. I often make a road trip out of the trip to the cruise port, spending additional money in other cities along the way. Alaska and Seattle is a way oversimplification of the benefit the industry has on the US

  12. I disagree with the government’s call. While it’s true that most of the shipboard employees are foreign workers and the ships “base” themselves in foreign countries, they provide a huge benefit to the US economy. For one thing, all those port workers in US ports are citizens or legal residents. Second, enough people arrive in the port town early or stay on for a couple or few days after the cruise for tourism, boosting the economy significantly for these local areas. Finally, I agree with the people who say a lot fewer people would cruise if the cost were multiplied. If that happened, most of those benefits I just cited would be lost. Maybe they shouldn’t get the same amount - and they can beg their “flag” countries to make up the difference (good luck with that!) but they should get some help.

  13. My March 15 cruise on the Bliss out of NYC was cancelled by the cruise line. We were in NY ready to go and did not cancel ourselves, yet instead of the 150% FCC we were supposed to get we only got 100%. The credit showed up on my account on the app, under my cruise next vouchers. My cruise next vouchers were also credited back. Guess I will have to call to find out why I didn’t get 150%. I booked through casinos at sea.

  14. I have one booked in May. I assume it will cancel, but if it doesn’t I still won’t go since a flight would be required. Next one I have booked is September, possible to drive to and I will go. Last one booked in 2020 is November and requires a flight. Very nervous about flying but will go and hope safe to fly by then. Would I book another cruise between now and then? Absolutely, but no earlier in June and absolutely no flights!

  15. I sailed in mid-January in the Caribbean and caught something that was far more severe than any flu I’d ever had. No one was talking about COVID 19 then. But for sure it wasn’t flu. I had the “hot chills”, high fever, coughing, shortness of breath just walking to be bathroom, fatigue, and muscle aches so bad I was taking hot showers every hour because it was the only thing that provided any relief. Then in March I was in NY and NJ but haven’t gotten sick again since January. Now I’m really wondering if I already had it, and wish I knew.

  16. I live in Tampa Bay and have sailed out of here multiple times. It’s worse than a few years ago. Last time I had to take all of my computers, tablets, etc. out of my luggage just like at the airport. That was aggravating.  So I recommend keeping those in a separate bag. Other than that and the long lines the port is fine. Lines weren’t worse than some of the other ports I’ve used.

STOP asking if your cruise will be CANCELLED!
Lots of threads here asking the SAME THING! Can someone start a thread to say STOP!
Watch the news, and don't be so self-centered. YOUR cruise is not gonna happen for a long time...

I log on here to see other peoples's experiences with their symptoms (COVID-19) after previous cruise BEFORE it was "Officially Diagnosed".  I had symptoms in October...

Your cruise is not happening in the next 6 -24 months. Research how to get your $ back just as I did when Sandy ripped through here and had to rebuild.

STOP being self-centered about your cruise and put that energy into helping who are out of work and support healthcare workers.

Have you lost your home due to tornadoes, floods? I did. Somehow society has lost their values...

Sure...you need to get your $ back and I totally understand.  But PLEASE stop MINIMIZING this crisis and posting ENDLESS issues  about when WE CAN CRUISE AGAIN.

Get a grip people. Channel your energy into helping others and NOT about your impending cruise which may or may/not be cancelled.  Use your head!

We all want to cruise again...but it is not happening in the near future and USE COMMON SENSE and STOP BEING self-absorbed about your Cruise that was cancelled.

I have a cruise booked in September 2021.  Right now, I am more concerned how my College kid will continue his education via remote learning and my other son can continue his education at night in Trades.  My son cleared out his dorm at NJ College which may be converted to Hospital Beds to support pandemic to Tri-State.

Yes,  this is Cruise Critic and we chat about cruising.  Right about now, y'all need to stop asking STUPID questions about your sailing(s) in 2 months.

    Relax.  It will be okay.

    JMO and be safe 🙂

The economy is in crisis, too. Too many people are quick to forget about that. I’m eager to take my scheduled cruises because I want to help the cruise line stay afloat (no pun intended) and all of those people that rely on it for their job so that they can support their family and survive. For the same reason I have been ordering a lot of restaurant take out. That is not selfish! We all still have to “survive” after this virus runs it’s course!
