  1. Love your pictures! We are doing Chilkoot tours in 2 weeks. Very excited! Was the lunch at Caribou Crossing able to accommodate GF? Traveling with peanut/tree nut allergies and tried contacting them but have not heard back. Thank you!!

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Yes what you see in the photo of the meal is gf. There was no alternative roll or dessert but the plate was filling enough. She didn't try but I imagine she could have asked for another half of a potato. I had also tried to contact them in advance and also did not get a response.

  2. The one daily planner set I saw said that the changeover from PDT to AKDT was at 2am of the morning of the first port call (so we would spend the first sea day in PDT). I didn't think to check when the time switched back.

Thanks! Was this a one-way cruise or RT? Because I did a search and found some info from last year, someone said the RT just did Alaska time the whole cruise after departing Vancouver?

  3. Sailing out of Vancouver in 6 days!!

Which days should we expect to change the clock back and forward for Alaska/Pacific times. Just planning ahead because my medication needs to be taken at the same time each day.

    Thanks!!

  4. The biggest problem people have posting photos with Tapatalk is getting past how easy it is. Don't look for any real, complicated ways to do it. Once you subscribe to cruise critic and find the thread that you will want to post in, it's just a matter of pressing on the button that says Photos Files and it will take what ever is on your device, host it for you, and then post the photo in your message.

HAHA of course, if there's a way for it to get complicated, I would find it! I can't remember my CC password so I can't log in through Tapatalk. And when I ask to reset my password, I get my email isn't valid. Nice! Glad I started early and not the day we're leaving! ;p

Looking forward to your "Live" reports and pictures.

Thanks! I hope I get the kinks worked out so I can actually do it! :o

  5. If you have an Android smartphone or tablet then I highly suggest using Tapatalk. . It makes it so much easier to post photos..

Thanks for your suggestion. Downloading now!

  6. This one tells me I need to sign in to shutterfly. Your earlier coffee photo came free of charge.:)

Yeah that was obviously wrong and not at all what I wanted to do! So sometimes shutterfly gives me the option to copy an image and sometimes it doesn't. I was hoping to be able to upload images from my phone, and I still think there must be a way to do this, but so far I'm not figuring out how. Might have to wait until I have access to my laptop before I can post photos. How frustrating! Thanks for your encouragement!!

  7. Please don't underestimate how much posters would appreciate photos of daily planners and even menus. ;)

I would never underestimate that!! I've been appreciating them myself for over a year!

    Eeyore!

  8. enhance

So I learned how to copy and paste photos from my computer, but not from my phone. Welcoming any help! I have a Google phone. Can't figure out how to copy an image with shutterfly or in my photos files.

    Thanks!

BTW, above is a photo of a recent cup of coffee in Brooklyn, NY. If I can figure out how to do this, expect lots of food porn!

  9. I use Shutterfly -- free -- download pictures there and then you can copy and paste them into your report.

Can you please specify how to do this. I can't seem to figure out how to copy and paste my photos. OP, I hope you don't mind I'm asking for further clarification on your thread. Thanks!

  10. Thanks I am interested the name of chef in American Test Kitchen and days that they offer the hands-on workshops offered for a fee. I took the chocolate cake decorating class on previous cuise.

Will look up this info while aboard and post for you! Don't know when you're sailing, but I hope this helps!

  11. Cabbies will be very used to US credit cards - they should have no problem doing a 'swipe & sign' and yes you can add a tip to the bill before paying it. BWC is a large resto with lots of US celebrity visitors when in town filming. It would be very embarrassing if someone could not manage to accept e.g. The Rock's visa;-) S&B is a smaller, family-run place, but the staff turnover is very low so again I'd be surprised if anyone is working who cannot manage to override the normal Chip & PIN.

Food trucks... almost all of them seem to use Square or similar, which are mostly based around Swiping the card and Signing on the tablet screen, so no problems there either, but a few remain cash only. Your major problem areas are public transit (which is entirely unmanned, and ticket vending machines can ask for PIN verification, hence the other thread you refer to) and small stores/restos with low pricing thus low-paid staff (and usually minimal training, high turnover, so a better chance of finding a random teller or waitron who does not know how to operate all functions of the terminal).

Simply ask when you're being seated if they know how to handle a non-Chip card to save any hassle later in restos - for stores, worst case is not being able to buy the stuff but since you did not already consume it there is no contractual requirement for you to pay. With a resto eating the food means you are legally required to pay up even if you have to run out to an ATM leaving your jewelry/spouse/children as collateral;-)

Thanks for your detailed response. You mention public transit...what about the ferries that cross False Creek, as we intend to take one over to Granville Island? Should we be prepared with cash for this? Honestly, we hadn't been planning to bring any Canadian dollars with us, but now I'm thinking we might pack a few for things like tips and transit and "just in case" scenarios.

Also, will call AMEX and Visa to request PINs...we already have chips. I never knew PINs were a thing and I'm wondering why they don't automatically require them with the upgrade to chips.

Thanks again to all for this discussion.

  12. There is a "Live from Volendam" thread over on the HAL board that has attachments with menus and activities from the 7 day sailing. The crew info will be different but everything else should be the same. We are sailing on NA in 8 days and found this live report very helpful. Will be doing one of our own as well, so keep your eyes peeled.

    Bon voyage!

  13. Another thread on this board started by CJMini has me now worried if we will be able to use our US issued AMEX and Visa cards in Vancouver!

We were planning to take a taxi from YVR to our downtown hotel (paying with CC) as there are 4 in our party. Will this work? Can we add the tip to the CC bill?

Also, we have reservations at Salmon and Bannock and Blue Water Cafe. Will there be a problem with our CCs in those venues? And what about lunch places? Will probably do street food or smaller restaurants depending on where we are or when we're hungry. Now I'm considering bring more Canadian cash than originally thought.

    Advice, please! Thanks so much!

  14. We will be sailing NA in August. Please post a trip report on your return. Have a great cruise!:)

Yes, I plan to do this, hopefully at least semi-live!

You might want to order Joe Upton's Alaska Cruise Handbook;A Mile by Mile Guide.

It provides info on sights to see along the way .... lighthouses, points of interest, popular whale watching locations, etc. As well as a map.

Thanks for the tip! Just purchased the Kindle edition!!

  15. since I wasn't sure what ship or size the OP was on, I kept my info to the more usual route.

Now I'm going to have to go dig through my photos and find out which ship because it'll bug me if I don't. Thanks Kamloops. ;p

Thank you both for the great info! We are sailing on HAL's Nieuw Amsterdam. Juneau is our first port.

  16. We will be embarking in 11 days on a RT sailing out of Vancouver inside passage. I'm wondering if there are any particular sights or lanmarks that are not-to-be missed? I know it will all be gorgeous in general, but we wouldn't want to miss anything extra special!

    Thanks!
