Gratuities Are Going Up Again, Effective 11.11.2023

That’s what happens on P&O no tips or gratuities to pay unless you think you got exceptional service. Everyones a winner unless you stick to the prensent model. -

I’m not looking at it because I think we’ve got a better system over here, I’m looking at because I don’t believe in paying for good service until I’ve had it whichever country employs a system. But it seems that on this discussion people are fed up of being put on by corporate responsibility when they should be paying a living wage to their employees. I am not leading the way but listening to what people are saying on the thread something will have to change eventually. It’s all about listening and learning. -

Well it sounds as though the U S model is on its way out from what I read on this thread. Tipping servers and bartenders on land is different because you’ve had the food and the drinks and then you tip. Unlike Royal wanting you to tip before you had the service which is what a lot of what this thread is all about. -

I don’t screw crew members and I’m hard working and can afford several cruises, I’m just not doing what the company should be doing paying them a fair wage. -

We are all hard working people and it’s down to the company to pay them a fair wage. So the company is pulling on your heart felt strings to help pay their wages when it’s their responsibility. -

Transparency is what you get in the UK as what you see is what you pay, no this tax and that tax which unfortunately is what you get in America $50 then $20 of add on’s -

Some of us are missing the point on what a gratuity or tip is. They are for giving that bit extra above what you think is normal service and normal service should be paid by whatever company they’re working for as it’s their job. I don’t go to work and get a gratuity or tip before I start, I get a bonus at the end of the job. You don’t go to a restaurant and give the waiter/waitress a tip as soon as you walk in and then order your food. Rccl are expecting you to pay some of the wages. Very interesting subject let’s hope Royal are reading. -

Will be interested in your feedback on the Jewel, as I was interested in your input. I will still not pay for a service from which I have not received yet but I will reward for good service above the call of duty which is what a gratuity is for. I also believe from what I am reading that RCCL have shot themselves in the foot, if they only said we are changing pricing structure and it’s up to the guest to give whatever for a tip the views might be different. Lastly I hope the hierarchy are reading this. -

I’m also going through the whole of March on a cruise in a suite not on RCL. The cruise price is one and they say no need for gratuities, but I will hand out to those that have gone above the call of duty so I know what I’m doing with my bean counters. Rcl’s bean counter goes in their favour when reducing the service and expecting guests to pay half the wages. Again I don’t tip until I had the goods or service. -

Agree fully, when out in town you wouldn’t tip the waiter or waitress until you’ve had the meal and the service you’re expecting. I shall be removing mine and tipping as I go around the ship for people that give me the special service. -
Royal just raised gratuities will Celebrity follow.

Very interesting, it seems that those that expected it didn’t stay. I’ve taken a line from the link which I thought was good. “I think tipping creates a really weird dynamic in my restaurant where customers feel like they’re hiring my employee,” said chef and owner Aaron -

I’ve had some really good waiters/waitresses but some bad. Look interested, some are more interested in having a good old discussion with their colleagues, excuse me before reaching in between guests. We all make mistakes but getting your orders right are a priority. Don’t look as though you want to get the guests out as soon as you get them in there. On one occasion other guests on our table went to a specialty restaurant. We came in in sat down had our starter and after that was totally ignored due to about 8 staff members coming to sit down on table next to us. Waiter and assistant didn’t even acknowledge that we were there, hence we got up and left, not even an apology next evening so we got up and went to Jonnie rockets in our formal wear.
