  1. San Juan terminal is nothing like the others from the US. There are no porters to help with luggage when you exit your transportation to the terminal. The 2 times we cruised from SJ we had to tote our luggage thru a parking lot and over the cement barrier ( one of those barrier's to stop cars) that was somewhat higher than the regular street curb. Taxi driver would not pull up any closer and also did not help with luggage retrieval from the vehicle. Needless to say he was not tipped. Also there is a line to drop off luggage and a line to get in terminal.

I would definitely be prepared with my own luggage tags. I print mine then use clear packing tape to make them more durable. After putting the tape around them add a piece of tape with a folded end to the taped tag ( I usually make it the full length of the tag) when you are ready to attach to luggage just pull the tape from the folded end and wrap around the luggage handle. You can also just punch a hole and use a ziptie to attach to luggage handle. I always put a tag on both the top handle and the side.

I know this all sounds like a lot to do, but to me it's part of the excitement leading up to the cruise.

  2. I can't see them confiscating mattress toppers. What would be the reason?

I seriously doubt they would take it away. My stepmother actually brings a twin side air mattress with her every time. The only problem she has had on the Serenade a couple years ago, the room steward had her supervisor come in the cabin to see if it was allowed. They said it was ok as long they could keep it from sliding off the regular mattress if the seas got rocky. So she pushed her bed against the wall and they were happy. Her's get thru checked baggage every time with no problem. I know it's a little much, but hey it's not in my luggage and this way she is not complaining about the beds being hard.

So I would think the one that is being discussed here would be perfectly fine considering how thin it is.

I also want to add that I requested an egg crate on my last cruise on Brilliance and they said they did not have any, after it was suppose to be noted on the reservation. They added comforters instead.

  3. When buying luggage..... bring along a luggage scale. It's amazing how much of the luggage itself counts to the 50lb limit.

This is what I did when I last bought luggage. Everyone looked at me like I had lost it. However, what I found was that Samsonite has some of the heaviest luggage. The wheels can cause problems with the carryon size luggage so I also brought a tape measure with me. I now have carryon's that I know will fit even on the smaller planes and a 25" that holds everything I need for a 7-9 day cruise.

Since I prefer the soft sided luggage to avoid the rain issue when my luggage is getting loaded on the ship or plane I put all my things in the large ziplock bags. Dollar General has their own brand of these bags and cost only $1 each compared to the ziplock brand. So my clothes stay dry and a little less wrinkled even if my luggage gets wet.

    Hope this helps.

    Have a great cruise!

  4. Labadee runs the risk of not only high winds...but torrential rain/flooding...so not so sure it will escape so easily....plus the path of Matthew is still uncertain beyond the next 2 hours...Falmouth will almost certainly take a bit hit unless something changes dramatically today.

I agree. The entire island is covered with rain and winds. Haiti is taking the worst of it. It doesn't matter where on the island Labadee is located, I think she will suffer significant damage, unless the buildings are built to withstand these strong winds.

This is a major hurricane with 145-150 mile winds. This hurricane is almost as big as Hurricane Katrina was in 2006 and she pretty much left nothing in her path in the southern tip of Louisiana where she first made landfall, before causing so much rain that the levees protecting New Orleans were breached. I live south of New Orleans and saw first hand what type of damage a storm of this magnitude can cause.

I don't see how Labadee will be reopened soon.

  5. Haiti is taking the brunt of the storm this morning. I don't see how any ships will be able to visit there in the next couple weeks. There will be massive damage. This storm is not moving very fast so that will have a huge impact on damage.

Those people must be horrified. Praying for them.

  6. Just by looking at the NHC graph for wind speed those traveling to Key West and Coco Cay on Thursday and Friday may experience some hefty winds if she passes any closer to the west in the cone.

Looking at the map with the timeline of the storm, I find it hard to believe that RCI has plans to stop at CocoCay on Thursday. Just my opinion.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun cruise.

  7. While both RCL and Carnival may be considered family cruise lines, Carnival has no curfew for the children or young adults. On my last Carnival cruise there were more rude and vulgar mouthed kids out at night than adults. I complained to guest services and they said we have no rules or curfew. I don't care for vulgarity from adults much less kids.

The no curfew for the kids puts Carnival at high risk for liability issues in my opinion.

I have cruised both RCL and Carnival during times when kids are out of school and Carnival was by far the worst. Too many partying adults with the I'm on vacation attitude.

On Royal we mostly cruise during November or January/February to avoid the kids.

  8. Very sad indeed. I was just there two months ago, for the first time. We only had a short day in which to see Paris but I fell in love with the city and was hoping to go back someday for a longer visit. DH says may have to wait awhile now.

My prayers go out to all the citizens and their families of this terrible tragedy.
