  1. Thanks for coming back and telling of your experience. Is it easy to share a cab with others in line for a taxi, or do you think you need to prearrange it?

If you ship docks at Aloha tower (most do but there are exceptions) all you need to do is go across the street to what looks like a parking lot. There will be a couple of van companies that take folks, on a first come, first served, basis to the airport and Pearl. If I remember correctly there is a booth there as well. We have been there 3 times in the last couple of years and I have just gone up to the van drivers and asked. Never had a problem.

  2. Does anyone know if Princess has scheduled plans to refurbish this vessel (or her sister, Pacific Princess)?

Pacific Princess is going into some form of dry dock in May. A cruise ends in Vancouver May 3 and there are no cruises scheduled until later in the month.

  3. We have an adult daughter that, for various reasons, does not have a regular travel partner. We have asked her if she would like to cruise with us for an upcoming cruise. The only problem-None of us wants to take the "upper bunk". We have done this in the past with promises of who will take the bunk but it often turns out that someone else volunteers. I have read that Princess does have some rollaway beds on the ships-Have any of you used them and, if so, what types of cabins would they fit in? We have travelled in every category of cabin and just cannot imagine a rollaway in an inside. I called Princess and they said mini-suite and deluxe balcony are the only cabins that would hold a rollaway. Not that I don't believed every word I hear from Princess;) I just figured the experts are on this board. Thanks.

  4. They must have assigned a bunch of Balcony and better rooms on this April 23 sailing as I only can see about 26 available now. I am still unassigned in my OV guarantee.

    Terry

I would agree with your thoughts about assigned Balcony and better. IS was listed as guarantee yesterday and today there look to be 15 available. I found 37 Balconies yesterday and 11 today. Slight drop in OV from yesterday 13-9.

Certainly looks like they are setting up to have a "flash sale" for inside cabins. Let's see what the next few days bring-This is almost as fun as planning the cruise:p

  5. I think there are some itineraries that do not sell well - spring transatlantics are one of them. A friend was on the Ruby a few years ago and they had closed off the Plaza deck and some sections of other decks because it wasn't full.

I looked recently at the Royal TA in April and it is very open.

I have also seen this on TA's. On our last one, they closed off an entire deck (or at least one side) and were doing carpet replacement.

  6. Would you consider a cruise with about 20% (or more) of the cabins unsold, as being undersold? We are two months out from a cruise on the Pacific Princess and when I look at the cabins still available it looks 62 cabins are still available. A quick count shows a possible 275+/- cabins that could be sold? I would think there are going to be some great sales coming up;)

  7. Slightly different but on a cruise about 5 years ago, we had chatted with the Staff Captain during a meet and greet. On a lark, I invited him to join us for dinner. He said sure and he joined us, at our otherwise table for 8, a couple of evenings. I made sure I let the wait staff know he was coming. I can tell you we got some pretty good service those nights, although I think the waiter and assistant were plenty nervous.

As a side light, I understand that he has just been promoted to Captain and is just waiting to see which ship he will get.

  8. On the ONE cruise where I had remaining OBC I received a check from Princess for the amount that was left-around $40 if my memory serves me right;) In following other blogs on here about the same subject I see that my experience was not unusual. Some folks have suggested going to the Passenger Services Desk at the end of the cruise and that they have been given cash refund? I cannot vouch for that.

  9. I have to tell all how fast I got my shareholder credit. AT 1PM today, I faxed my Carnival shareholder information to Princess in Santa Clarita. I then put a copy in the mail and walked out to the mailbox. I should have saved the stamp! I just looked (1:45 PM) and the credit is already in my account for my cruise in April.:)

Before you ask, why fax and also mail- I am a suspenders and belt type of guy:p

    Just cannot get any faster.

    Thanks Princess!

  10. We are thinking about booking a suite for a September sailing to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We are looking at doing a 9 day Caribbean sailing on the CB. It's being sold as 1 cruise, but is a combination of a 4 day and a 5 day. Per the Princess website, the first night in a specialty restaurant for free is not applicable on a sailing of less than 6 nights. I'm curious about whether the perk will be extended to us, as we have booked the cruise as a single 9 day sailing. Does anyone have any experience with this on the shorter sailings now on the Ruby?

We were just on a 4 day coastal cruise on the Sapphire. We were given first night specialty restaurant choice for first night because of our being in a suite. In addition, top twenty most travelled were given specialty restaurant meals in lieu of Captain's luncheon. We had two dinners over the four night cruise. We were not in a suite for the second 4 days so had to settle for only one specialty dinner;)

    Still gained weight:p

  11. Amelia,

Can't believe this was your first Caribe balcony. We always select Caribe.Only ships that don't have these wonderful huge balconies are the little ones (Pacific etc) and the new Royal.

What size was your new TV's in cabin. People were saying that they were 40 inch. However this month on Caribe deck saw only lots of boxes with 32inch tv's.We were in a suite and ours wasn't being changed out yet.

We just got off-Mini suite had 40 inch TV's-Fun part; one remote-two TV's. If you tried to only turn on one TV you had to put remote to the edge. Then you had to remember to do the same to turn it off. Standing back and you would turn one off and the other on :p. We were in a suite the first four days and it had not gotten the new TV's yet. The installing crew said they would be done in 5 days (that was Monday) and then off to Australia to do the same to the Dawn.

  12. Since starting to receive this OBC, I have found that the credit shows up whenever I even start to inquire about a cruise. When requesting fares, among other things that get asked is "past Passenger" followed by Captains' Circle number. As soon as that is entered the military OBC appears in all quotes. I have found this to be true both with Princess quotes and the two on-line TA's I use.:)

  13. I had many of the same questions about TA commission. I then remembered that I was going to use the FCC's received for upcoming cruises that I had booked. I booked and talked 6 other members of my family into booking a couple of these "free" cruises. All booked thorough my usual TA. 4 of this group will probably not cruise again this year, so the TA should make full commission on their fares. Where he will lose out is the future cruise that we will be taking in April/May. At least by booking these and the future cruise through the same TA, whatever the total commission is, it will all go to him,

  14. On a very recent cruise on the Grand Princess we were assigned an ocean view room on Emerald Deck. When we started to unpack we found that the closet seemed to be much smaller on our previous cruises. We are Elite, so we do have some previous experience. It seemed to us that this particular closet was about 2/3 the space of our previous cabins.

Just wondering if anybody else has experienced or noticed this? Or did it have something to do with the location as we were at the front of the ship?

  15. I have worked at the terminal in San Francisco. Sometimes my duties took me to the security check point. Just like at the airport, carry on luggage goes through the screening (xray) machine. Folks that were bringing on pocket knives were routinely stopped and the knives taken. Their name was placed on the knife and it was stored in the pier security area. It did not go aboard the ship. I cannot tell if these knives were recollected when the ship returned as I never worked in the disembarkation area.

  16. How do interline fares compare to travel agent fares?

What I am seeing is some much lower fares on less desirable cabins i.e. inside, while the TA fares seem to be as good on more popular choices. I certainly have gotten a wide variety of answers. I know that my wife would hate to give up her "black card' and free internet.:D We may have to look for a short cruise to find out for ourselves;)

  17. Working for an airline or having a family member that does gives us the opportunity to use interline fares. Some of the fares are quite reasonable. MY question' What do you give up when you use these fares? would still get credit for days travelled; How about the various forms of OBC such as military, stockholder, FCC. Also do you lose the other benefits of being Elite such as free laundry, internet and minibar/

I figure that with the wide experience base that is here on CC somebody will have some experience. Thanks in advance

  18. OK, I work in San Francisco at the pier. Here is the procedure we use.

    1. when you arrive at the terminal there are reps curbside with radios, they will call for a wheelchair pusher. Generally they are there in 5-7 minutes.

    2. the pusher will take you to the "special assistance" check-in area where you will be checked in.

    3. the pusher will then take you to a waiting area very close to the check in area where you will wait for a ships crewmember to push you for the rest of the way, generally all the way to your stateroom.

    Disembakation:

    1. Both ships personnel and shoreside wheelchair pushers will be ON BOARD the ship. when your color is called they will push you to the baggage area and help find you luggage. If you need a porter they will get one for you, then push you to the buses or curbside for pick-up.

NOTE. You will not be able to stay in the chair and wait for your pickup as there are many people needing this service and only a limited number of wheelchairs, so, if you are having someone pick you up be sure to have them in the area close to the time your color is called.

DARN;) As a wheelchair pusher, who has worked with Ed. (Aaerobear) I can only say he beat me to the punch. And I so wanted to get credit for ano:)ther post

  19. What fun it has been to read through this site and think about all those past cruise:D

What do I miss? On some longer cruises the ship would spend more than a few hours in port. I remember over night stays in many Asian ports.

Also the newer, bigger ships are now forced to dock some distance from the visited city and it is possible to spend half your time getting to the city and the sights.:(

While Cunard Line still seperates passengers by dining room for the most part the First Class and Tourist seperations have been done away with.

The worst day cruising beats the best day working:)
