We did the underground tour and by purchasing it on line for just a few extra Euros it was the difference between a visit to the Colesseum and a proper tour. Going to the base of the stadium one gets to see how the gladiators were brought up to the stadium and how they lived. Up to the third level one gets to look over the stadium and the Palatine. For most Rome is a one visit city, don't short change yourself. The steps take a little bit of effort but we were in our mid sixties when we did the tour and achieved it with little issues

    Which tour did you book?

Yes, I’m aware of this. If lines are long getting up to Fira at the cable car, it may at least expedite the process of getting to Oia. I’m still debating walking down the steps to get back down to tender.

There's another factor you may want to consider: Boats to Oia usually starts at 9am (let me know if that's incorrect). So if you get off the cruise ship earlier, you may lose the advantage over the next ship by waiting for the boat. Again, my information may be wrong, but timing is important there.

Correct - taxi's will be a problem - one option might be a boat trip from the old port to Oia - then you'll also skip the possible long queue for the cable car.

But we still have to line up for the queue to come down from Fira via cable car. All the boat trips I know of only offer one way trip, and then they send you off to Fira.

Its not a taxi that takes you all over the island or anything like that, but, from my understanding, you can board near Akrotiri and it has stops to see black, red, and white beaches. You can get off and catch another “taxi” later if you wish at any of the stops.

Here’s some information on Trip Advisor (also has a link to their Facebook page):

Thanks. It seems that the availability of taxis can be a problem. Still thinking about renting a car, but I have not seem many examples.

I've read about a water taxi near Akrotiri that takes you to see black, red, and white beaches for 10 euro, and that is something of interest to us.

Where did you see the information? I am thinking of renting a car to minimize the risk of not being able to find a taxi in the peak season, but water taxi sounds interesting!

    Yes.

Ask your cabin steward for a few order forms which you fill in and hang it on your outside cabin door handle before you go to sleep.

It asks you what time you want delivery. It is in half hour sections eg 6.00-6.30am and for us they turn up 5 minutes before the earliest time on the list.

I usually give the waiter $2 cash tip and we get a phone call 5 minutes before delivery so we are ready for them but some people say they don't get a phone call before delivery.

    That's perfect. Thanks again!

On our Explorer cruise last month room service was available 24 hours and Windjammer opened at 6:30am on port days.

Cafe Promenade on deck 5 opened at 6am for light, snack type food like bake goods and sandwiches.

Great. Thank you! I have not thought of Cafe Promenade. Windjammer is on the opposite side of our cabin so it will be quite a run. 😄

  8. We will sail on the Explorer in the Mediterranean this summer and it's very port intensive. We'd like to get off the ship as early as possible, but would like to have breakfast first. If the ship docks at 7am, what's the best way to have breakfast taken care of? When will Windjammer open? And how early can we order room service? Thanks!

Yes Elafonisi beach is stunning if you are comfortable driving,  depending on time of year and how long in port?  It is quite a distance.

    Early June. 7am-7pm docking time.

Good advice above!  We love Chania, it is very pleasant and we also enjoyed Knossos but that is a very long day.  Depends on your interests and stamina.   I also wonder what time of year?  There are some lovely beaches near Chania.

Would you recommend renting a car and drive to different beaches. I heard about the pink beaches on the other side...

Does anyone here have experience with the Everglades Eco-Adventure With Airport Drop-Off (MIA) after the cruise?
I booked it and they recently pulled my flight departure time to 2:45. The tour says for flights after 3.
I'm looking for an answer on when this really drops off at the airport.

We did the tour two years ago. You should have plenty of time if you check in online, but you should double check with RCCL to see if they are firm on their policies.

We booked via the official site also but its very difficult to get tickets. You basically have to book right when the ticketing options open. If you can get tickets via the official site, that is the way to go. Otherwise you will be paying for the same tour from a private operator, marked up 3-4 times. The combo tour including the underground and belvedere is a very nice tour.

When do the ticketing options open?

There isn't any way to avoid the cable car back down to the tender dock, unless you want to walk. It took about an hour in line to get back down.

One hour line in the off-season? That's a lot! How long would it take to walk?
