  1. Many many years ago. I sailed down the Ulanga river. I can`t remember the name of my vessel. I met a nice woman named Rose Sayer. As I recall our cruise encountered some difficulties. Rose and I eventually were married aboard a German ship, the Louisa I believe.

    Thank you, Charlie Allnut

  3. First cruise was a 4 day LA-Ensenada and return on the Cunard Adventurer.

After hearing stories from my Aunt Lily of her sailings on the Leonardo DaVinci and the SS France, I was actually disappointed and not hooked first time outta the box.

On the other hand, my love of the ocean and boats and ships started in the early to mid 1950's when my Dad and Uncle would take me with the MGM Rod and Reel club down to San Diego and we would go on Bill Poole's Polarus for tuna fishing out on the 60 mile bank.

The Lido was a galley with a small grill plate and the overnight sleeping accommodations were a few rows of bunk beds below deck.

This boat was probably in the 100 foot range - best I recollect.

I loved being out on the ocean, the aromas, the fishing, the spray, and tossing leftover bait up to the gulls on the return.

Mom would take me on the Great White Steamship from Long Beach over to Catalina for day trips. I also loved the bigger boat. It took a couple of hours to cross and there was generally a Big Band on board (leftover from the forties) for entertainment and that was my introduction to the altosax.

And now you know the rest of the story! :)

Cunard Adventurer (1971-present) Delivered in 1971, Cunard Adventurer was one of a series of small, cruise-oriented vessels the line operated at that time. She operated for Cunard until 1977 when she was sold to Norwegian Caribbean Line and renamed Sunward II. She was sold to Epirotiki Line (Greece) as Triton in 1991 and then passed to the combined Royal Olympic Cruises fleet in 1995. Following the collapse of Royal Olympic, Triton was sold to Louis Hellenic Cruises at public auction in 2005 who renamed her "Coral". She is currently sailing for Louis under that name.

Thanks for that pic, Copper. So much nicer than that faded postcard I found on Simplon Postcards.

She looks real nice as the Coral. (Probably better service, too.) :)

I'd been looking for a better pic off-and-on today cuz I figured you would pass this ship as I had already posted the postcard. So I was surprised and delighted you found something better.

  7. What was your first cruise ship? What cruise line, the year and the itinerary? (if you remember;) ) Did it get you hooked?

Ours was Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's m/s Viking Serenade, a converted car ferry, back in NOV 1991, a 3-day L.A. - Catalina Island - Esenada, Mexico - L.A. cruise. Never forget our first impressions - we were hooked from that day on!

  9. Wow, this is going to be fun. First cruise ship was the Assure Sea's, have no idea if that was the ships name or the cruise lines name. I'm guessing it was the ship's name. I'm sure someone else will know. It was a three day like yours, down to Ensenada. Was not impressed at all, it was then years later when my DH gave us a Christmas present of a cruise to Alaska during August of 1995 on the Ryndam, it was only 6 months old, in a suite. Well, as they say, the rest is history, 35 cruises, 23 with Hal.

    Hi Melodie,

I am looking at a photo of me and my Mom from 1981 on the Western Cruise Lines S.S. Azure Seas. Would that be the same ship?

  11. Daniel,

Where did you find the interline rate?? We are interline customers too and looking for a hotel night for 4/28/06 before our cruise. Thanks for your help.:)

    Hi Gloria and Terry,

Sometimes I just call a hotel direct to inquire bout interline rates. In this case, I went to the hotel's website

    http://wynres.wyndham.com/pls/wss/html_ui_search.avs?ref=2453746215849&ses=5877772EFBABE24C9B1B9F7983003902EC8A24225E916A6A&pro=TPAHI&rat=&cor=&grp=&arr=&dep=&rms=&adu=&chi=&lnm=&err= (gosh, that's a long URL)

clicked "contact us" and then clicked "email us" and inquired about what interline rate they could offer me for the dates needed and, of course, advised them which airline I work for.

Response was by email and you just go from there. I just always have to remember to get my airline ID badge out of the car and take it with me for check-in.

    Cheers,

    Daniel

  12. Hi Ken,

First, thanks for the info about Tropicana Field. I'll check it out if there are any shuttles.

I've been offered a very attractive interline rate at the Wyndham Harbor Island. Looks like it's much closer to the cruise terminal than the Wyndham Westshore. Is this true? Any negatives about the Wyndam Harbor Island? Any reasons why this would not be a better choice than the Wyndham Westshore? Thanks in advance.

  13. Hi. Great thread and I am now over saturated with info. I am booked solo on the Ryndam 16April06 for the Panama Canal cruise and intend to arrive on 14April. Assuming I stay somewhere in the airport, cruise terminal or Ybor City area, how far is it and how would I get to Tropicana Field for a Devil Ray game without renting a car? Yes, I checked and they are in town playing the Royals. Appreciate any help. Thanks.
