Christmas Eve found us up in the High Desert to see what Pastor Dan and his staff had put together. Our son’s Christmas message was an inspirational reminder to never lose the ability to view the world through the eyes of a child, without the cynicism and pessimism that the harsh realities of adulting can infect us with. To me, that loss of that perspective is the root of virtually all the problems in the world. If you forget how to see the beauty around you, all you see is the ugly. A fantastic version of The Little Drummer Boy was the highlight for me, though I had to smile at having everyone sing Happy Birthday to Jesus and blow out their candles at the end of the service as a clever way to punctuate the message of the day.

    Merry, Merry!

I was thrilled to learn we'd have our coldest Christmas likely in forever, at least in the last 30 years...don't get too many chances to enjoy cold down here in S. Florida.  Christmas Eve was overcast and grey, so not the best light, but with a high temp of 54 I had a wonderful 8 mile walk through the levees of the western Wellington wetlands spots, then over to my local wetlands grounds - so amazing to walk 10 miles and come home without a drop of sweat!

Unfortunately, Christmas Day which had an even-lower high temp of only 47, was constant drizzle and rain, as was the Monday holiday at 52 and constant, all-day rain - so Christmas Eve was the only day I was able to get out and shoot:

A usually very secretive bird, this sora came out in the open as I passed by:

Another sneaky little bird that let me get pretty close without running and hiding - a male least bittern:

I have seen both at Wakodahatchee, a few years ago.  Both are plentiful, but do not like to be out in sight.  As always, great shots!

  3. I received an email this morning for this promotion.

I haven't been looking for cruises for a few years, and always believed that most promotions ended up with the same price.  Not surprised to see that still holds true!

I priced three cruises this week, online and through my LARGE online TA.  Imagine my surprise when I repriced them this morning under this new promotion.  The prices were EXACTLY the same.  Full disclosure, pricing three cruises is not a large enough sample, but it sure is an indication pricing gimmicks are still the same.

    Happy Cruising!

I was once again able to head up to the one wetland area open in my county - though I can't understand why they can't just open them all...I was there for 3 hours and saw not one single other person.  Last week only one other person was there.  The simple fact is, virus or not, very few hardy souls would even consider walking around in a swamp in the middle of the afternoon in 96 degrees and humidity exceeding 85%...social distancing is about as effortless as can be!

I just read that they are cooling themselves by catching what little breeze there may be.

Our back yard garden is beginning to peak and we are struggling to find new ways to incorporate tomatoes into soups, salads, snacks and just about every meal. Unlike a lot of the first time "quarantine gardens", we have been planting something or other for most of the last decade. As stated, the tomatoes are doing well and our grape vines are producing small, sweet grapes after years of teasing us with sour little pellets. The zucchini are being harvested early to avoid the previous year’s 8-lb. behemoths with what looked like watermelon seeds in them. We only planted a few cucumbers and they are providing salad components reliably. Maybe a few more cucumbers for pickles next year and cut back on tomatoes...unless the tomato ice cream turns out well.

    Tomato Jam?

    BBQ Sauce?

    Bolognese / Maranara?

Bombay Sapphire, vermouth in and out, lemon twist.  Glass of ice water on the side.

Large Martini glass please, if you don't have one, you might as well start the second one right now.

After we received all of our credits to our BofA credit card I called on June 24 and asked if the credit balance could be transferred to our checking account.  Of course the representative said.  Expect the transfer in 3-5 business days.  After the July 4 holiday I called again and asked about it.  It had been 8 business days not counting the Friday holiday.  I was assured it would be transferred the next day.  Now, 11 days since the first call still no transfer.  No way to treat a long time customer, especially a Platinum Honors customer.

What is a platinum honors customer?

DW tries to use same logic on me.  I believe in mark to market.  Value of RCL is what I can buy or sell it at right now.  Market says that $750MM is gone to money heaven.

My investments took a significant hit.  I did not sell them, and the value has mostly returned.  So, I did not lose the big hit, as there was no sale.

I do get your point, but if a long term holder, you have a different perspective.  I have no knowledge of the pension's investment strategy.

The Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) invested 1 Billion into RCL last year.

Lost about $750 million so far. Luckily for Pensioners that was only

a small portion of our fund. CPP is somewhat like Social Security in USA.

We pay into it when we work but it's definitely not enough to survive on

if it's you only source of money.

Unless they sold the investment, they haven't lost anything, yet.

Central Florida began to open up last week, so I grabbed my gear and headed (May 7th) to the Orlando Wetlands.  When I pulled into the parking lot at 6:30AM there was only one other car there.  When I left severals hours later there where 26 cars in the parking lot. Proving people wanted to get out of isolation.  The place is so large and spread out that I passed only six people, and was able to socially-distance myself from them.

Lake Apopka?  Have they reopened the drive to portable bird blinds (cars)?
