  1. I would love a larger ship and more options from Boston. I can almost walk to the dock from my office in the Seaport area. New hotels and restaurants are opening all the time so visitors would be well taken care of too.

I love seeing the Dawn every Friday morning and wishing I was boarding instead of going to work! A 10 day with Bermuda and other islands, or Canada/New England without having to go to NYC would be amazing.

  2. We are considering buying spa passes on our next Gem cruise so I'm trying to find Youtube videos and pictures on boards to get the details.

From what I understand the Jacuzzi are located separately in the men and women locker rooms. Is this right?

    Any other amenities are separate?

There is one shared thermal pool, one big hot tub, and smaller jacuzzi for one person tubs in the separate areas. The showers and lockers are separate as are the saunas. There is one shared steam room but it is only big enough for one person at a time as I recall. The heated loungers and the padded loungers with the forward view are all shared as well. I just paid $179 for the Epic but it does have a larger spa.

  3. There are plenty of small tables that are very comfortable for one. I had a gorgeous water view at Le Bistro. My Teppanyaki table had a varied group of friendly people and I had a great time there. Everyone is minding their own business, enjoying their dinners and not staring at the "table for one". Go and enjoy!

  4. I spent time almost every day in the Gem spa. I found out that I love a dry sauna, which I had never used, enjoyed the heated loungers, the less crowded hot tub and mostly the peace and quiet. There are also more comfortable showers than in many of the cabins. I made sure I got my money's worth from the spa.

Oh, I loved it so much I have already purchased my pass for the Epic spa. I chose the Epic for my next cruise based on photos of their spa!

  5. what do you have to do to get on a sweepstakes mailing list? i dont get a lot of email from them. maybe since i booked in FEB they dont see the need?

and i still never got my 'no water' email either..sigh

I signed up for email from NCL when I first started shopping for my last cruise. I was assigned a PCC who emails me weekly with "specials" but never answered me when I emailed her about solo rates. I booked with an online agency and generally ignore the emails. You might want to signup when the email offer pops up on NCL.com if you want to see what they are offering. My last email included $100 "holiday cash" on certain cruises. I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere.

  6. Why would someone traveling w/o kids go on vacation during summer break?

Kids can be awful, but your issue is like going to Disneyworld at Christmas and being surprised by all the kids.

Maybe they are teachers and have the same break? No matter how many kids are there, that level of bad behavior should not be expected or tolerated, especially at those prices.

  7. I am sailing on getaway departing nov 20. Yesterday, I spoke with representative on concierge desk and asked about Harvest Caye. She had no information at all as to when cabanas will be available for sale. I did notice that there have been a few more excursions added.

Disney cruise line charges $500 for their cabanas which are not quite the same as what I have read about harvest Caye but somewhat similar. I am thinking that the harvest Caye cabanas will be $500 plus.

The cabanas on Great Stirrup Caye for my November Epic cruise are $449 and $499. I would expect these new ones on Harvest Caye to be at least that much.

  8. I just got off the Escape a couple weeks ago, Margaritaville was always dead. Why would anybody pay extra for a hamburger on a cruise when you can eat prime rib for free?

It's a shame Flamingo is going away on Getaway, I've been on Getaway 3 times in the past and Flamingo was always very popular at both breakfast and lunch. This plan is going to backfire on NCL, I hope they realize it soon.

Unfortunately NCL seems to be "all in" with Margaritaville. I got an email from NCL yesterday for a sweepstakes and all the prizes are things like coolers, mugs, beach towels, all with the Margaritaville logo. There was nothing at all in the email about cruises!

  9. My 12/17 sailing had it available last week - took the 7:15. I am curious what people are choosing for st Thomas- as well- I might do a St. John one as i did Magen's bay last time

I am doing the Kon Tiki beach trip this time. I took the ferry to St. John last time I was there. It was a great day. The beach is all national park land so it is pristine. Gorgeous place!

Does anyone know if there is a way to get to Jost Van Dyke other than by catamaran? I have a minor mobility issue that makes sitting on a cat boat difficult.

  10. Well, for one thing, it may be a USPH violation, regardless of the design of your water bottle. This is not a cruise line idea, it is mandated to them. Now, I say, it may be, because of a couple of things. One, is there a sign that states no refilling of glasses or bottles? If so, then the machine is considered by USPH to be a contact type dispenser, so no refilling allowed, and the lines have to abide by this so that when the inspectors come onboard and witness a meal service, the crew doesn't allow it out of habit. Non-contact type of dispensers, where your container is not used to depress a dispensing lever, are allowed by USPH to refill beverage containers. It is not only the spout that can transmit germs, but the sides of the container contacting the dispensing lever.

Thank you for explaining in a factual and undramatic way. I get it and I will follow the rules!

  11. Thanks everyone! I booked Le Bistro for my birthday on the first night and chose Cagney's. I can always add La Cuchina if I hear good things on the ship. It only took a few minutes to book my spa pass, all of my shows and dinners. Happy to report the option to just book for one was working this time too.

  12. I'm not trying to be difficult, I just really don't understand this issue. I have a plastic water bottle with a removable top. The part I drink out of comes off and leaves a large opening for ice and refilling with water. Once I have unscrewed the "nasty mouth part" what is the problem with holding the bottle under the water or iced tea dispenser? No part of the bottle touches the spigot. I'm more worried about germs from other people's hands pushing the various drink buttons.

On my last cruise I dutifully filled a small glass over and over which always created a line behind me.

  13. Tonight is my 90th day so I can book my specialty dinners. I have four so have chosen the Cirque dinner and Teppanyaki.

On the Gem, I had a wonderful first night meal at Le Bistro with excellent food and service. The waitstaff at La Cucina didn't quite know what to do with a solo diner and the food was "disappointing". Now the menus have changed and the lamb chops are gone from Le Bistro but they do have them at La Cucina.

I know food is totally subjective and who knows what changes will happen between now and November, but can anyone who has been on the Epic since the menu changes comment? Has La Cucina improved? Is Le Bistro still good?

I enjoyed my steak at Cagney's but got a runaround over my sides and the portions were tiny. Not sure I want to do that again, but if I do, is it better to book Cirque last and just pay for it?

    Any help appreciated.

  14. I may be completely wrong but my understanding is that it will be for suite \ Haven guests..... so the cost will be substantial to enjoy for 5 hours (because you have to factor in the suite / haven cost)

I really enjoyed the lagoon area so have been following this closely. They have stated that the new lagoon area will be for suite/haven guests and those purchasing spa treatments on the island. I am holding out hope that this is a different area on another part of the island, but in reality it is likely another improvement that will price out most of us (well, me at least).

  15. The lagoon area bbq was open for my Gem cruise last August. It was a cloudy day and tendering was delayed for a rain storm but I had lunch there. I have a bad feeling that this will all be a moot point after they finish upgrading. It looks like that area will be for suite guests and those who buy a beach spa treatment. That is out of my league $$$$.

  16. The ShoreEx for my November cruise have been trickling in for the last few months. They are still not all up there from what I can tell from past reviews of the ports. I like to have my plans made as early as possible so I can make other arrangements if the places I want to go are not offered.

  17. When we took our Alaska trip in 2012 the flights were very expensive because they were far from our home and when added to the price of the cruise made this trip really need to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip since it would be hard to afford to repeat it. I would have been devastated if they had cancelled Skagway or Glacier Bay which were my favorite parts of the trip. If they have repairs to do to the ship they need to make them on their own time not charge customers for a cruise experience that they are unable to deliver!

This issue is making me reconsider my choices for next summer. I will need to fly from Boston and pay the solo supplement. Alaska is a dream trip for me but the possibility of something like this happening is disappointing. I know to always expect the unexpected and to roll with it. But am I somewhat safe to assume this doesn't happen very often?

My interpretation of this: If you buy $250, that full amount goes fully towards your next cruise as a deposit PLUS you get a $100 OBC to be used fit your current cruise.

If you buy $500, that goes fully towards your next cruise PLUS you get $250 OBC this time to use.

You can't buy this unless you're onboard.

BUT...if you don't spend the OBC is just reduces the total cost on your final bill to $150 for one or $250 for two, etc. There is no need to spend it onboard.
