Where am I?  Up too early having to go to work.  Where have you been, MKing?  I thought maybe you and the Mrs. had gone on your planned lobster run to the North and decided to stay.

Sherri, I had to think about it but Dawn and Star balcony category have max 3 people.  Dawn had major refurb couple years back but as a rule the couch likely size as MKing posted.

Do you have a room number we can try to check?

Pix below was from one of sister/sibling ships, the Jewel from 2011 - a bit old/outdated as the interior deco has been upgraded since (we're on her again not long ago, again ...)

It should give you a good & accurate visual for the space & layout for the thin "couch" - convertible sleeper sofa/day bed.  Slightly wider than a typical twin bed at 38" or 39" wide but definitely not a full size bed - I would estimate it to be roughly about 43" or 44" in width, about the size of our futon sofa/bed in our guest/home office.

Thanks so much! We ended up speaking with the Cruise Next consultant and it is 45 inches wide. This will be our smallest couch ever on a cruise, but a pretty port intensive cruise so won’t be a lot of lounging. Wanted a Club Balcony but they were only available on deck 11 which apparently is very risky ‘noise’ wise. And we are not good with noise. 😬

The room also included a weird sofa bed as the sleeping arrangement for the third occupant. This was not the type where the bed folds into the sofa structure but more like a folded up, two piece mattress setup you had to unfold and where the sleeping area laid flat on the floor, not raised. It reminded me of those toddler seats that unfolded into a sleep mat my DD used to have at a certain age. But I found that even those mats were softer than this bed since this one was STIFF! And I do mean stiff. As in “if I slept one night on it I would spend the rest of the cruise in pain” stiff. I can’t imagine a grown adult spending too much time sleeping on a thing like this. And I’m a firm mattress kind of guy but even that was too much for me. Do they put like a foam topper over this or something like that?

By any chance do you know how wide this mini-couch actually is??

  3. Hi All,

We are arriving a couple days prior to our cruise on the NCL POA. Hubby would like to rent a JEEP Wrangler at the airport. BUT we own a Jeep so he wants to drive one of the new models. BUT we called the rental places at the airport and nobody knew what model Jeep Wranglers they are renting out.

Has anyone rented a JEEP Wrangler from the Honolulu airport recently? Can you tell us the model and from which rental company?

    Thanks!

Yes those indeed seem pricey.  I can't figure out the authentic taste of Maui one--not sure where you go on that one. But Maui Brewing is just ok, it's not what I would call a highlight. The second one is a complete ripoff.  I've been to Ocean Vodka (took the tour), Kula botanical gardens and the lavender farm on land vacations.  You could easily see all of those places (as well as other upcountry sites) yourself if you rented a car and it would be much less and you would be on our own time.  I know the Ocean Vodka tour is like $12, it's $10 to get into the gardens and while there is a $12 guided tour for the lavender farm , you can pay $3 and tour the grounds on your own for free.  Not sure where the meal is but there are some great places to eat upcountry with great food and nice views.

That being said, upcountry is beautiful, and those are all nice stops with beautiful grounds.  Seeing those places and having lunch would make for a nice day, especially day 2 and if you do it through NCL you don't have to worry about driving or making it back to the ship.  But yikes $200 just seems really ridiculous.

Thanks so much for your tips and suggestions. Our sailing is on 4/6/19. SOON!!!

Feels like the smartest thing is to rent a car. Do you recall how close the rental cars are to the pier?

Can you recommend any restaurants that are considered “must try”?

Check out Rickys Tours in Hilo

    www.rickystourshawaii.com

We took his wonderful tour a few years ago and have already booked him for our returning day in Hilo on the POA

His tour is called the Combination Hilo and Volcano National Park Tour.

I just noticed that this post was originally from a few years ago. It's up to date, in case someone needs it now.

Thank you for your post. Do you have an idea what they charge per person for this tour? We will be on the POA early April.

There are no themes.  It is the most un-cruise-like cruise ever.  It's about getting from here to there.  Being on board is secondary.  DH bought a Hawaiian shirt pre-cruise but there was not an abundance of festive attire.

Thank you, Trish1c. Appreciate your input and was exactly what I was sort of thinking. And needed the confirmation!

  7. Hi,

We are going to be on the POA at the beginning of April. Started to wonder if we would “need” to have any sort of Hawaiian attire? Last time we sailed to HI it was on HA and of course we had the Dining Room dinners that had various “dress up” themes, and I bought Hawaiian tops while on shore for the ship board fun. BUT being that POA really doesn’t have the “themed events” as far as I know... will there be any real reason to pack something festive and Hawaiian to wear?? Any past POA sailers with advise? 🌺🌸🌝

    Thanks,

    Sherri (and George)

We are doing a pre cruise stay on Waikiki and when we disembark our flight isn't until 7.  We are traveling with another couple.  So I rented a mini van for each day in Honolulu so that we can do what ever we want to do and not worry about luggage.  This is allowing us to do Pearl Harbor the morning of embarkation.  We booked through Hawaii Discount Rentals and got Alamo and I think it is $53.00 including all taxes/charges.

We did the Pearl Harbor excursion when we were last in HI with Holland America. What an amazing, sobering and touching exhibit they have. Stick a tissue or two in your pockets.

We had rented a Mustang Convertible last time (just the two of us - celebrating our 30th anniversary...now we will be celebrating our 42nd anniversary just a few months off!) and drove the coast and had fun exploring on our own. So we seriously don’t know HOW we want to spend our free time this time around.

Well I have done some searching since I didn't get an answer and it appears 9:30/10 am.  Hubby wants to get to the ship as soon as possible and just use the day to explore the ship and have it as what will essentially be our only sea day.  So we may end up doing just that although I haven't ruled out exploring downtown and doing the Iolani Palace tour first.  If not, we will most likely do it after disembarking.

You can also check in, store your bags and disembark to go to the swap meet or wherever.  Coming back to the ship, there is apparently a separate line for those who have already checked in, you don't have to stand in line again.

Thank you for following up! That is wonderful news. Now to decide WHAT we would want to do with our “city time”. We took the “free” airfare option, so we don’t know exactly what time we will need to get to the airport to fly home.

    Cross-post from NCL board

Does anyone know how early we can give our bags to the porters on POA?  I was thinking of maybe doing a downtown tour before embarking but we would need to be free of luggage.  I thought I read somewhere that we won't be allowed to board until noon, is that correct? This will help me determine if we need to wait and do downtown Honolulu after we disembark to kill time or if I will need to plan something else.  TIA.

I am wondering the same thing. Wondering if we’d have time to go check out the Flea Market that keeps being mentioned.

  11. We took Dr. Wagner's Honey Island Swamp Tour but I no longer see it listed on Trip Advisor. There are several others that get good reviews. I wouldn't recommend an airboat tour though. They are VERY loud. You probably won't see alligators this time of year but the swamp is interesting either way. Any of the tour companies should pick up and drop off at your hotel. Also, check Eric "Big E" Airport Transportation Service on Trip Advisor. They might pick up at the cruise dock, take you on a city tour, and drop you off at the airport.

Thanks for the additional input. Post cruise we will be making a beeline to the airport as we have a fairly early flight back to San Diego. So our siteseeing will be Thursday-Saturday prior to boarding.

    Found this on TripAdvisor. THANKS!
