  1. I thought the cruise was covered as a bundle. I did speak to a insure my trip.rep 2 months ago who of course thought my flights would be reimbursed if my cruise was canceled.

I can't get to Canada if my cruise doesn't take me there.

I've used my insurance through my credit cards to get money back much more than I've used my Nationwide policies on my last two cruises.

I am in a similar situation. Booked Alaska cruise for June that was cancelled by Royal Caribbean. Booked airfare separately through American. Requested refund for cruise. I was able to cancel hotels and excursions booked on my own without penalty. American Airlines COVID special cancellation policy is currently running through the end of May.

I had purchased Nationwide Cruise insurance to cover the entire trip through insuremytrip.  I called Nationwide travel insurance today regarding my airfare options. . They said no coverage for COVID, unless I am specifically ordered to quarantine by my doctor. Shelter in place, pandemic, cancelled cruise, etc. are not covered.  No recourse, unless I have a medical reason to cancel.

I inquired about a claim for itinerary change, which has to occur before the cruise according to the policy. No coverage for this either, as the cruise has to take place in order to make a claim.

Asked about refunding for the cost of the insurance policy. They are not offering refunds, but recommended I contact insuremytrip. Insuremytrip lists on their website policies are non-refundable after the initial review period.

My only recourse will be through the airlines. They have to have at least a 61 minute change or a cancelled flight, in order to get a refund.  I guess I'll wait and see and request a change voucher closer to time of the trip.

Granted, I've usually just purchased the cruise insurance in case of cancellation for medical or medical evacuation in a foreign country, but cruise insurance has been a disappointment in this case!

Oh No I purchased my policy last June but I don't think that's going to make a difference.

I was hoping that I could get my money back on my flights. I did not want to take vouchers.

  3. I just heard that manufacturing plants are temporary closing in the USA and Canada this might impact people's ability to purchase cruises in the future.

I am worried that the big Cruise Lines won't make it. I told myself I was going to buy the stock if it went below 10 but I just don't know anymore.

They did bounce back after the recession.

For me it is all about survival.  Your reasoning is all very sound and why I am about to pull the trigger.  I am waiting to see what the next 2 weeks bring and how RCI seems to be handling things.  If I can get the investor bennies and cash the shares in a couple of decades later I am confident this is a sound plan.  That all hinges on if they survive.

Thinking about looking into Disney as well.  Anyone ahead of me on that?

I'm buying Disney. I still haven't pulled the trigger on RCL I'm waiting for it to go down in the teens.

I bought at 14.97 last week. This is before they announced halting cruises. I thought it would drop more after the announcement. Waiting to buy. More for the OBC than an investment. However we did buy some NCL when is was at 8 and some change last week. Disney is also taking a big hit right now.

I got Disney at a great price. I thought the cruise stocks would tank today but they keep going up. I will probably buy if they go lower.

The US government could provide temporary or permanent relief to allow foreign flagged passenger vessels to operate between US ports.  Presumably this let Alaska cruises leave from and return to Seattle with no Canadian stops.  Not sure if that is something that could be done under executive authority, or require Congressional action.

It can be done but not sure if it needs Congressional approval. This might be X Back-up Plan. I can see Donald allowing it.

If you are talking about an Alaska cruise in June, and all Canadian ports are closed until July, there is no choice except for the cruiseline to cancel your cruise. If you have insurance, why would you lose money on the flight or hotel? Insurance kicks in when the cruise is canceled by the cruiseline.

When I called Nationwide they said that depending on the reason for my cruise being cancelled I might not get the money back on my airplane tickets. My flight wasn't canceled.  Trip Interruption pays if you are on the way to or from  your destination.

I can't get to Vancouver where I fly home from because my cruise never left Alaska. That should be a reason for me to get my money back on that leg of the trip.

An agent at insure my trip where I bought my policy said that I would be covered for the cancelled tickets.

As of today, they are still taking new bookings for the May 21st  cruise from Vancouver.

They are still taking bookings for my June 12 cruise. I think that's shady. Because most likely X knows the itinerary is going to be changed or cancelled. Pax will have to deal with the hotel and airplane costs that they will probably never use.

I have a May 17 Alaska sailing that leaves from Vancouver. My TA says it is still active and advises that I wait before making any changes. On their Instagram page, Celebrity responded to another scheduled Alaska passenger saying they understand the Canadian ports are closed and they are working on a Plan B. Details to come. I’m going to sit it out and see what happens.

I wouldn't be surprised if the US puts a temporary halt on the PVSA so foreign ships can sail from Seattle to Alaska without stopping in a foreign port.. Maybe X know something that the public doesn't.

Will travel insurance cover the extra money for airline tickets out of Santiago? Or will they reject it because it is pandemic related?

It depends on the policy.  Some policies exclude pandemics. If it didn't exclude pandemics then yes it should cover the cost to change the airline ticket. if the policy doesn't have trip Interruption then I'm not sure.

Pretty much all airlines right now offer you a refund or stored airline credit so that's safe.

As far as the hotels are concerned that pretty much applies as well with all chain hotels. If individual properties that don't belong to a chain they might waive it. I'd give Ultimate Rewards a call and check.

Sadly United is only offering a refund or a waive on change fees for flights up until April.

Usually when using Chase UR points for example I get a receipt that shows a monetary value and then the amount of the points so you should be able to claim that back from insurance if your policy covers it.

Many "non-ref" flights and hotels have a waiver and the carrier will refund you anyway. Did you book a chain hotel?

Thank you for the helpful info. It was a Chase Sapphire  card that was used for to purchase the hotel & a flight.

  13. My cruise is June 12. I know many of you want to go on this cruise but I'm hoping the ports don't open early. I want my money back because of the stress. We will lose money on our flights and the money we paid for our travel insurance.

The travel insurance should pay out on our non-refundable hotel but we used some credit card points to pay for the hotel so we're going to lose out on the full cost.

There's a chance my work could make me self quarantine after this Cruise.

Similar situation - but my cruise was next week and already canceled.  The tricky part is American is waiving change fees if you travel before the end of year.  We have $3,000 in airfare and no plans to use it this year.  Even if we end up using some, we likely won't use it all.  So it is likely we will have a loss eventually (at end of year) - if so it would be at least $600-800 in change fees, if not the whole ticket.

No idea how to handle this.  I've been trying to contact Nationwide - but wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge (understanding that ultimately it will be up to what Nationwide says).....

    Mike

Please post what happens if you talk to Nationwide. Some of our flights were bought with credit card points.. Sadly Travel insurance does not pay out on points.

I think the big things I have learned are

    1. Pay the extra to book refundable accommodation

    3. Keep non refundable expenses to a minimum

    3. Use 1 credit card for 1 trip

    4.expect the unexpected!

I've learned to book air through the cruise lines. I'm not sure if my Travel insurance will cover my plane tickets if X cancels my cruise.

With all Canadian ports closed until July 1st, many more will be coming.  Not sure there will even be an Alaska season.  We were set to sail May 28th to Canada and New England and just cancelled.  Interestingly, Celebrity still has the cruise on their website.  You can get a great price for this 9 day cruise to nowhere,

I guess someone could book it and get a 125% FCC when X cancel it.

My June Alaska cruise is showing as available.

  17. I'm wondering if it will still go into dry dock because of all the financial hits MSC has been taking because of the virus. I have a cruise booked on the Divina for next January. I was really excited because I was going on soon after Dry Dock. Not sure what MSC was going to for it 😂.

    Yes,,,,

Unless the airline gives you a credit to be used towards a future flight when you cancel the flights. Insurance isn't going to pay out unless there is a financial loss. A future flight credit is not a financial loss in their eyes.

Thank you. it's a waiting game because X is probably going to wait to cancel the cruise. Unfortunately this will give the airlines time to offer the credit as good will to customers. Do I have to accept the credit?

I can always use the credit to apply to Future flights that I am taking in January.

I am hoping that I could take a cruise in October of this year but I'm not sure if the crisis will be over by that time.

  19. Hi all.

Canada closed their ports until July 1st so it looks like celebrity will have no choice to cancel my Alaska cruise that is sailing in June.

Now I know why I should have picked my flights through celebrity since I would not have to pay anything since X cancelled the cruise.

I have flights through United to Alaska and Air Canada coming home from Vancouver. My question is will I be able to put a claim in for the flight costs through my travel nsurance.

I had called Nationwide and insure my trip before the cancellation about this question and I got different answers. No one could give me a definitive answer. I would call it a win even if my policy only paid the change fees.

Thanks for any help on this issue.

Because they have not gotten to dealing with Alaska yet.

Think if your cruise is in April sitting back over the weekend and see what happens in the next few days.

What we do know is that there are more cancellations and changes to come.

As a guess would think Alaska cancellations come soon. At least some European cancellations follow. Some cruises are cruises to nowhere and X needs a bit of time to sort those.

Think of it this way. A new pax books this trip. Now books non refundable airfare. That would suck.

I'm not upset that X hasn't figured out a plan for notifying AK pax.  They need to pull cruises for sale that pax can't go on. That is Not hard for IT to do.
