  1. I guess this might be more geared towards though who have been on the Royal since there are no oceanview cabins.

How likely is it that you will get an upgrade offer after booking an inside cabin to go to a balcony cabin, and what has the price range been?

  2. Everyone here nailed it...they can and assume that they are losing $$ on drinks, excursions, some dining, spa treatments, and gambling. I don't know the exact numbers on this, but I would bet that if all cruises offered a percentage of indoor cabins with no single supplement  that they will actually make more than to not have any at all. NCL took notice of this, and I think Princess did too (I saw that there are a decent amount of cruises now with them where the single supplement isn't that bad).

  3. There was a deal on NCL to Alaska that leaves today out of Vancouver that was still advertised last night (the 72 hour thing is a myth...). It would have been  $553 for 7 nights for an interior cabin on the sailaway rate. This includes taxes and fees. Only reason I couldn't take it was because my mother had an injury and the doctor required more bed rest than we thought =/  . I was watching that particular cruise for the last month or so and saw the price fluctuate between $299-$8something before taxes.

With the CruiseNext promo I would have gotten the cruise ridiculously cheap since I have 2 vouchers ($500 vouchers that I paid $270 for so saving me $230). $553-$230=$323 making the cruise $46 a night not include gratuities.

I'm hoping to do the sailing on 7/29. Right now it's at $802 including taxes and fees which is a fair price, but I'm a risk taker and waiting for it to drop more. I did buy from here 2 of the CruiseNext vouchers so I'm hoping by 6/30 I will see the price drop. I'm annoyed because on Friday I got an email from a salesman from NCL. I emailed if they could do the later sailing at the same price and they said yes and to call them. I call and it's a different story and they wanted over $1400 lol. I called the guy out on it saying I'm not 75 years old and that I know how to use the internet. He said I am paying for a personalized experience. I don't give a **** if it's personalized. I can personalize my cruise myself. Blocked his number.

If I bought now it would be $802-$230=$572 so $81 a night a difference of $249. Again hopefully I can get it by 6/30 otherwise I will hold on 2 the vouchers for another promo.

In any case I could get a Princess cruise that's more high end with the same ports (except debarking from Whittier instead of Seward) for less than $900.

  4. Honestly none of the cruises that seemed geared for young people are the higher end ones. I know you haven't been on here in almost a year but maybe you are lerking. I'm similar to you. I want to meet people my age but I would like something more high end. I found it's one or the other.

  5. In my experience if you are looking to feel a sense of community with single cruisers you need to pay a premium to go with a group that is for singles.

People here mentioned NCL. I typically go with NCL simply due to the price (I love bargains). That said, not every ship is the same. I would assume the ships that have the studio cabins would be the easiest to meet singles since they do have a coordinator for singles. I myself have not been on the ships that have studio cabins but I have been on other NCL ships. I went on the Jewel many years ago when I was 21 and in college. There were definitely a lot of young single people, but I only found them in the club at night (not really my scene but if you want to meet people that are young and single that's your best bet). A couple of years ago at  31 I went on the Sun for an Alaskan cruise. These typically do attract older people and don't have a party atmosphere. That said, I found the age range was very mixed. As far as singles I didn't meet that many. They advertised in the daily a solo meet. I went and there wasn't a single person there. A few days into the cruise I went into the hot tub and I met 2 single guys who came together. They asked me why I didn't go to the solo meet. I told them what happened and they said that there were some people there but that there was no coordinator for it so there really wasn't a group. One of the guys normally does the studio cabin and says typically there is a solo coordinator. I've met people on most cruises I went to. I went on a date off the ship with one (we lived within an hour of each other), and I "hooked up" with one of the guys I met in Alaska and we talked pretty frequently for over a year after the cruise. I later found out he died 😞

  6. I think people on this forum are using the words "singles' cruise" incorrectly. To me a singles cruise means it's a chartered ship with a singles group, or an organizer planned there to be an arranged singles trip. I've gone on 1 trip solo that was designated as a singles cruise. I also later went on 1 cruise where there was a special rate from an organizer in my town of singles under 40. Ironically, I met someone on the non singles cruise, but met no one on the singles cruise.

Most of the people on this forum are simply going solo.

  7. Other than trekking at Mendenall, do you get closer to it by taking a kayaking tour (I'm solo and for safety reasons would prefer a tour), the canoe tour, or the raft tour? If it's no difference as far as distance, I prefer the float tour our of shear laziness.

Yeah really! I wish Cruise Critic had a "Wiki" function where anyone could edit information in a post on the first page. I've seen this on some other forums and it's super useful when you have a bunch of people contributing different data points.

I think what happens is most of the posts on here are just comments instead of actually responding to the original post. I'm not going to read 138 pages of comments where most of it doesn't address what was specifically said by the OP. I have this issue with Tripadvisor. I could say "What's a great place for pizza?" and the responses will be "For hamburgers eat at XXXXXX" or "You shouldn't eat pizza" etc.

Have just travelled as a solo on Epic.  You are correct in thinking that only those in Studio Cabins will have their cruise cards indicating they have access to the studio lounge at all times but anyone travelling solo is welcome to join the solo gathering in the Lounge each evening (5-7pm) and can link up with other solos to go to dinner/see shows etc.  Of course you could always get friendly with one of the solo who have a studio cabin and they can let you into the lounge!

i have written a review of my cruise which might give you some tips and it can be found at

What's interesting and different about this is while Haven guests ALWAYS had the option of bringing a non-Haven friend to the Haven restaurant (for a fee and at the discretion of the concierge) - this option is now being offered to anyone on the ship.  You don't have to have a "Haven friend" to take advantage of this offer AND you will also have limited access to the Haven lounge as well.

What a horrible ad. Had to reread this. Yeah I get why people would be annoyed. I don't really think there will be a huge demand though of people paying $50 per person.

  11. The Haven thread got me thinking about this.

I'm interested in getting a studio cabin one day on any of the ships that have it. That said though, often times they seem to be more expensive than just getting an interior cabin.

I've seen on dailies things like "Solo Travelers meet in Studio Lounge at 5". I know you need to have a studio cabin to enter the studio lounge (understandably so). I assume solo travelers who did not book a studio cabin will not have access to any of the solo traveler events due to this correct? Like would a daily ever say "Solo Travelers meet in Spinnaker at 5", when the ship has studio cabins?

  12. I wonder if the Jewel's dailies would be similar in entertainment (no one has posted any from 2018 onwards for Alaska).

Having an 18 and over comedy show 6 out of 7 nights sounds great. I'm not really into hearing music covers or watching people dance, but I love stand up.I would want to see the Beatles tributes though (yeah I contradicted myself).

There was a time when you had to book 6 months in advance to take advantage of the double-up CruiseNext offer (link below)

I see no such terms on the promotion at this time BUT the terms do state that the CruiseNext only applies to the base fare, government taxes, port fees and the DSC are additional. https://www.ncl.com/popup/cruisenext_terms?hide_hf=true

Government taxes, port expenses & fees, general excise tax (GET), and discretionary on board service charges and/or gratuities are additional.

So then yes it will cover taxes and fees?

Interested to know myself and if the cruise were actually under $500 with all taxes, could it apply towards DSC?

I called NCL but the hold time was too long so I hung up. I asked someone on the chat feature and they said they didn't know =/

  15. They are doing the current promo where you can use 2 $250 vouchers on any room until 6/30 right now. That said, can this be used to cover taxes and fees?

A last minute Alaskan cruise is $553 with taxes and fees (before all that it's $349). Can I use both on this paying a difference of $53, or is that not allowed? I don't see anything in the terms and conditions which discuss this.

Also if anyone has 1 that they would like to sell, let me know :)
