  1. Some interesting posts and going back to the OP post I’ve seen similar on other lines.

its worse for solo/single gay passengers as a lot of couples who aren’t in long term relations/married seem very insecure (maybe due to the amount of alcohol flowing or experiences on land) with one of them talking to a solo guy at the bar so instead they tend to join other couples.

it doesn’t bother me and after the first night or two unless there are others willing to talk I “ditch the group” and happy chat to str8 passengers.

Reading through this role call is convincing me to book.  Going on this ship next February and now seeing if I can make it on the Trans A.  Sounds like a nice group of folks here.  How long of a train ride from Gatwick to S. Hampton?  I hope we can make it.

Gatwick airport to Southampton is about 1.5hrs direct train.  Hope you can join us.

  3. If the front of house NCL staff deemed you were being aggressive to them and they complained then NCL have a zero tolerance to aggression to staff and that would have been a ban.

After doing dozens of NCL cruises if there is anything spotted illegal on X-rays etc in your luggage they don’t deliver but call you to the room to open your case for security to inspect and then confiscate until end of the cruise.

However it’s worth noting at most ports you don’t hand your luggage to NCL staff but port staff baggage handlers who sometimes do the screening quayside before loading the cases onto the ship so how do you know it wasn’t one of them who opened the case?

  4. The payment link on the cruise page isn't working for anyone.

I made my final payment using the link.

You had to re-enter your reservation/ sail date etc but then it came up with a screen to enter my card details.

24hrs later I got an email confirmation and 24hrs after that the dashboard changed to no outstanding payment .

  5. I'm new to Cruise Critic. This thread is a confusing one. I guess I don't understand the urgency of printing out luggage tags FORTY SIX day's before you depart.

Please let me know if there is something that i'm missing. Are there problems with luggage tags not being generated properly?

It’s not an urgent request but on the old website they were released together and I had the email to print them out.

Although I do like to get things filed away so I know where I am and which I’ve printed out as have another two cruises in the next few months.

  6. Well I managed to do a check-in via a separate link as the New site was going around in circles. However now I can’t print edocs or luggage tags. From my Royal login I find my booking, select edit/update set-sail, it goes to the screen I can edit the three parts, click print and it returns to the new Royal desktop page!

On there under view docs it says none available. It’s now 56days prior to sailing!

  7. Hi Single Cruiser!

I have a few question for you I hope you can answer.

    1. Was there anything about the Bliss crossing that was unexpected, either good or bad?

My intention is to do a precruise one night stay in Southampton, probably stay at the Holiday Inn.

    2. Do you recommend taking the train from Gatwick or hire a private car. If the train, will two pieces of luggage present a problem in lieu of the seating layout on the train (first class seat if available ) ? If a private car, what is the norm for tipping a driver 10, 15 or 20% of the fare? I know tipping is a personal thing, but tipping standards differ by country, so I thought I would ask.

    3. Any thoughts on the maritime museum in Southampton? As a ship enthusiast, pictures, models and the history of the port itself is like candy to me. Is it worth a visit?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

    Respectfully,

    Tom aka Bertha

    Hi Tom,

    1) Nothing unexpected. I’d done TA’s before including onboard Escape which is a very similar ship so knew what to expect.

    2) there are direct trains from Gatwick to Southampton Central and if you can manage your cases it’s step free at either end. The trains on the Gatwick - Southampton line tend to be more like underground trains as they stop locally rather than a inter city express.

If you go for a private hire there is no standard tip in the UK. Lots will give none, some will round up, so if £35 give £40. Others (mainly American tourists [emoji3] give a percentage ) . It’s not like USA where the driver will get offended or expect ..

    3) most visitors to Southampton visit the museum and the titanic memorial etc.

Holiday Inn is ideal if we sail from City cruise terminal (won’t know for sure until start of next year).

    Hope that helps.

    Craig.

  8. Did they provide ice on rooms daily?

I am on the ship on May 10th in studio. I did have a forward room booked initially.

Could you say the positives of being in the front as well as negatives.

    Thanks for your thread too

Yep my ice bucket was filled up. Generally as long as your room steward knows what you want.

    Pros/cons of fwd facing.

Biggest con was the long walk to the elevators/stairs.

Thus is from fwd lobby looking forward. So all the way to the end of that corridor to get to the front !

Pro bigger cabin than std inside etc and great views in the morning

  9. This may be a stupid question so I will apologize in advance. I will want to keep my luggage with me and self-debark; however, am I allowed to stay on the ship until I decide to leave sometime between 8 am. and 10:45 a.m.? I just want to keep luggage but I don't need to be the first off of the ship.... Thank you and I hope you had the best time ever!!!!

They usually allow people to self disembark over a period of time. Bear in mind though that you are supposed to be out your cabin by 9 so you’ll be dragging your luggage around the ship!

  10. Thanks for doing this review and providing us with so much info. I've really enjoyed following you 3 live reporters. :)

Your welcome. I think we should probably combine post cruise for an “out takes” thread. Lots of funny videos to add [emoji3]

  11. We have our disembarkation times between 8:00 and 10:45, out of cabins by 9:00. But my previous experiences with US immigration gave been considerably longer. On Escape we were still queuing just to get into the terminal at midday!

  12. So final sea day has arrived. We are now on Eastern DST time and a short distance due East of NY.

The next time I open these drapes I should be looking at Manhattan Terminal.

    So last of the dailies

The key point to note is we are arriving much earlier. At the Bridge during the midnight hour. Liberty 1AM.

I’m guessing it’s to allow the crew to clear immigration and us coast guard inspectors etc before the passengers disembark.

I’ve got a fairly hectic schedule planned for NY so not sure if staying up is best or planning a split sleep cycle!
