  1. Every credit card company seems to handle these situations differently. I disputed a charge for $2700 with Citibank. I also had 2 other smaller charges ($950 and $800) toward the same cruise, but charged at different times. I had to file 3 different disputes with this one card. The $2700 dispute prompted them to ask for additional information. I provided it and got a ruling this morning in favor of the merchant....what??? I contacted them immediately. They said sometimes it just depends on the investigator. I initiated another dispute. If they ruled in favor of the merchant for the $2700 amount, what about the other smaller charges that were made? Shouldn't they have ruled in favor of the merchant for all of them?

Chase was wonderful deal with--$900 charge and dispute was settled within 3 weeks permanently. No additional information required.

It's easy to be a cheerleader when you don't have any skin in the game.  I, for one, am pretty much straightforward when it comes to business dealings.  Communication in difficult times helps.  Timely responses help.  Timely refunds are a must.

We are waiting for over $9,000 for a cancelled Princess cruise.  Once the actual cruise date passed, April 4, we filed a disputt with Costco's CitiBank card and received a provisional refund while they slug it out with Princess.  At least I have an advocate in my corner.

I'm no cheerleader, and I have some skin in the game.

I've also disputed a charge with Costco's Citibank. I began the dispute 4/24. I received conditional credit within a few days. About 10 days ago I was asked to provide additional documentation. Thankfully, I booked through Costco so I had emails on online chats with them.

Were you asked to provide any additional documentation to Citibank? I've been told that the matter will be resolved no later than July 13.

Kfrech, I too paid with my Chase credit card. Full payment was due on January 31, so when HAL cancelled our May cruise on March 31, I was already at the 60 day period for disputing the charge. Our TA requested a full refund (about $4,900) around April 1 and at that point the HAL website said refunds were taking 60 days, which would put my refund coming about June 1. Were you past the 60 day dispute period (based on date of payment) when you disputed the charge with Chase? I'm hoping that if I dispute it within 60 days of SAIL DATE  I'll be OK. I'm willing to give HAL until the second week in June, but at that point I plan to dispute. Based on your experience would that work?

The charge on my Chase card was made on 2/11/20. I disputed it on 4/22/20. It was resolved on 5/10/20.

  4. Who is the credit card company?

I had charges on 3 different cards - American Express, Chase and Citibank. They all provided conditional credit within a few days. Chase has already been resolved (in about 3 weeks time since i initiated the dispute). HAL actually refunded the amount to my American Express card (it was just for 2 drink packages and I just received the credit this morning), so that dispute basically resolved itself. Citibank required additional paperwork.

This was for a June Alaskan cruise that I cancelled on March 19th. We were within the "fully refundable" time period. No insurance was involved.

  5. I filed a dispute with Chase on 4/22 for a charge made on 2/10. I was credited the amount ($950) in a matter of 2 days.

This morning I received a letter from Chase saying that the matter had been resolved and they were sending me a check for the full amount. It took less than a month.

I filed a dispute with Citibank for the same cruise in the amount of $2700 (I was trying to maximize accumulating points, thus the use of different credit cards). Citibank credited the amount again within a few days, but just recently asked for substantiating paperwork.

I imagine every credit card company works differently.

I've never enjoyed cruising (you ask - why am I on this forum?). Well we were very excited about our Alaskan Cruise which we thought would be THE way to see Alaska after 7 days land on our own (No cruise tour company helping). We booked everything and looked forward to HAL cruising even though it's not our normal thing. We've also thought that river cruises (never done them) could be an option one day. But cruising the islands - no way for us. We like to choose an island, find a beautiful place to stay, and explore. We deliberately avoid cruise landing days to go to certain ports. We did Croatia, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, England, Moscow (that's not really seeing Russia of course) on our own. Loved our wonderful trips.

Will we come back to cruising? We still want to do Alaska on a cruise and would choose HAL again. But not until a full year goes by with the cruise companies showing they made changes and have safe ways to do this. I won't be one of the early returners -though I wish EVERYONE well who chooses to do so.

I could have written these very same words. We've only cruised 3 times, but were very much looking forward to our Alaskan cruise in June. We would much rather explore on our own. I really have no desire to cruise again anytime soon.

  7. I don't know how the FCC works because I opted for a full refund. I cancelled on 3/8 for a June Alaskan cruise. I've received no monies back at this point.

I actually used 3 different credit cards to pay for my cruise and disputed each one separately. It's a relatively easy process. You'll have to visit each credit card's website.

The CC company credits you back the monies...conditionally. They will give you a date where they expect the matter to be resolved between themselves and HAL. It is my understanding that once that date passes, the credited money is yours. They ask you to make them aware of any correspondence, credits, etc. that you receive from HAL.

I actually initiated the disputes weeks ago. I didn't even wait for the 60 day mark, since I have so little faith that HAL will refund any monies (whether willingly or otherwise).

If I was waiting for a refund past thirty days I would be initiating a credit card dispute process with my credit car issuer.  Far easier to deal with them than with a cruise line.

If you have not got a refund in 60 days, why would you think it would arrive in 90 days or any time before the apparently mandatory 120 day refund time frame in many cruise contracts?

It is called cash flow management.  Theirs.....not yours.

I did exactly this. Much less stressful.

  9. I had charges on 3 different credit cards for an Alaskan cruise in June. All 3 have credited my cards the amounts I paid, with 1 exception. One card (citibank) is taking longer with a portion of the payments because it was charged in 2019.

I did all of it online.

I do believe there is than a time frame (the credit card company will give you that date) when the matter is considered "resolved".

We cancelled our June 6 and June 20 cruises on March 17.  If we don't receive our refund on our credit cards by June 7 and June 21, we can notify our credit card that we did not receive the service we paid for and they will handle it at that point.  That was their advice to us.  So HAL has about 12 to 14 weeks to refund.  To me that is sufficient.

What specifically will your credit card company do for you? I ask this because we hadn't paid off our cruise as of March 19th (the day we cancelled); the balance was sitting on our credit card but since the bill wasn't due yet, I didn't want to pay--why give HAL more money at that point. I called the CC and they put the amount "in dispute". We will continue to incur interest charges, but they told me that once HAL refunds the money, I can call the CC company back and they'll refund the interest.

I guess my question is this, if 60 days goes by without a refund, what will the credit card company do for you? Refund all of your money? What is their obligation at that point? If they were to refund monies, wouldn't everyone be going that route?

I have 3k sitting on a credit card waiting to be paid for an Alaskan cruise in June. I haven’t paid it and I won’t. I’ll take it up with the credit card company. I’m not letting go of anymore money at this point.

I called my CC card earlier. I was advised today to NOT pay the 3K. Interest will accrue, however, I was told that once the credit from HAL appears on my credit card, I can call the credit card company and they will refund the interest charged. They will only do that if you call.

Once the full credit appears on my card, the 3K that is in "limbo" (for lack of a better term), will be negated.

  13. I was told 7-10 days also for a full refund. Looks like it will be longer.

My PIF is still sitting on my credit card. I haven’t paid it yet because the payment is not due until mid April. I’d rather not hand over any more money at this point. I may dispute it with my credit card company.

  14. Got through to big box TA. Not a bad wait at all. Apparently someone at TA dropped the ball. They were able to talk to HAL while I was on the line and cancel the cruise. However, than I had to speak to a supervisor at the TA because HAL didn't want to refund my deposit since on their end, it looks like I'm only canceling today. Since it was TA fault, TA is issuing me a check. We booked under the explorer 4 promo, so the deposit was quite low.

When I log into my HAL account, the cruise is still there. I'll give it a few days and check back again.

I will have to say, everyone I spoke to was wonderful, both at HAL and TA. Maybe we'll all learn something from this and be kinder to one another.

  15. Thank you for the responses. I’m not overly concerned; my PIF date was March 1st (to big box, but 3/13 to HAL). Right now the balance is just sitting on my credit card waiting to actually be paid by me (which of course I don’t want to do). I may just call the credit card company and initiate a dispute if I don’t receive a refund before the payment is due.
