Thanks. With all the talk of how cruises are going downhill and not the same clientele I wondered when they started. Looks like it was with the old cruisers who must have taken part when it first started.

I'd rather be known as an earlier cruiser than an old one (even though I am 😉)

Please can I join the seminar training? - not that I need reminding that I  am definitely " you can take the girl out of Yorkshire but you can't take Yorkshire out of the girl"  although I have to  sadly admit that  I now  sometimes say   " Can you not and Do you not "  I  seem to be losing the Can't you and Don't you phrase.  Apologies to those offended LOL

Why would you want to change your dialect? That's what makes us different. After living with southern parents and going to school with Yorkshire girls my accent is a mish-mash of the two.

Adawn47, I see you are also from Yorkshire, so no real surprise that you have a sensible down to earth attitude as to how to enjoy a cruising holiday without raining on other peoples parades.

Maybe we should arrange to run training seminars for some of the ones who don't possess our common sense.😇

Thanks for the compliment. I'm not Yorkshire born however, I'm a  Southern transplant but have been here for 62 years now so I'm sure I'm forgiven 😉. My parents also had a sense of live and let live and I feel the same. The seminars are a good idea, but I don't think they'd be well attended. Too many people are already perfect 😇.

  4. I know I'm about to get a lot of backlash from this post but I have to say that I am, and always have, been proud to be British. We should not be ashamed to sing our patriotic songs nor our National Anthem, although to use them as an insult to other nations is, and I agree, absolutely disgusting. We should be proud of our country, other nations are proud of theirs.

  5. It's  something we never attended, not that it annoyed us but we'd much rather watch leaving port from the balcony. We don't like bingo, quizzes or the casino but we'd never complain just to get them removed. We're all individual with different tastes which are catered for on the ship. If you don't like anything don't go, it's that simple.

Not sure why you felt the need to post this on a dormant thread.

Anyway, it isn't a rumour,  the GB sailaway has been replaced with a Sailaway Party,  which mainly comprises those awful songs from the 60s and 70s that you hoped never to hear again.

I've  never been to one so I won't miss it.

If there is a dress code you should adhere to it out of respect for your fellow guests. But it is fine to show some individuality within the code as long as it is not breached. I personally dislike wearing a traditional necktie or a bow tie, but have a collection of bolo ties some of which are quite formal. I wear one of these with my dinner suit and it looks fine, much better imo than a dickie bow.

That looks very smart. l quite like it, and it's NOT a t-shirt.

Good point about a shirt and tie not being that heavy.  I'll pack one or two when I cruise on P&O.

A pompous ass in a tux is still a pompous ass is a roundabout counter to the old saw that clothes make the man.  As I have cruised over the years, I have met a variety of people and some of the most charming have been amongst those who may not be dressed to the nines and some of the most boorish have been those who show up in a tux and are definitely dressed to impress.  I know it's a broad generalization, but the extremes are memorable.

Dress codes, chair hogs, and smoking are all hot topics aren't they?

    Cheers.

I quite agree with you that clothes don't make a man. Respect and good manners do, both of which you need if you adhere to the dress code on formal night. They don't dress to impress, they dress to use the MDR on formal evenings. My husband never owned a dinner suit until we began cruising, he never needed one. He's not a pompous ass, he's a real gent.

In our experience, if there are no two's available at breakfast and you request a table for two they will seat you on a four and not put anyone else with you.

Exactly what they do on freedom. One table, one couple. Same difference, just more elbow room 😊

The Orchid and Arcadia Rhodes were originally the speciality restaurants in Arcadia. They are now called a Sindhu and Ocean Grill. They serve similar food to what their predecessors did and are in the same space on the ship.
Arcadia has 2 main dining rooms. One is set dining and one is freedom dining. As you are on the saver fare, you will be allocated one of them and will not be able to choose. Hopefully you will be lucky and be allocated freedom if that is what you want.

The Orchid on Arcadia was Asian Fusion not Indian. You could get the  odd curry in there but predominately Chinese cuisine .  We've had some wonderful meals in there. Devastated when they altered it.

At breakfast, can you request a table for 2, or is it just take what seating is left?  I'm not much into conversation until I have had at least 2 coffees on a morning.

Yes you can. Just ask before they seat you. You might have to wait sometimes the same as you would on freedom but it's well worth it. We aren't anti-social but prefer to eat quietly together at breakfast and chat as and when  we like without being pulled into conversations.

To each their own Jean and I respect your personal perspective however for balcony’s and suites the differential can be horrendously

Inside cabin , balcony or suite, the point Jean is  making I think, is that when you book at launch the prices very rarely go down but definitely go up and quite significantly sometimes.

I’ve read of quite a few who report doing this to their benefit, so I wouldn’t know definitely whether ‘seldom’ applies.  However, I’m sure a P&O forum is not the place to debate the detail of Celebrity bookings, so I’ll once again celebrate that when I book with them, I don’t have to concern myself with all of this!

Me neither. I search for  a cruise, decide on number days, ship, itinerary, cabin and price. If I'm happy I'll  book. Job done. I couldn't do with all the messing about to save a few pounds. Got better things to do.

  14. At breakfast one morning we were seated at a two top near to a mother, father a two children aged about 8 and 10. Through the entire meal no-one said a word except to order. They were too busy on their tablets / iphones etc. I wonder if evolution in the future will produce humans without a voice but extra large thumbs 😊.

You still don't seem to have grasped the concept of a dress code, do you? It's not a matter of a lack of a tie being "offensive" that is the issue,  it is that you have chosen to  cruise on a line that has a code, and as such, you should adhere to that code.

So you like to travel light. Fine. A tie isn't heavy and takes up no room. Can I politely ask without meaning to offend,  why if you consider a "pompous ass in a tux" is offensive do you choose a ship where a strict dress code is enforced?  I have noticed that of the lines you mentioned as ok with a t-shirt under your jacket or no tie, P&O wasn't among them.

    Yep, that's half the fun.

A lot of what people find offensive, we find hilarious, like the 'bun sniffer' in the buffet who seemed to pick up every bakery item, sniff it, then put it back.. 😊

It wasn't nice, but she obviously wasn't all the ticket, so difficult to get angry..

It just confirmed to us that the mdr is much more civilised...

    Andy

Wow! I'm really glad I had my specs on when I read that. I would have been imaging all sorts of things if I'd misread it 😆.

  17. Prices vary depending on which restaurant you choose but they do offer the occasional discounts. They will be announced in the daily Horizon newspaper. If you look on your cruise personaliser  later on when you can start booking them all the prices will be on there.
