  1. I have been away from this thread for some time since one of us tested Covid positive in Miami and we were not permitted to sail on the Octantis. We were very disappointed and got turned off on Antarctica. All that changed when we learned about the new 18-day itinerary that includes South Georgia Island and the Falklands, but two fewer days in Antarctica. Since there was a promotion of $25 per person deposit, it seemed like a no-brainer to book it. We are once again excited about taking an expedition on Viking. As the OP, I am glad to be back.
  2. Hi, long time, no see. We were one of two couples who tested asymptomatic positive for an Octantis expedition in February and were unable to take the cruise. We are still fighting with TripMate for full reimbursement. This insurance deducted $6000 for the one night at the Sheraton. I highly recommend alternate insurance. Nevertheless, we decide to book the January 31, 2024 sailing on the Octantis that includes the South Georgia Island and Falkland Islands in addition to Antarctica. This 18-night itinerary seems awesome.
  3. This thread is for discussion of all-things Viking Expeditions, a new division that complements Oceans and Rivers. Viking initially plans two ships for Expeditions: the Viking Octantis and the Viking Polaris. These ships will have immersive itineraries in Antarctica, the north polar regions, the Great Lakes and Canada. Each ship will carry up to 378 passengers, have rafts that are boarded inside on the hanger deck, and will even have a submersible. The Inaugural Sailing of the Viking Octantis is January 13, 2022 from Ushuaia, Argentina. However, the journey begins in Buenos Aires on January 12, the date for the cruise listed online and the brochure. The ship is named after Octantis, the South Star, as the Viking Polaris is named for the North Star. https://www.vikingcruises.com/expeditions
