  1. A Visit From St Nicholas

(With Apologies to Clement Clarke Moore)

T'was the night before Christmas, when all through the ship,

not a creature was stirring, no drinks left to sip.

The stockings were hung on the balconies with glee

in hopes that St Nicholas would find us at sea.

The cruisers were snuggled all warm in their bunks.

The guys with their sweeties, the girls with their hunks.

And Joyce in her jammies and I in the buff

had just taken bonine as the seas were quite rough.

When somewhere above there resounded a roar

I sprang from my bed and fell flat on the floor.

Away to the slider I stumbled and lurched,

went out to the balcony and searched and searched.

The moon on the waves cast an eerie bright light

so it looked more like noon, instead of midnight.

When what apparition appeared on the seas

but a bright red tender pulled by 8 red jet skis.

And atop the tender, with a whip in his hand,

was a bearded jolly elf so plump and so tanned.

And the sped o'er the wavetops onward they came

he whistled and shouted and called them by name.

On Legend, on Grandeur, on Freedom and Sovereign,

on Empress, on Jewel, on Monarch and Vision.

On up to the Lido, Viking Crown Lounge so tall

now dash away, dash away, dash away all.

As zephyrs, and breezes and hurricanes blew

they arose to the sky on the updrafts they flew.

So up to the sky bridge in search of a flue

went the vessels with Santa and all of his crew.

And above we could hear them, it sounded so cool

the tender and jet skies doing donuts in the pool.

As it grew quiet, we heard a faint sound

and there was St Nicholas as we turned around.

He was dressed in a wet suit with flippers and all

and he was almost as wide as he was tall.

He had a case of wine under each arm

with Pinots and Malbecs to help us stay warm.

His eyes were all bloodshot but oh, how they twinkled.

And his hands they looked frozen, so red and so wrinkled.

He opened his mouth and let go with a yell

"Hey let's open this wine, I'm about cold as hell"

He pulled out a pipe and some green stuff and said

"No, I'll save this for later, I've a long night ahead".

He looked like a sausage packed tight; he was stout

but his belly was pooching as his spanx they gave out.

With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head

he opened and poured us a large glass of red.

After that he was silent and set to his task,

filled our stockings with wine and put some in his flask.

Then he jumped off the balcony but went up not down

and the mist began swirling around and around.

His minions were waiting, to the tender he flew

and they headed to the next ship to give them their due.

But we heard him exclaim as he sailed out of sight

"Happy Cruising to all and to all a good night".

    Merry Christmas

    and

    Bon Voyage

  3. Says "unsupported booking" and to contact my travel agent. I've always been able to book through choiceair.com but it's down. Called them and they said they would be happy to assist but I like to be able to do it myself so I can look at seating (I consult seatguru.com)

etc. while I'm booking. We like the 2 fers on the airbuses. ChoiceAir has been "down" for almost a month. Hope they get it back up. It would be a shame if this was the new norm.

  4. The Adventure continues. We boarded the ship yesterday and went to our stern balcony cabin to check it out. It was a typical Royal Caribbean cabin but the balcony was HUGE! Joyce was grinning from ear to ear and immediately grabbed a book, stretched out on a lounger and got into cruising mode. Our luggage came soon after so we unpacked, and strolled down to the centrum for a martini and a little music. Shortly after we attended the muster drill then headed up to the Concierge Lounge for a couple more adult beverages. We promised ourselves that we would be good as it's no fun to be hung over on the second day of the cruise. Well, we tried! They had a fantastic array of hors d' oeuvres, mini lamb chops, seasoned goat cheese on toast, pate's, and a varied selection of sushi. We opted for late (8:30pm) dinner so we didn't have to worry about ruining our appetites. We headed to the casino for a quick stop. Joyce liked the look of one of the machines so threw a twenty in it and won $11.20 on the first pull. We couldn't figure out how to change the game or the number of simultaneous games played so we plowed on. Long story short, she cashed out $50 and we headed for dinner. Joy had the prime rib and I opted for the spaghetti bolognese. We finally headed back to our cabin and lo and behold, there was a fantastic arrangement of rose petals waiting for us along with a complimentary bottle of champagne from Royal Caribbean. We read a few pages and collapsed into bed. More to follow.

  5. Why is she golden? Because of Royal's 50th anniversary? Well, maybe that's part of it but mostly it's because we are joining her for a tour to Greece to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Originally, we had planned to stay on at the end of this cruise to continue on the transatlantic back to the states. Due to a change in deployment for the Jewel, our plans changed a bit. Now we will be staying in Rome for a few days prior to joining the Brilliance of the Seas in Barcelona for her transatlantic back to Tampa. Four more days in Europe? I think we can deal with that.  Well, we made it! Got up Saturday at 7am, took the shuttle to the airport, flew Jet Blue to JFK, Delta to Milan then Alitalia to Rome. Our driver was waiting for us and carried us to Civitavecchia where we checked into our Hotel . The owner prefers that we call it a guest house as there are only seven rooms but it's more like a bed and breakfast. It's called Alibrandi Palace and it's our first choice of places to stay when we cruise out of Rome. Rome's cruise port is actually in Civitavecchia. Here are a few pics of our room. The owner gave us the suite room with its huge wrap-around balcony for the princely sum of 60 euros per night to make up for the last stay which didn't work out so well. He didn't notify Booking .com and he had to put us up at a friend's B&B when there was no room for us. We freshened up a bit then headed to a favorite cafe for some vino and people watching. They fed us so much and so well on our flight that we weren't hungry for lunch. We'll go out later this evening for a light dinner. We'll try to stay up till 10 or so tonight to defeat the jet lag although that will be 36 hours since we last slept. We board the ship tomorrow for our 9 day 50th anniversary cruise with stops at Mykonos, Athens and Santorini in Greece, Malta, Messina and Naples. then back to Rome. We are SO ready to get on board.

  6. We are always conscious of our budget (so we can cruise more) and have found that the bus works best for us .It leaves from the front of the airport every 20 minutes or so (you want precision, go to Switzerland) and cost 8 euros one way or 15 euros round trip. There is plenty of room for luggage and it drops you off in Piazzale Roma, the hub of Venice. Our favorite hotel is one bridge and about 500 yards from there. The people mover is a few yards from the bus drop off and it gets you to the outside of the cruise port. It's a good stroll from there to the ship depending on which berth so many folks take a taxi instead of the people mover. This info may change when Venice changes its cruise ship protocol.

  7. There is a grocery store a hundred yards or so to the north of Piazzale Roma. That is the main bus drop-off spot for Venice and where the taxis line up to take you to the cruise port. Just walk towards the bridge to the train station (Ponte della Constituzione) but instead of crossing the bridge, stay to the left along the water. The store is called COOP. If you zoom in on Google maps, you can find it quite easily. Of course, you can always find a wine store or other grocery store but that one is convenient and inexpensive. Don't expect to find fine wines there but there is a good selection of very drinkable wines to be had. Groceries too!

  11. Enjoying your "process". We see a lot of trip reports but the pre-planning is often shrouded in mystery. Thanks for the insight.

We just got back from a back-to-back on the Millennium and 2nd your idea for Icy Strait Point as a whale watching choice. We were undecided so we used our Northbound trip as a preview so-to-speak of what excursions we would do. We saw so many whales from the shore and from the ship while in ISP that we never did schedule an excursion. We saw bubble feeding twice during our walk along the shore. They were so close to shore; no more than 150 yards from us. We watched from our balcony and saw whale after whale as well as a bunch of seals.

As far as glaciers are concerned, we took public transportation from Juneau to Mendenhall Glacier ($2 PP each way). The bus drops you off about 1 1/2 miles from the park but the walk is flat and pleasant. Hubbard Glacier was spectacular. Lots of calving and we had sunny skies both stops. Got to about 4/10ths of a mile and wow, was that close. The noise was deafening.

At Skagway, we did Dyea Dave's tour to Emerald lake. Many in the van took the train on the way back but the fog was rolling in so our decision to do the bus up and back may have been a good one. We stopped in Carcross for lunch at the "Bistro" and had a great meal of Halibut and chips. Saw 2 brown bears, 1 black bear, lots of Dall sheep and mountain goats.

Just thought I would share that with you but it sounds as if you've got things well in hand. One heads up: keep checking for price drops as we started in an ocean view and ended up in a Concierge Class balcony with all 4 perks and all price drops were in the last 3 weeks prior to the cruise.

    Bon Voyage!

  12. On the southbound leg starting in Seward with sail away at 8pm - what time were you allowed to board?

We were on the previous cruise so we were already on board when general boarding began at 11am. We did get off and went downtown for a while at 1:30pm. We walked back along the water and here was where we saw a lot of sea otters. They were swimming back and forth along the shoreline.

  13. Just got back from a B2B Alaska cruise on the Millennium. Unless you are a chronic nitpicker, you should have no issues with her. The crew was outstanding, the food was exceptional (be sure to try the Conundrum red wine: primo!), and the ship is in great shape. She's showing a tad of wear but you have to look for it. Don't worry about a thing and enjoy your cruise; we certainly did.

  14. Just an update. I posted a review on the main Celebrity board but for those of you who have followed along, there won't be much "new" stuff. Also, we bought TWO Ulu knives and packed them in or checked bags. No problem. Now, if there was another reason for the negative recommendation, I'm unaware of it.

After we disembarked, we dropped our bags off at CDS, right in the terminal. They transported them to the airport and stored them until we picked them up at 7pm. Cost for 4 bags was a very reasonable $40 CDN.

Prior to boarding on the 10th of May, we had stopped at the Tourist Information Office across from Canada Place and purchased two Senior Transport Day Passes for $7.50 CDN each. They were not activated till we used them the first time on the 25th. We visited Gas Town, China Town, and Granville Island then strolled around the shopping district around Robson St. We gradually made our way back to the waterfront and stopped for a pint and some spicy pork dumplings at Mahony and Sons just to the West of Canada Place.

The weather was fantastic this final day of our vacation and as we sat there in short-sleeved shirts watching the seaplanes come and go, we remarked on how fortunate we were to have had only a few hours of rain and cold for the whole 15 days.

Hoped you have enjoyed tagging along and sharing our cruise with us. See you on the ship and Bon Voyage to all!

    Harry

  15. We had been thinking of an Alaska cruise for some time, even made a reservation or two, but we always seemed to find a reason to cancel: either a different cruise struck our fancy or life got in the way. This time we vowed it would be different. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night would stay these cruisers from the completion of their chosen itinerary!

We decided on Celebrity because they offered the best itinerary at the best price and we could do a back-to-back to simplify air arrangements and insure a longer cruise experience.

Since our cruise departed from and returned to Vancouver, we began planning our air and hotel arrangements. Unfortunately, all we could do was plan as we were too far out to actually make reservations.

One way to insure we wouldn't cancel again was to book our air fares as soon as they opened. Air Canada offered the best compatible travel option and we booked it. No turning back now; not with change fees being what they are these days.

We decided to go all-in and we booked a non-refundable hotel as well. We opted for the Pan Pacific Hotel because it is located right at Canada Place which is also the cruise port. We opted for the Cruise Package which included accommodations in a delightful room with two queen beds, a sumptuous breakfast, late check-out (2pm) and transfer of our baggage to the ship. Best of all, when it came time to go to the ship, we simply took the elevator to the bottom floor cruise terminal level and were shown to our check-in line.

When we first booked, we opted for an ocean view cabin on both legs which included the "Go Better" package (choice of two out of four amenities: free gratuities, unlimited internet, classic drink package or $150 per person OBC). We opted for the OBC and drink package. Long story short: after a series of prices drops, we ended up in a Concierge Class balcony cabin with the "Go Best" package (all four amenities with an upgrade to the Premium Beverage Package) for just a small amount more than our original fare.

After an excruciating wait of 16 months, we flew off to Vancouver for our Alaskan Adventure. The hotel was a study in understated elegance and we were pleased with our choice. We took a stroll for a bite to eat and returned to our room to try to sleep but we never get much rest the night before a cruise. We were up bright and early and lo and behold looked out of our room and DOWN on our cruise ship. Yes, we were on the 19th floor and we were looking down at the Millennium which was docked on our side of Canada Place. We had a leisurely breakfast and went for a stroll around downtown Vancouver but it didn't last long. We couldn't contain ourselves so we headed back, called the Bell Captain to take our luggage to the ship and we headed DOWN to check-in. All-in-all, our best pre-cruise stay yet.

I know, I know, when are we going to get to the cruise. I did a "Live From" thread during the cruise so if you go here: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2632751 you will find a detailed narrative and lots of photos.

A few notes: the Millennium was ship-shape in all respects, the crew was top-notch and every encounter was a pleasure. The food was very good, as good as any we have had on other ships. We are not "show" people and we did not attend any while on board.

Alaska was so much more breathtaking than we could ever have imagined and the people that we met both on and off the ship were a delight. Alaskans have a great attitude about life. I can't do it justice with words; you will have to experience it to understand.

This was our first cruise with Celebrity and our first Alaska cruise and both experiences exceeded all of our expectations. We can't wait to do it again!

  16. Last post of the cruise and it's been a real blast. First time to Alaska, first Celebrity cruise and ALL our expectations have been exceeded. We were overwhelmed both with the magnificent scenery and the friendliness of the Alaskan people. The crew members on the ship were the best we've ever encountered in all our previous cruises. They made a great cruise even better. We can't wait to visit Alaska again and Celebrity will be our first choice.

Our flight doesn't leave Vancouver till late so we will drop our bags with CDS baggage service at the port; they will transport them to the airport and hold them till we pick them up at 8pm. We bought transit passes and will be touring Vancouver for most of tomorrow. Should be fun.

I will be posting a wrap-up review in a few days. Till then, so long from the Celebrity Millennium.

  17. Hi, Harry, following with much interest. IF you have the chance once you're home, and IF you took photos of the dailies and/or MDR menus, do you think you might be able to post them? We're taking an SB cruise next year on the Millennium and hoping for a little bit of an advance idea of what to expect (knowing, of course, that things can change a bit year-to-year).

Hope you're enjoying your SB cruise, best wishes!

Sorry, no photos of either. Photos take forever on board so I didn't shoot menus and such.

  18. Hi Harry,

We're cruising on Millie on June 8th. Please clue us in on the Ulu knife situation. My significant other bought one the last time he was on an Alaskan cruise and we were planning to pick up another while we were there.

    Are they banned?

    Thank you!

Got me by the hoolywhatches! I bought two already for gifts and was planning on another. I saw that caveat but didn't have any idea what it was about. I'm packing ours in checked luggage so we'll see what happens. I'll post the result here (if I'm not in the slammer at Guantanamo Bay.

    Harry
