  1. I recently sailed from Vancouver, B.C. and for the first time in our cruising history, we were informed that tipping was not necessary! I did a double take considering I literally had to chase the handler to give him the tip (we had 4 bags, mind you!!!). OK, I was really chasing him because he was a hunk;) (fireman-type). But I think that Vancouver got it right!

At $1/bag, it is a relief to get rid of those dreaded bags and it is cheaper than the cruise line's Bags program. I don't find it necessary to tip any more than that.

  2. Why is it so cheap to get a 1-nighter out of Seattle, WA compared with a 1-nighter out of New York City? Going out of NYC is more than double!

We wonder the same thing. Even Princess has cheap coastal cruises on the west coast.....not fair!

Norfolk has two 2-nt cruises annually on Carnival and they are $400 pp. For a little more we can take a 7-nt out of FLL. I just wish they had more variety on the east coast at affordable prices.

  3. Opinions. Opinions. We all have them. Private or public endeavors. Although Chichen Itza made the list, Uxmal is my favorite. Shorter drive from Progreso, prettier and more impressive to me personally. Added note, I believe that both Merida and Campeche have been named USESCO World Heritage Sites or Cities. Both Chichen Itza and Uxmal are definitely worth the effort to see. Some of the structures at Uxmal DO allow some climbing. I think your suggestion that the naming of CI as a New World Wonder was some kind of scam initiated by the Mexican government tourist folks IS very cynical.

This was exactly how I interpreted this statement. I agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What may appeal to one person may not hold the same appeal to someone else. We have enjoyed every ruin that we have been to (Ok, maybe not San Gervasio so much) but each one had its own history.

hdawson- Just an FYI, Wikipedia is not the most reliable source for factual information. There is no shortage of false, misleading or inaccurate information, hence the reason universities deem the info unreliable and unacceptable.

  4. That "wonders of the world" thing is kind of a scam since it was created as part of a tourist campaign. It's not a "wonder of the world"... it's a "New Wonder of the world" that the Mexican Govt. (or someone... too lazy to search google for the info) created.

Still, we went to Uxmal and it was lovely-- we were able to get plenty of dynamite pictures. The kids were able to climb up the ruins as well.

Uxmal isn't one of the Wonders of the World (old or new). The newest addition is Chichen Itza, hence the reason no one is allowed to climb the largest pyramid anymore. It truly is something to behold and definitely worth the trip.

  5. This room was horrible! The floor was hot! My feet felt sunburnt all week! Not to mention one of the crew doors was right behind my bed, so all night and early morning it was slamming as well. Very noisy and warm!

    I would avoid this room!

Although our cabin temperature and floor was fine, we had the similar issues with cabin # 1271.

We booked a guaranteed cabin on the advice of a TA (I know, shame on me) and ended up with this one. The cabin was midship and seemed to be OK. However, I didn't realize the shaded areas on the ship map were crew rooms (dishwashing, fire escape, room service, etc.) We were awakened every morning around 4:45 am by doors slamming next to us & across the hall and were kept up late nights listening to crew bang pots and pans all night.

Avoid this room like a plague!

  6. We will be the Norwegian Sun next month and have just booked this excursion thru NCL. I generally don't book thru the cruiseline but given the length of this trip and after hearing some of the close calls, we felt it was safer to book with NCL.

In checking the prices, NCL is $90 pp but they consider my 12 year-old a child so she gets a discounted price of $69. This is a $47 savings over Viator, $31 over seabelize and $9 more than belizecruiseexcursions or islandmarketing. For peace of mind, it is definitely worth the extra $9 plus we are assured of getting off the ship at a reasonable time.

Would love to see some pics if anyone has any.

  7. We were on the Jewel in October, from Boston to Bermuda and back to Boston, WOW the seas were rough!!! Five days after we got back to AZ, I seriously thought the bed was going up and down, and my husband thought his work desk was going up and down. We never experienced this before on any of our past cruises. A few days later everything was fine, so give it 5 to 7 days, it will get better :D

It's the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. I have a girlfriend who cruises out of Norfolk to the Bahamas every year and she said the Atlantic coast is always rough. The seas in the Gulf coast are much calmer. It also depends on where your cabin is on the ship - we usually choose midship and like the other posts stated, the size of the ship also matters.

  8. How many people in your party? We're four people and when I talked to them they said we're fine with 4 in a one bedroom (2 in the king bed and 2 in the pull out). Works for me! If you're more than 4 people, then you have to do a 2 bedroom.

And those prices you're quoting are about right. That's why we were happy to get the one bedroom for the night.

There's only 3 of us. My mother, daughter and myself. Maybe it was the website I used at the time (woodfinhotels.com) - for some reason it would automatically bump us into the 2-bedroom for anything more than 2 guests . I will try to go to another website to reserve it. Thanks.

  9. Try Chase Suites. They have a shuttle from the airport to the hotel and then to the port the next morning (after a complimentary breakfast). They have one and two bedroom suites too.

Do you happen to know if there are any discount or promo codes for this property? I have checked everywhere and the cheapest we can come up with is $189/night for the 2-bedroom. When we enter the # of travelers it always defaults to the 2-bedroom instead of the 1-bedroom. Unfortunately we are arriving during Spring Break which is driving up the cost considering the average rate is around $139 according to previous posts. We like the property because of the free breakfast & shuttle to airport & pier.
