Last month, we [3 adults] took a taxi to Chogogo Beach Resort about 3 miles outside of town. For $25. pp [includes a $10 food credit] we had full access to their pools, lazy river floats, palm covered lounge chairs and access to a beach bar and food. Very nice & clean place, friendly staff, very good pina coladas and we opted to share a large tray of nachos with all the amenities.

How much was the taxi? I see you can't reserve a spot. What happens if they are full? I hate to waste a day.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I added the country code, rechecked and rechecked all the information I can edit.  Still doesn't take it.  Guess I'll call Princess Monday, hopefully they can straighten it out.  I considered trying to add the passport as new, but was afraid to mess up what I was able to enter.

I found that if there was a space after any of the information it wouldn't take it. The info was all correct and I couldn't figure it out. The spacing corrected it all. Hope this helps.

"The Diamond Lounge was the same as usual, despite the five drinks vouchers. This was nice, as it enabled people to enjoy their nibbles and socialise with others."

So did you still get your free drinks in the diamond lounge or did they take them off your drink vouchers? You got 5? I am only diamond not plus so that may be the difference.

    Thanks for the reply.

  4. Another helpful hint might be Do your laundry/ironing during dinner time or early in the morning - not on sea days! (bring a tote bag) AND:

Each day when you go off the ship, take the phone number of the ship. If you have an emergency, you'll want to have it. I also take the name and phone number of the ship's agent in each port. That info is normally printed on the daily paper that is delivered to your stateroom the night before.( take a picture of the numbers with your camera)

  5. Not many pay toilets on Homies land tours. At one Norway waterfall stop used credit card to get toilet coins, no problem.

NOT many pay toilets only like on river cruises in Germany, France & Italy. Guides got us to all the freebies.

    Thanks for the info.

River cruise was all pay toilets.

  6. Derrick22, their ship sailed from Stockholm to Bergen so they stayed longer in Stavanger. I have contacted the Rodne company and have been assured that we would be back by 1:00 and our ship leaves at 2:00. We booked with them on line, and they immediately emailed our tickets. We are on the same ship so come with us! Others have said the scenery is beautiful and trip cost much less than Viking!

    We will join you!

    Off to make resrvations now.

  7. Icelandair uses planes with really small overheads on the inside but regular size on the outside. Worse yet they tie up 6 rows or more of the larger overheads with their gear. Both ways I had to walk back 6 rows upon arrival to retrieve my carry on.

    .

    Thanks for the info.

We leave in 29 days but who's counting!

Some of you know that we decided not to go through Viking to get to Pulpit Rock in Stavanger. We ended up using the company Norled instead of Rodne because of their better time. It was fantastic. We even had enough time to explore Stavanger afterwards. Both Norled and Rodne are easy to find right at the port. I was looking for some sort of a kiosk or something big with their names on it but all they had was a little table and an umbrella. Both are right next to each other. We had bad weather so we didn't get to see the top of Pulpit Rock but it was still worth it. We were fully prepared for rain so we stayed outside on their deck most of that cruise and the 360 view was worth it It costs considerably less than Viking's tour to Pulpit Rock. The only difference between Viking's tour and Norled's was that Viking stops at a beach for a waffle. We actually saw them on land getting their waffle in the rain.

    Thank you for the review.

How did you manage Norled? The tour leaves at 12:15 and is 2 hours.

    The ship leaves at 2.

    Thanks

  9. I do remember that one lady from Chicago was convinced that the German food at home was much better than the food she was eating in Germany.

    To each their own.

Funny you should say that. I wasn't impressed with the pastries in Germany off the ship. The rest of the German good was great, not the desserts.

At least from the cafes I went to.

The food on Viking was all very good. Only had one thing I didn't like and it was a tuna tatare that was offered as a pre appetizer.

There are plenty off choices every night.

  10. Let's see what else is there that river cruises don't have to worry about-- they wont have to worry about being sent to the naughty room if they bring booze on board.

They won't have to worry about standing in line with hundreds of other passengers to get tender tickets, or waiting in line to get into the Anytime dining room.

They won't have to spend extra for alternative restaurants, or beer, wine and sodas.

What else do River cruisers not have to worry about,

    -anyone?

Water replaced in our room everyday, water given out when you leave the ship, not having to pay for every excursion and umbrellas if needed.

No bingo announcements, free giveaways or art auctions. Getting to see things that large groups can't.

I really never felt like I was cattle at any time. Never rushed or waited in lines other than letting a group go before us.

I love ocean cruising and will continue but I really loved the river cruise even with the low river.

Viking handled everything flawlessly. Kudos to them.

  11. Thanks for the reports.

I'm not sure I'm understanding your comment on the menus though?

The samples I've seen are labelled 'First Course', 'Main Course' and 'Desert' so the normal expectation would be that you are ordering one from each, not multiple choices from the 'First Course' list.

    Jumping in.

Just off the Alsvin/Ingvi Amsterdam to Budapest.

Many of us ordered two items off the first course. One being a soup and the other being a salad.

My DH also ordered a cheese plate and a dessert most nights.

There was never a problem doing this.

  12. One comfortable walking sandal. One dress sandal (black) one pair of athletic shoes and one pair flip flops.

    Exactly what I brought.

I wore the black flats on the plane and to the two dressier dinners. The flip flops (merrell sandals) I wore to dinner and out and about on the ship.

I alternated between the walking sandals and athletic shoes based on the weather and excursion.

I didn't feel I needed any more or less.

  13. Just home today from the Viking Grand European cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest on the Alsvin. We started with a 2 day pre cruise extension and ended with a 2 day post cruise extension in Budapest.

The day before we were scheduled to leave we received an email about the possibility of a ship swap.

While on board the first couple of days there was no discussion of the swap. Everyone, especially the crew was hoping this did not happen. On day 5 we were informed of the swap for day 7. No stops would be missed and the transfer would be seamless.

Other than having to pack again and spend three hours on the bus one day the crew did not miss a beat. Viking even made arrangements for all of us to eat lunch for free at a restaurant. No small feat for 190 people. Our program director Sasha, and concierge, Attila made the transfer with us to the Viking Ingvi.

So we would not miss any tours a bus trip the next day was involved. Viking went above and beyond and offered another excursion that did not involve a lengthy bus ride.

I can not say enough about how Viking handled the situation. They did not have to switch ships nor make any of the extra excursions or arrangements.

Low water situations happen and the cruise lines are not responsible.

Viking clearly wants to make their customers happy and I did not hear one complaint.

Viking did right by the passengers on the Alsvin and I would not hesitate to travel with them again.

    Denise
