  1. Wish I knew how to knit :( The A&C they had on the Emerald was making greeting cards with scrapbook supplies. Sad to see the ceramics go. On TAs that's the perfect time to do them - plenty of sea days to complete and put in kiln.

Another question about the Royal: The Enclave - who used it? How much was it? How long can you stay in there? What can you use / have access to?

Thank you for all your help! :D

I am hoping someone who has used the enclave and knows the answers will let you know. I never used it or inquired about the cost.

  2. Hello. Did you happen to notice if there were any arts & crafts during the sea days? The TA we did on the Emerald in 2012 did. Was wondering if the Royal & Regal will. We will be on the westbound TA on the Regal in Oct 2014.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments about the video.

Regarding arts and crafts, I agree with Frank, I don't recall any organized classes. But on a ship that large you can miss some things. I roamed around a lot and I didn't see any. I did see a lot of people knitting, crocheting, etc. I am surprised how many people do that.

  3. Hi Carib

Thanks for sharing such a great compilation.

I'm looking forward to my turn on the Royal in June2014, and seeing something like this in advance gives me a better perspective on what I want to do.

    First stop: International Café !

    Many thanks.

It's 2014 Steven. In less than 6 months you will be on the Royal. I know it's hard waiting, but it comes. I am sure you will have a great time on the Royal.

The International Café is a dangerous place. :)

  4. I'm going to go back and review the video. I watched it after it was first posted, but now that we live close to each other, I will look for you. I don't remember, were you in it? Can you repost the link so we don't have to go back several pages? If not, I'll do it.

I missed the Royal Princess leave yesterday but did see a picture of her leaving the port posted by someone. Here we go, again. lol

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!! Lynne

Lynne if I have to make a quick diagnosis, I will have to say you are addicted to cruising. :) What better addiction? Right? And that will be the pot calling the kettle black.

When you look at the video again you will see both Lenora (Leni) and me in it. You have a great Christmas.

    Here is the link again.

  5. I guess you do love the camera but the camera also loves you. This was excellent, do you do this for a living? There is no way my pictures ever come even close to what these look like and never will. Truly enjoyed it and really want to go on the Royal after seeing this and reading the other Dave's review.

    Thanks to both of you

I think I would have enjoyed a career in photography. My work is in no way related, although I find a lot of Dentists enjoy photography.

Thanks for the compliment. Dave has really done a 'bang up' job with his review and photographs.

  6. I think the retrofits are an expansion of the promenade deck and the addition of a third pool. You might say not substantial and others might say significant or substantial. The water show, Seawalk, and Princess Live all seem to have net mixed reviews. I don't know what makes a great ship, but innovations should meet a positive reception. For it's next class, maybe Princess steps up its game. Not saying is not a nice ship, just not great.
The sum of it's parts is greater than than the whole even with a few short comings. I usually book an aft cabin to enjoy the aft pool on other Princess ships. But on the Royal I used the retreat pool, and the atmosphere there was very peaceful. I really enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the huge horizon terrace. It was my place to hang out.

There are probably degrees of greatness. I don't think there is a way to measure it, so each interprets it his own way.

I certainly remember the plans for the dueling pianos, but didn't know that they didn't finish the central staircase to save $3 million. If these decisions were from the top at Carnival, then Carnivalization crept in to prevent a great ship from being built. The mediocre reviews led to great discounts for our Baltic cruise next summer on the Royal. I suppose that it's closer to a Carnival pricing than Princess pricing.

I wouldn't complain when a Baltic cruise turns out to be a bargain on a 'great' ship. There is so much to enjoy and a big discount is just icing on the cake.

  7. Dave, even though this is only part one, I am seeing so much that I didn't see before. Your close ups show intimate detail and that you miss just walking by. You didn't miss anything.

I have no idea when I will be on the Royal again or the Regal for that matter, but I know I will have some things to check out when I do.

    Thanks for the great job.

  8. Thanks for posting this video. We are three weeks away from our Royal cruise and this brought a huge smile to my face. I am so excited now.:D
You are going to enjoy sailing on the Royal. I envy you having the joy of anticipation.

It's a 'gimmick' if you've already perceived it as such. I thought it was kind of neat, albeit looking down was sort of scary, at least to me. Being able to look forward and aft from this extended, enclosed amid ship Deck 16 location with no visual obstruction was also very cool, especially when at sea. And walking through after sunset, when the SeaWalk was illuminated, watching and listening as the ocean rushed past the hull directly below you, with you standing out on the 'edge', was pretty amazing.

The extended walkway decks above the SeaWalk and Seaview Bar provided some decent views looking forward past the bridge wing which were pretty cool too (yes, the Grand-class has Skywalkers with it's amazing views as well).

These areas on Royal Princess, both inside and topside, were also a very popular gathering spot at sail away, port arrivals, sunrises, and sunsets.

Dave, all excellent points. I liked the forward view from that vintage point. These were all excellent shots. We do have this in common. We both love a camera. :)

  9. Would be interested in comparisons with the upcoming P&O version of the Royal Princess called Brttannia.

I thought Britannia looked uninspiring in terms of unique selling points but the design looks very modern. Note, the overhanging walkway has gone from the British version.

The Brittania looks like a beautiful ship in many ways similar to the Royal and Regal, but missing the seawalk.

The Brittania seems a little more mild mannered in interior design and decorating schemes.

You can't go wrong with either. Lucky Brits. They have all the good deals on Britannia.

  10. Thanks David....hope you and Leni have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! I'll be celebrating my birthday on Christmas ;)

Thanks Marcia. What a great way to celebrate your birthday! I didn't know you were a Christmas birthday. Hope you and David have a great time.

Good Morning from Ft Lauderdale where it's warm and still dark. Wheelie almost packed and then we'll run up to HC and grab some breakfast.

Thank you all for cruising along with us; amazing that a little 7 day caribbean cruise can get over 10,000 hits.

See you all tomorrow on the Ruby, where hopefully the internet speed remains the same.

    Bye

See you on the Ruby. Hope you and Mike have a wonderful Christmas.

  11. WOW! What a great video!!! If you can believe it, it made me realize just how much I didn't do and see while I was aboard, and your pictures are truly wonderful. I'm sure I must have passed by your photograph every day. Was it on Caribe Deck?

I really need to get back to Royal Princess, but will have to settle for Regal Princess for my next B2B (or B2B2B ;)).

THANKS for delightful trip back to a really great ship! :D :D :D

Dave, thanks for that glowing appraisal. But, in no way shape or form did you miss anything on the Royal. You knew the ship inside out and you pointed out every feature of it in your daily bulletins not to mention the gastronomical delights you tortured us with. If you go back to the Royal it should be to just kick back and relax and answer not a darn question from anyone.

Yes the picture you saw in the Video was on Caribe deck. I was so proud to see my photographs displayed in the hallways.

Have a wonderful Christmas in the Winter Wonderland of West Virginia.

I have some friends who sold their place here in Central Florida and moved to West Virginia. Can you believe that? (jut kidding) WV is a beautiful place.

  12. It really was a great cruise with great friends and family. Made my donation to Princess as I'm sure many others have also.

We go home tomorrow morning but will be back Sunday morning to get on the Ruby! :D

Hi Lynda and David, good to hear from you. Someday we will all sail together again.

What am I going to do with 150 minutes each for 4 days

Tme for bed, we have to get up really early.

Enjoy your last night on the Crown and have a fun cruise on the Ruby next week. Merry Christmas at sea.

  13. You were so unselfish to do so much for the benefit of others. But I am sure you can see that it was very much appreciated.

Princess also benefited from your eloquent narrative and daily pictures. So many on the fence have been persuaded in favor of the Royal.

The big job now is to sort through all your pictures from your other camera. I can't wait to see them.

Please take some time for yourself and enjoy the holidays.

  14. Bet if you go to almost any hotel, even 2-star hotels, you'll get individual bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotion... not a container on the wall.

I was a little puzzled by the bottles of shampoo and body wash bolted to the wall. Why did they do it?

Was it because people stuffed the little tubes in their luggage and the cabin attendants had to replace them daily?

Was it for convenience? Maybe. Who knows. Just an odd thing.

  15. Hi,

We'll all have to meet somewhere! Our grandson works at the orange juice plant in Lake Wales! "Florida's Natural"? My step-daughter used to live on Central just on the other side of the railroad tracks several years ago.

Trevor keeps track of the cruises and saw that deal, too. Right now we are paying off this cruise and accompanying expenses. We are both retired now so usually take one cruise a year or year and a half. However, with that said, I never say never. I would go much more often if we could.

We need to start looking at different destinations, as we've done the islands-and usually only have left out Ft. Lauderdale. New England/Canada is appealing because of friends in the NE and I'm originally from Canada and have relatives in Nova Scotia, Montreal and other areas. My son lives in NJ and works at 30 Rock so we could leave out of NYC. after driving up there for a visit. We have a 5 1/2 year grandson there to see, too.

I'll look forward to any further reviews you have of your current cruise and those to come.

    Lynne

my email is babsonparkhill at gmail dot com. When the holiday rush is over we have to get together.

A cruise from NY to Quebec or in the reverse will be fun. I haven't done it, but we were in Quebec City and Montreal last year and really loved those cities. The NY/Canada cruise is very popular in the fall because of the fall colors. We missed the colors by a couple of weeks when we were there.

  16. Dave, loved your video. It brings back wonderful memories of the gorgeous Royal Princess and the wonderful people we met during our 18 day adventure. It was great cruising with you and Leni. Hope our paths cross again on a future cruise.

    Jan and Denny

Jan and Denny, It was nice meeting you both. We will always remember Venice. It's a small world, I am sure we will meet again.

    JPEvans,

We pass that area fairly frequently, as our granddaughter lives in Winter Haven. My step-daughter got her degree from Warner College. I was just up that way in WH last week for GD's baby shower. I will be having lunch with a college friend from Iowa in WH on Thursday. I'm always aware of the Babson Park sign as we go by. :)

It would be nice to have a cruising buddy this close by. We do have cruising friends in the Orlando area, but the group plans get-togethers a bit too far away for us.

Dave, as said, I've enjoyed reading your posts and comments, so don't feel neglected. It's been fun to travel along on the voyage and learn things from your perspective.

    Lynne

Looks like we have the same stomping grounds. Warner is about 4 miles from us. I work in Lake Wales, so you drive right past me on your way to WH.

Where are you cruising to next?

I took up Princess on their 100% cruise credit offer. Next month we are doing a quick 4 day cruise to Cozumel. You couldn't refuse a deal like that.

  17. I just got off the Royal Princess this morning. I wasn't prepared for how

Nice the ship was. It was so elegant. On the ship the lines were pretty

Much non existence. The service was wonderful. Food was excellent.

I was very impressed with the breakfast buffet. They had lots of stuff I

Never knew you could eat for breakfast. All my dinners in the dining

Room were excellent. None of the issues "the haters" talked about

Made any difference in my cruise. Can't wait to sail the Royal Princess

    Again in the future.

So glad you enjoyed your cruise on the Royal. She is quite an impressive ship.

It was bittersweet to see her return to port early this morning because it spells the end of the cruise for all of us.

Button up your overcoat. It's a real reality check for you northerners with lots of snow and chilly temps. I wish you all a warm winter!!

Take care. We'll be looking forward to further reviews from you and others traveling with DMWNC1959 and this Dave. That will let us hang on a little longer. :)

    Lynne

Lynne, we are practically neighbors. I am just north of you in Babson Park. We should get together one of these days.
