  1. Sorry, but a work "emergency" is most probably not the kind of emergency that will allow a waiver of the PVSA requirements. When the law speaks of emergencies, it is likely referring to medical emergencies that require immediate shoreside attention, or other family-type emergencies (such as a death in the family). These are objective emergencies that, in anyone's book, require the passenger to depart the ship. The possibility of being fired if one does not return to work is unlikely to sway the authorities.

Emergencies, by definition, are rarely known in advance.

  2. Ooooh, so that's why limes have gone from 10 for $1.00 to 69 cents each at my local fruit and veggie stand! Interesting to know if the shortage is real or planned to manage the price.

It's a combination of crop damage in the south and growers trying to keep price up. See my earlier post on page one.

  3. Article here, in Orange County Register (CA) about lime prices last week. Restaurants paying $100 a case for what was $14 three weeks ago. One place is asking customers to trade a bag of limes for a 25-cent margarita.

Mexico had a lot of crop damage in the south cutting supply and citrus growers in Apatzingan Valley have banned together to limit supply to guarantee a minimum price of 23 pesos per kilo, or 80 cents per pound.

Maybe Celebrity can't get them or don't want to pay the prices. Maybe they'll institute a lime surcharge like they don in the past on fuel.

I'm buying a lime tree tomorrow.

  4. Thanks. Any way to find out who/what are on the various ships? Celebrity has listed them on the website in the past. I think they called it 'Enrichment Series'. Can't find that on the site now.

  5. Thanks all.

Last we cruised the beverage package wasn't available. I forgot about the bottled water. That might be what puts it into good value. I estimated that we were a bit below break even, but I hadn't calculated the water. My wife does prefer (require) Grey Goose in her martinis so it sounds like a winner for us.

    Thanks again.

  6. While on Mercury last month I had a conversation with the Captain who was previously on Infinity about the pod problems. He said they have finally solved the problems with the pods. I know we haven't heard of any problems recently so perhaps it's true that they have found a solution.

I would take that with a grain of salt...we were on the Summit transatlantic. On the bridge tour, the officer at the helm was asked about the upcoming drydock. He said that the auxillery diesel engines that were to be added would allow the ship to go faster.

  7. In a nutshell (to save reading that entire other thread) the last Summit pod issue was a Pod failure and dry dock May 20, 2006.

We are watching this carefully as we are sailing on the Summit soon and were on board for a Millennium pod issue cruise last November.

As far as how often: no way to predict, except that the Summit has a history of about every fifteen months or so.

When they breakdown: I have no direct information of a complete breakdown...someone jump in here...in our case it was a partial. The ship must travel at a reduced speed. There was a missed port (a $300 cabin credit for the loss) a shortened stay at another port and an extra day crossing the Atlantic (due to the reduction of speed). The cruise following ours was cancelled for a drydock for repairs.

    Regards

  8. The Millennium limped along for at least two cruises, a Med and a Transatlantic, last November before going into dry dock December 10.

As far as the Summit: After finishing Alaska, it's doing several San Diego/Hawaii round trips. Even though I have done that itinerary on The Infinity, I never really paid attention if full or near full speed is required for the crossing. If it can make the crossing at a reduced speed, if needed they could probably limp along to finish those since they have one less port than they had last year.

    Regards
